October 18, 2006, Wednesday. We left Napa and arrived at Sausalito. The Chamber of Commerce was helpful, the visitor’s center was useless, but the bike store was very helpful getting us started. This is truly a biker’s heaven. We biked out of Sausalito and up, up toward the Golden Gate Bridge. There is a bike lane but the road is heavily trafficked. So, in a low gear, we just pumped slowly uphill keeping right on a very winding road with lots of other bikers, but more cars and trucks. The day was crystal clear and warm so the views as [View Full Entry]

Calistoga to Petaluma to Napa Sunday 10/15 is an organization day. Just biked to Mass, had breakfast at “Sarafonia”, biked around town and to the Laundromat. The convenience of being home and doing laundry is a luxury, but on-the-road it is a pain in the butt. Monday, 10/16, We drove to Petaluma to have the Bothan repaired at a five star Chrysler/Dodge dealer where our turbo-resonator was efficiently and rapidly replaced. We both wonder why this isn’t a recall item since so many people with this Mercedes Benz diesel engine have had the same problem. The warr [View Full Entry]

Does that make you thirsty, how about a glass of wine?

n Damme SP to Bodega Bay to Calistoga Friday the 13th, 2006. One of the regions’s few towns is Port Arena. We climbed 147 steps to a view of sea and coastline which is treacherous. This lighthouse and the area around was obliterated by the 1906 earthquake. As we drive the coastal highway # 1 with it’s hairpin turns, and steep drops into the Pacific, I am not going to think about “Friday the 13th”. The coastal vistas are magnificent. The weather today is cloudy and cool, but it adds a different flavor to the coast. Bob is having a grand [View Full Entry]

October 11, 2006, Wednesday. MacKerricher SP is a great campground with a beach, and horse trails. Most days start out cold around 40ish but the temp climb, after the AM fog to the high 60’s, quite pleasant. After breakfast, we biked to the stables and got our instructions for the ride. We rode “Seago” and “Chardonnay” to the Pacific coast, WOW! The seals were sunning themselves, and the ocean was crashing against the surf, as we clomped along the beach. Our horses were docile, until we started back toward the stables, then they got frisky! There are d [View Full Entry]

Bob ready to hit the road, getting on is a lot easier than getting off.

October 9, 2006, Friday. We started the day biking around Eureka, the home of some wonderful old Victorian Mansions, evidence of the wealth of the lumber business years gone-by. The town today seems to be hodgepodge of trendy shops, cafes, old bars, old businesses many closed and lots of homeless souls. Of course, Bob found a brewery, The Lost Coast Brewery, and we had the obligatory sampler. In this area there is a large Mexican population, so the Mexican restaurants are quite good. Down the road we deviated into the Humboldt Redwoods SP, Avenue of the Avenue of the G [View Full Entry]

The Bothan was not going to fit through this Redwood tree, of well Maureen made it

We traveled south on Rt. 101 along the coast with incredible views. Huge boulders are just sprinkled in the ocean accepting the beating of the waves, it was a beautiful scene. After a brief stop at the Visitor’s Center of the Redwood National Park/State Park in Crecent City, CA. We continued driving to Prairie Creek, State Park., where we registered for two days. No amenities, but we don’t need them. We are quite self-sufficient. October 8, 2006. We were up early and our first thing was, to get ready for our hike through the pristine Redwood Forest clear [View Full Entry]

Hardy souls going out to surf the Pacific!
Route # 101 Lovely scenery!
Yes! This is Tsunami territory, with lots of active faults.

Mt. Mazama erupted 7,700 years ago. After expelling ash and pumice this huge mountain collapsed and created a beautiful lake encircled with green forests and steep mountains. We had magnificent views of Wizard Island in Crater Lake with the shadows and clouds moving in. We arrived late in the day with the possibility of snow expected. We took pictures and decided to hi-tail it off the mountain, it was cold. This time of year, campgrounds are closed and the drive out of the National Park is significant plus the trip to another campground was a bit of a hike. So off [View Full Entry]

It was cold at Crater Lake, snow was forecast.
Is that lovely or what? Crater Lake!

Lake Tahoe is shared between NV and CA. A very popular resort in summer and a ski resort in winter. The lake appears crystal clear and beautifully blue. However it is a fact that each year it gets less clear due to the influx of vacationers and developers, this is a sad reflection of our society. Most shops, campgrounds, etc. close at the end of September. We enjoyed not having lots of tourists, as we walked around the lake and little towns. Actually it is “glitzy” and the word “hunky-tonk” comes to mind. It is obviously a very affluent area in [View Full Entry]

We are alive and well! We are sitting in a campground outside Bodega Bay CA. Sorry we did not get out blogs going. But we are having too much fun and seeing too much beauty, please keep tuned and we’ll catch up. We left Pittsburgh on September 26, 2006 and traveled West on Route #80 averaging 500+ miles per day. Our First night was in Illinois, at Illini State Park, we even had time to take a walk along the Illinois River before it got too dark, the state park was great with a full hook-ups. Day two was to [View Full Entry]

Kejimkujik to Annapolis Royal to Port Royal to Digby Neck We took off early morning to hike the Hemlocks and Hardwood Trail. It was a lovely trail with hemlocks at different stages of growth. It seems a fire destroyed lots of this area but they are coming back. We saw hemlocks that were 400 years old!! I couldn’t see the tops. It was a loop trail and the bugs were out and about. This time of year I guess we can expect the buggies. Bob enjoys history and geologic sites. I do too, but in moderation. I think I have [View Full Entry]
