January 5, 2005, Wednesday. We left Pittsburgh and started our trek south. The most significant weather factor was rain, rain, and more rain. Our first stop was Pipestem Resort State Park in West Virginia. We were the only campers. January 6, 2005, Thursday. After scouting the park, it was decided that Pipestem had good reason to be called a resort. The facilities included horseback riding, golf course, tennis, two lodges, and even a cable car to bring folks down the canyon to the second lodge. A stop at the nature-center, sent us the County Line Trail for a hike out to [View Full Entry]

This is the last entry on our trip in the southwest HIGHPOINTING One of the things we are trying to do as we travel, is climb the highest point in every state. On our way west, in Kansas, we got to Mt Sunflower(4,039) . In Colorado, we tried to climb Mt. Elbert, (14,433) but did not make it all the way, we did about 12,000 feet. Picture are located in OUR GALLEY “It is the journey, not the destination.” In New Mexico we drove to Mt. Wheeler (13,161), the highpoint, but due to lots of snow we viewed it from afar. November 4, Thursday. Drove across Illinois and Indiana, We stopped in Richmond, Indiana, where we visited one of the second largest RV center for sales, in the country and talked to them about the Bothan. They were interested, but they wanted to trade us for a newer or bigger model. We continued to the high point right outside of Indiana in Richmond. It was on private property; it was sort of interesting in that there was no marker, just a couple road signs saying it was the high point of Indiana. We found a campground nearby and spent the night. We walked to the train station attempting to get a tour trip, but alas it is too late in the season. So we continued down to the Mighty Mississippi and the great arch. We went to the I-max and saw the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Great film. We boarded the tiny cubicle that would take us up to the top of the arch. Quite a view! We solved the mystery of the trains, and headed to the museum area. On our way back we stopped at Union Center and went to a couple breweries. [View Full Entry]

Bartlesville, OK We stopped at Monte Casino School in Tulsa. Gail’s new library is beautiful - neat sculptures, a huge collection; it’s not quite finished yet. We headed off to Bartlesville to see Bob’s friend Stephanie and also the Frank Lloyd Wright High Rise. We got here a bit early and visited a soap shop and a candle shop. In the morning we did go to the High Rise, but it was Monday, and it was closed; but we happened to run into the chef at the restaurant. He was kind enough to take us on a little tour of the [View Full Entry]

October 29, Friday Tulsa, Oklahoma Oklahoma - we biked the Katy Trail, 32 miles, as we biked along Riverside Drive, which is paved and an easy ride, we realized we were not going into Tulsa. At any rate we had lunch and then returned to Keystone State Park campground, had dinner, and that was it for the day. October 30, Saturday Tulsa, Oklahoma We’re off to Tulsa to Gail’s house. It was a good visit with Gail; her new home is lovely and she was so excited. We had some lunch with Gail’s friends at her new place and off to [View Full Entry]

October 27, Wednesday Capulin Volcano, NM Drove a “Bob road” - all day. The first stop was Capulin Volcano; we hiked the rim and all the way down into the volcano. Wonderful scenery. Stopped for lunch at the country store, and then on to Oklahoma. We made the high point in Oklahoma, which is the Black Mesa, named for the volcanoes found there. It was a 4.6-mile hike each way; that wasn’t the challenge, the challenge was we were losing daylight. We arrived just before 3 p.m., so we put a wiggle on and started out. The climb is under 1,000 [View Full Entry]
