so these are going to be short and sweet. this traveling pace has left me with little time to update this thing and i'll be at sea for forever with no time to update it before i get home. vietnam was bomb. i loved it there. i've never seen so many cute kids in my life. it was halloween while i was there and suprisingly enough they had decorations and costume shops galore. the first few days were pretty low key just shopping and eating which seems to be what i spend most of my time doing in port. i also [View Full Entry]

so there wasn't anything overly exciting about Malaysia but it was a great transition from India. Not busy, clean and pretty relaxing. The first day went to a fruit market for my ethnobotany class, it was raining most of the day since it was monsoon season but I got to try some yummy fruits and others tried some super hot peppers. I also did a homestay which are always awkward but worth it. The only thing I disliked about it was that it was too structured. It was through a tour agency and it is a form of income for the [View Full Entry]

Sorry Kids No Pictures Until I find an internet café. Warning: This one is LONG…….but good. You’re a true friend if you read it all. October 14th-October 18th 2008 Day 1: Wake up…look outside…no land? Go back to sleep, wake up… look outside…no land? Go back to sleep…wake up…smell something funny…look outside…yep, we’re in India. I’m not sure what kind of smell I was expecting but even in our cabins we could smell the polluted air from outside. No worries though. I’m already used t [View Full Entry]

Bread not Bombs

Only two days between Namibia and South Africa. I had such a great time in Namibia, South Africa had a lot of work to do. We arrive in every port early in the morning so one of the weirdest things I’ve experienced so far in every port is going to bed and looking outside and you are in the middle of the ocean and waking up in the morning with foreign scenery outside your window. It gets me every time. Here is a brief historical overview of Cape Town and South Africa for that matter. I AM learning on this trip, [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Walvis Bay (Valfish Bay) Namibia on Friday the 29th. This is the first time SAS has been to Namibia so no on really knew what to expect but I can honestly say I completely fell in love with the country. SAS knows how to take over cities especially the ones that don’t expect it. It seemed that no on knew we were coming. For a country of only 1.4 million people, 1000 Americans was a pretty big deal. On the first and part of the second day I just hung out in Walvis Bay and found out there [View Full Entry]

So forgive me if I’m repeating myself but I don’t have free internet access so I can’t reread what I’ve written in other blogs. Time is going by so fast. We are going to be in Namibia before we know it. In thinking about it I really don’t feel like what I wrote about Salvador justified what I experienced while I was there. Having classes this week has also brought everything pretty close to home and I am seeing how this experience can be eye-opening and life changing. I have always realized my privileges as an American but never truly appreciated [View Full Entry]

We finally arrived in Salvador!!! I felt like I was on the ship for my entire life and was definitely ready to see land and experience Brazil. The past few days on the boat have been filled with the same ole including classes, napping, eating, reading, and more eating and sleeping. We had a day off of school on Friday for Neptune Day because we crossed the equator Thursday night. We celebrate Neptune Day as a way to give to the gods for safe travels as you cross the equator. I got “fish guts” poured on me and kissed a fish [View Full Entry]

August 30, 2008 So this is my second day on the ship. Yesterday I arrived in port to board the ship around noon. It didn’t take as long as I thought but it was so hot and humid everyone was sweaty and smelly and then it started to rain. I met my roommate Angela from Seattle who seems to be a very sweet girl. Her and he boyfriend are doing the Semester at Sea thing together and have been dating for 5 years and they are 20 years old. Sounds quite familiar. We had a lifeboat drill to prepare us for [View Full Entry]

Greetings from the Bahamas! Just wanted to send an email letting you know what’s been going on the past few days since I’ve left the states. Currently just sitting on my laptop outside on my balcony feet away from the palm trees and beaches. I got into the Bahamas around 12:30 on Wednesday. It was hot hot hot, 94 degrees and all humid. The locals here are some of the nicest people I have ever met. They are more than willing to sit and chat or to answer a question. But who can really complain living in a place like this. chris and i went on a little motorcycle adventure this weekend. hopped on the bike and went to shanendoah national park. the ride was beautiful and the appalachians are gorgeous. we rode the bike through the park and stopped to hike along the river to see the water fall. during the ride i noticed a lot more as the passenger on the bike. got a thumbs up from a trucker next to us and a bus load of people that were drunk on their way tubing kept waving to us. all the bikers in the park kept commenting on chris' bike.
