Obatija

 Europe » Croatia » Istria » Opatija
We took off from Plitvice and decided it would be a 'capital' idea to check out the capital, Zagreb. Unfortunately, Zagreb was closed. No one told us. (It was Sunday) We decided to cut our losses and keep on moving on to Rijeka where we were to fly out on Tuesday morning. Rijeka itself is a fairly horrible looking town with lots of high-rise apartment buildings in desperate need of repair. Fortunately a few kilometres away is Obatija which accounts for 1/2 of all Croatia's tourisim and has been a tourist beach side resort town for ages (like 100 years) since [View Full Entry]

How Swiss is Croatia? Ask yourself!
Pag was just a detour on the way to the Plitvice National Park which is far lusher and greener than anything else we had seen so far of Croatia. To get there we are now travelling inland on Croatia's lovely new motorways. i especially like the tunnels, one was 6kms long!! I have taken a video of this so those at home can also enjoy my motorway obsession. You lucky, lucky people!! The National Park is a bunch of lakes at different levels with a lot of waterfalls in between. Quite nice esppecially as you can catch a rubber tyred train [View Full Entry]

Not a kauri to be seen
We were thinking of doing a boat trip around the islands of Zadar as there are some great day trips that stop on the islands and allow you to swim. Unfotunately the weather was a bit dodgy as a cold front, similar to baby fish-mouth, is sweeping up the country. We bugged out and headed to Pag, Pag, Croatia. Pag was described as void of vegetation and a bit of a moonscape, (which is the only bit I heard) Off we went and checked out Pag town when we arrived which is suppossed to be the lace-making capital of Croatia although [View Full Entry]

What a lovely place to bring up a family
We decided to Split, Split and head further up the coast to Zadar. Bing had read in the lonely planet that Zadar is the place to see and a good base for exploring the islands. Unfortunately, they were both wrong..but that's ok. Zadar had an even more menacing entrance than Split, (which is REALLY saying something) We were advised that the place to stay was Borik which we decided to repronounce as Borat, cause it was easier and we are enjoying making fun of the locals. Borik/Borat was by the sea and quite nice although it has only got a pebble [View Full Entry]

Looks nice at night
We caught the car ferry from Hvar to Split. It takes about 2 hours and fortunately for us, as it would have been a waste of 2 hours under normal circumstances, it was incredibly stormy, thunderstorms and lightning!! The ferry is huge though, so mostly not scared.... mostly. Arriving into Split, we really wondered what was going on.. It looks like Eastern Europe after it had a hard night, got mugged, and then was used by a ferral animal as a toilet. Fortunately, Split has a very nice older city part with lovely little streets, the famous Diocelen Roman Palace, some [View Full Entry]

Hvar, Hvar, Croatia.

 Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Hvar
Hvar comma Hvar comma Croatia fullstop We were sad that we had to finally leave Dubrovnik this morning. We travelled up the coast which was strangely not anywhere near as impressive as we had thought. One of the highlights was stopping at the bus station in Polce because we felt toilet. We were greeted by a large lesbian woman in overalls who seemed to have taken on the role of toilet policeman and charged us 2.50 kuna (67c) each for using the toilet. We did however get a souvenir toilet admission pass, perhaps we can use it again and again? We [View Full Entry]

It was a little windy though
If anyone has seen the James Bond movie Casino Royale, you might remember shots of an amazing fiord in Montenegro whilst JB was convalescing after a rather painfull experience with a less than complete chair, and a large blunt object smashing some of his tender parts. Well, not to be outdone, (except for the blunt object smashing part) we decided to check out this place and traveled south of Dubrovnik to Kotor on the bay of Kotor. Whilst driving around we have passed through numerous checkpoints as we travel in and out of Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina & Croatia. interestingly [View Full Entry]

Early morning view from our room. 5:30 (Im still on funny time)
We got up early and booked a Walls & Wars tour of the city which involved a 2km walk around the top of the Dubrovnik Walls. Great views, really super stuff. Our guide Michael was a young Croatian Goth type dude who kept saying 'Is it OK?' at the end of every explanation. Oh, our apartment has great views here too, everything does, you really cant go wrong.. except for the 200 steps to our apartment from the street. Legs of pure rubber!!! [View Full Entry]

Arrival
Up with the squirrels and off to Gatwick! A maze of tubes and trains masterfully conquered by our intrepid travellers and then off over France and Austria, down the Adriatic coast for a touchdown at Dubrovnik. Initial concerns at the lack of a map, and the total lack of assistance by the Sixt rental outlet to even show us where our car was hiding (eventually we caught it after taking our trundell bags down the main highway) led to total disaster, mayhem and trauma, (on my part) trying to come to grips with a manual transmission in a right-hand drive Skoda [View Full Entry]

The troops
Whew, a busy day around London. Next stop, Madame Tussauds. Mostly we just acted like fools around the wax figures to the amusement of the other tourists and the distaste of the staff. We also visited the Queen at Buckingham Palace and Gordon Brown at Downing Street. Next, we shopped till we dropped on Oxford Street and checked out Picadilly Circus. Exciting. Thanks to Jo, Steve & Jase for a memorable day, one of the best of our trip so far. [View Full Entry]
