Alaska

Here39s just six photo highlights of Alaska. Anchorage was a great base of operations for weekend adventures. The closest city to Alaska as they say. I don39t think I could live there but it was an incredible summer for hiking. To over winter you39d have to love snow sports. The snow or termination dust as they call it had nearly descended all the way down from the front range to the

Swimming with whales

I39ve been incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to spend so much time with the whales. In the midst of the research with the competitive groups you39re so engrossed in identifying photographing and data recording that you39re oblivious to the awe of the scene until you hear the oohing and awing from the whale watching boats that have to keep back 100yards. After we had a the bulk o

First adventures on Maui

Maui is an incredibly diverse island biologically culturally and geographically. Being cut off from the mainland there are loads of species endemic to Hawaii. Located in the middle of the Pacific Hawaii seems to be equal parts polynesian chinese australian and mexican. There are also a huge amount of tourists and surfers from the mainland US.I spent the first two weeks here looking for an

North Cascades San Juans and Olympics

Michelle and I took a week off and explored North Cascades National Park the San Juan Islands in the Puget Sound and Olympic National Park. Thanks to a cold spring we hit the snowline just beyond the trailhead of each of our six dayhikes. Luckily we had waterproof boots and never lost the trail for more than 20 minutes at a time. As dayhikers trespassing on the territory of mountaineers we had

Northwest

Driving through on the interstate Spokane appears to be a sprawling mess of begrimed grain elevators. Anyone who has briefly visited will snidely say Well it's certainly no Seattle. Its true that much of Spokane isnt pretty but there are some nice areas and its big enough that after four months I am still discovering hidden gems.Spokane offers all the amenities of big city but retai

I'm nearly in Spokane now feeling exhausted physically but ecstatic from all the incredible scenery. There should be 33 photos in all not just those on the first screen. I hope you all are doing well. Take careBryan

On Golden Bay

From the West Coast I headed up to the north coast to pick blueberries. They hung like grapes on the high bushes. Blueberries with every meal. In cereal with honey or as dessert. My favorite was grabbing a big handful for a break while in the field. We picked in the morning then sorted and packed in the afternoon to be sent off to farmers markets every other day. Upper Moutere was a picturesque

West Coast

Luckily the tsunami turned out to be little more than a high tide. We were a little worried as we watched the news report in a house sitting 4 meters above sea level. I am also lucky to have left Chile a month ago as I see images of places that I've been now destroyed. I actually felt an earthquake when I was camping a few weeks ago in Te Anau. Half asleep I first thought that people had hold of

Neuva Zelanda

After an epic three days of travelling mostly next to wailing babies I arrived in Curio Bay New Zealand. The flight to Australia was the highlight because every seat has its own screen with 100s of movies shows and music to choose from. I think I got in 3 movies and and a couple of seasons of tv shows. I was so lucky to choose such a interesting place I was stationed on a narrow point betwe

Happy 2010 everybody I hope you all enjoyed the holidays Its been a while since writing because Ive been on the go since leaving Estancia Valle Chacabuco. Just to jog your memory an estancia is an enormous cattle or sheep ranch this one was bought by a conservation group and will link two existing national parks to become Patagonia National Park in about 10 years. Many mountain ranges are

I hope everone had a great Thanksgiving Im finally down in Patagonia and having a blast. From Puerto Montt I headed south to Hornopiren intending to check out some thermal baths in tidal pools on an island just off shore then catch a ferry to Chaiten. But the ferry to the island was only running twice a week and once there you had to stay at the expensive hotel. Also the ferry to Chaiten onl

Thanks for all the messages from last time Im now writing from a hostal in Puerto Montt. Im exhausted from hiking so i apologize for any typos.Back to where i left off last time On the weekend all the wwoofers went over Las Cascadas which was nice because it was off the beaten tourist track this is the kind of reward wwoofers get from the local knowledge of their farm. It was spectacular. abou

First week

The good thing about South American airlines was that there was free beer on the plane. However they lost my luggage. I did get it back but only after 4 days of miscommunication and frustration. It is quite amazing how much Americans stick out down here. Aside from our nonolive skin color we all look ready for an Everest expedition. On the plane we would sort of nod to each other and when going
