Wonder Miss

I'm Bryony and I am a teacher jacking it all in to find and enjoy my 'oyster'. I have wanted to travel for as long as I can remember and am so excited to be finally doing it...cultures, adventures, journeys, people, places, food, learning, living....I can't wait to sample it all. So I'm leaving my lovely family and saying goodbye to the familiar. I have a feeling that I am going to love this travelling malarkey, I just hope I leave my 'Calamity Jane' at home! South East Asia, New Zealand and Australia - here I come...

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok February 19th 2014

After a visa run from Koh phangnan to Kuala Lumpur where I randomly met a yogi several times in the streets of China town (who gave me a few new mantras to chant if I so wished!), it was off to Bangkok. I am now writing this in retrospect after all the political protests and violence erupted and has been the result of a few deaths. Whilst I was in the heart of Bangkok, I decided to venture to the infamous 'koh San Road' during one of these early and then, celebratory protests, I now see how that could have been a decision full of folly. I later learned these kind of protests can turn at any moment from celebratory romp where locals take advantage of the heady atmosphere to sell their wares and make a ... read more

Okay. So I now know why the the monk in Phuket winked at me...the cheeky twinkle in his eye knew what was coming my way and the laugh he gave me then was knowledge. There I wrote on a tile that would be used in the construction of'The Big Buddha' on the hill in Phuket. Having already taken 10 years to build they are still going...after a rip off journey up there on a bumpy tuk Tuk it was all worth it for the view, the Buddha and my blessing from this monk. I thanked Thailand on that marble slate and asked for forgiveness, love and acceptance And it was all in that wink, I just had to awaken it myself. The last laugh will always be mine and yours if you dip into the now ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Lanta November 4th 2013

Goodbye Phi Phi, hello Lanta! After a bumpy ride in one of the taxi vans that crams in tourists to the vaious destinations from the ferries, I arrive at Sanctuary No1. A quick enquiry and tail end of low season means they have a bungalow with a sea view just for me for 500 Baht (roughly 10 quid). I later discover I can get a room for 200/300 but I'm glad I treated myself to this as it really was lovely to lie in my hammock watching the waves breaking gently on the rocks and falling asleep to the sounds of the waves. Sometimes I felt as if I was on a boat, the waves were so loud! So. up the sandy path to my quiet idyll, 10 second hop, skip and a jump and i'm ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don November 3rd 2013

I was mistaken - grossly it seems. I thought I had arrive in paradise when I reached Phi Phi - surrounded by more jagged karsts, fine white sand, colourful boats lined the bay - paradise no? No. I had met Ollie, a German guy on the boat over and we ended up bonding over a love of animals and laughing over language difficulties. He had a girlfriend and I had my instincts so we ended up sharing a room for the night. Only 200 Baht each and we went to bed with the sound of vomiting next door thrown in for free - oh yeah. We both had similar desires - to find our own slice of paradise and both of us, it turns out didn't want to find it at the bottom of a 'bucket' ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Phang-Nga November 3rd 2013

The sun was blazing as colour coded groups scrambled aboard different vessels (I was in green - a good sign I thought) and I had a little thought about how I felt like I was on a school trip and then relief came when I realised I was only responsible for myself! All aboard!! There began gentle journey through sparkling blue waters towards hazy mounds in the distance. Our destination? Phang Nga islands.... Phang Nga Islands are one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern Thailand and for good reason. Also known as 'James Bond Island' where 'The Man with the Golden Gun' was filmed; for me, it was one of the most stunning and best days of my life (well my eyeballs thought so anyway!). I know I will have many of these amazing ... read more

Where do I start?? Phuket and the Chinese vegetarian festival has been a great way to start my travels in Thailand, literally with a bang!! I've been to visit the 'Big Buddha' and Wat Pro temple in southern Phuket on a day trip and got fleeced by the 'taxi' man (it was my first day and getting used to the Thai money - Baht. I have also been on an amazing trip to Pnang Nga Beach where they filmed James Bond 'The man with the golden gun' which was just stunning.....and the rest of the time I have been joining the festivities and relaxing in my very homely hostel run my PiTi and his wife Tanya who are the loveliest hosts and have made me feel so at home. So. The Chinese festival is CRAZY! Good ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Wilayah Persekutuan » Kuala Lumpur October 8th 2013

So Neina is heading to Frasers Hill on a school trip, where the air is cooler and apparently vipers just casually cross your path and health and safety is less than paramount on a 'dicing with death' type jungle trek with kids, in the pitch black. Let's get with the Malay way...? So Neina's flatmate Anne takes me down to the nearest 'Starbucks' (of which there are a depressing amount) and I book myself my first hostel experience. I do the backpacker thing and walk til I find my hostel, set up camp in the female dorm and will myself to stay awake...I choose action instead of sleep and book myself on that evenings pub crawl (it is Saturday night) and here begineth name tags, booze, drinking games, very dodgy music and some nice people.... I ... read more

After a teary goodbye and a 4 hour delay I finally boarded Malaysian Airlines for the longest flight of my life and the adventure of a lifetime! Was I unsure? Yes! Was I scared? Er. Yes! Did I contemplate turning around? No way! Intrepid not yet, trepidatious, definitely - but I'm sure that will turn around! Lucky for me I was sat next to someone relatively normal even if she was hell bent on having a few. That's fine; she had booze, I had diazepam...nighty night. Before we respectively dozed off I was aware of how much of a novice long haul flyer I appeared... surprise at the in flight entertainment, blanket, meals and drinks....this was no sleazy jet flight no no! Service with a smile continued upon landing in Kuala Lumpur airport and everything seemed modern, ... read more
