We are Jim and Sue Scott (Baby Boomers) presently doing a shake down trip in our Kedron Topender caravan in preparation for our 6 month trip around Australia. We are travelling with our life long friends the Leckies and the Hartners who have purchased Toyota Landcruisers and 23ft caravans. One Aussie Wide Bunderra nicknamed (Bundy) and a Regal nicknamed (The Royals). Jim and I have lived in Australia now for 30 years we love the Aussie way of life especially the great outdoors and are so looking forward to this great adventure. Jim is taking 6 months long service leave to do this trip. We are leaving from Hollywell on the Gold Coast on the 13th May 2012 and travelling anticlockwise.

Jim Loses his Camera in Broken Hill What a story this is and it’s all true. Believe me! Wayne said that I could not make this up when we told him what had happened today. Here’s how it developed. Yesterday (22nd August) – our only full day in Broken Hill Sue and I decided to do the rounds of the Art Galleries – Yes “us” in Art Galleries is unbelievable for a start, but if you know Broken Hill you will know that this place is famous for it’s artists. Most famous would be “Pro” Hart. Pro passed away a few years ago and a Gallery has been set up in his honour. We went there and were able to take photos of his work and his studio, which was exactly as he left ... read more

Esperance to Streaky Bay South Australia via the Nullarbor We got away from Esperance early morning and headed for Caiguna Roadhouse our first overnight stop. Our morning tea and fuel stop was at Norseman just at the start of the Nullarbor. On our way through these little towns I was noticing some really strange names - one of the first was ”Gibson Soak” the next was” Grass Patch” and the funniest was “Salmon Gums”. Our next fuel stop was some roadhouse that I can’t remember the name of (Jim – Balladonia). We stopped there fuelled up and had some lunch in our vans. Jane had made Alan’s lunch then poured him a pineapple juice. He immediately knocked it over so Jane... read more

Perth to Margaret River We left Perth early and headed for Margaret River. I had booked us into the Big 4 at Cowaramup (or as the locals call it cow town). It was called Taunton farm and was a nice country farm park with cows, horses, goats and a huge pig. Pretty cold over night though. Jim got a local map and set up a tour of the attractions around Margaret River, like chocolate, cheese, silk, wineries and a providore. We bought lots of yummies and finished at Brewery - not great beer here though. Even Wayne had trouble downing the local ale. I think the boys will stick to the good old favourite – XXXX GOLD. Denham and Monkey Mia (Shark Bay) Saturday morning we did the 20k drive over to Monkey Mia. What a beautiful little bay that is. We got there too late for dolphin feeding but we did see them frolicking about in the most amazing clear blue water. Had a coffee in the café then headed back to Denham. I decided to make my mango cheese cake that afternoon. I got the recipe from the Zebra café in Kununurra but I altered mine a little by using Ginger nut biscuits in the base instead of the Nice biscuits that they suggested. The Ginger nut base worked really well - the ginger complimented the mango. I will put the recipe on the blog for all you foodies - it was really nice. We booked ... read more

Mary Pool to Fitzroy Crossing. Well we left Mary Pool early after a very cold night in the bush. Jim and I were ok as we were able to fire up our diesel heater – what a great accessory. The others could hear it going in the morning so there were a few comments made. We had a short drive today arriving at Fitzroy Crossing before lunch. We checked in at the Fitzroy Crossing River Resort and Van Park. It was a fabulous park and had beaut drive thru sites. We were in time to have morning tea so Jim and I and Gaile and Wayne went up and had Devonshire coffees, we also booked into the restaurant for dinner. We gave lunch a miss and around 1-30pm we went to ... read more

WHAT A NIGHT!!!!!!!! THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF “WAYNES WORLD” It started well we had an earlier happy hour than usual, as it gets dark by about 5-15pm, a few drinks and lots of laughs, then about 6 o’clock all hell broke loose. There was a lot of scuffling and all of a sudden there were special forces cops everywhere, guns drawn, pointing them at everyone, and they headed straight for Wayne’s Van - almost pulled his door off it’s hinges, shoving Wayne out of the way and went searching thru the van. Wayne said “What the hells going on”. The cops said they were looking for a murderer who killed someone down south and he was last seen in this area. Wayne said “Well he’s not in here.” The cops shoved ... read more

Kununurra day 4 4th July WOW!!!! that dinner was really nice last night at the Pump House restaurant on Lake Kununurra, the night didn’t go smoothly though, we got to the restaurant and were seated outside but that very evening another “Arctic blast” hit the north and we were ALL freezing so the boys drove back to the vans and got our jackets, we sat there for over an hour and a half waiting for our meal and finally Jim went and asked the Maitre d’ if the chef needed a hand with the dinners, I decided I was just to cold sitting out there it was really unpleasant so I went in side and sat down at the door and noticed and empty table for six, I asked to ... read more

1st July We left the beautiful Lake Argyle around 9-am and arrived in Kununurra about an hour later - too early to check into the caravan park. We were able to register but couldn’t move in until 11-am. The boys checked out our allocated sites and worked out a plan of attack to park the vans in this really nice park. A lot of people had queued up by now and this seems to happen most days especially at this time of year. You really do need to book ahead. We are so glad we have done that, especially in the popular places. We set up in short time - we are getting pretty good at this now and are a lot quicker at packing up and setting up. Kununurra is ... read more

This Blog is being used to upload videos taken so far. A tip - when loading video you should pause the playing of the video until it is fully loaded to get a continuous playback. The first video was taken at Blackall Caravan Park. During the tourist season the camp put on a camp oven roast and entertainment every night. We enjoyed our night. Our Gold Coast friends Duncan and Lizzie (Kiwi's) met us at Roma and travelled to Longreach with us. The second video was at the first free camp we experienced. The road train proved to be a taste of what was to come that night. A lesson - don't stay at free camps close to major highways if you want a good night's sleep. Third Video is an overview of the riverside camp ... read more
