The Wetsundays Ennui Ah, dear reader so much has happened since last we spoke! We had two days in Airlie to relax after the Noosa trip, Fraser Island and several hellish bus journeys. We had a couple of drinks our second night just down at the hostel bar and I got chatting to an actual Aussie, called Bruce! After various obvious references to a girlfriend called Sheila and general drunk banter he offered to take us out to a place called Conway Falls which is only 20 minutes away and backpackers rarely go. We took him up kindly on his offer, [View Full Entry]

Our time in Brisbane was spent mainly trotting around town trying to find the library after some questionable map-reading skills on my part, and then getting out of the rain. On Sunday (3rd Feb) Lynn gave us a ride down to Hamilton so we could catch the Citycat which is a ferry that is used as public transport for getting into the city, pretty nifty. It took about half an hour which would have been relaxing had the ferry not been full of tanked-up Aussies heading to the cricket and slating England for being crap at said sport. Bah. We visited [View Full Entry]

We left Central Sydney Tuesday 22nd January and decided before went to catch our bus to Collaroy to take a leisurely trot through the Hyde Park again so Emma could photograph a tree whose roots resembled genitals which she had spotted a day previously. I was quite happy as I managed to get a good ten minutes reading in. For some rather fortuitous reason I happen to stumble upon books left in hostels which I already wished to read, my good fortune has so far delivered me with a Jodi Picoult novel (turgid and bloated), a James Patterson thriller which I [View Full Entry]

The adventure continues... We left the Oslo Hotel in St Kilda last Thursday (17th Jan) and headed across town to Spencer St Backpackers (475 Spencer St - check it yo, my fave hostel in Melbourne) as it was closer to the airport and we needed to head out there to collect our campervan, which I will come to later on. Spencer St backpackers was fantastic. We were only there for one day but had such a laugh, and chilled out loads. It's safe to say now it was the calm before the proverbial storm. We hung out with Louise; a wonderful [View Full Entry]

Hello hello my eager readers!.... RIGHT! Where was I?... Friday was a pretty chilled out day. I had been having extreme backpack trauma, so we caught a tram into the city and I managed to buy a new one. We swung by the Melbourne Arts Centre and scoped out the Nick Cave exhibit. It was actually pretty interesting for saying I'm not really a fan of his; there were tons of his notebooks, diaries, the usual artist ephemera. After that we had a trot by the River Yarra at the Southbank. It was a welcome change after the blistering heat of [View Full Entry]

SO, to pick up where I left off.... We headed out of Adelaide on Monday 7th, Emma took the first leg thru the hills and down the Princes Highway; which is a pretty much straight shot all the way to Melbourne. We had planned to get to Mount Gambier for our first night's kip of the journey, after passing through tons of little non-descript towns (except Kingston which had a 100ft lobster welcoming you. An obvious choice really!). Gambier was a "one main street" kinda place, and after we trawled in at around 9.30pm trying to find a hostel, my keen [View Full Entry]

Our arrival into Australia was rather clement; the sun was shining, the birds were singing...and the heat of a thousand handdryers imposed itself rather rudely upon us causing me to wither in Adelaide Airport Carpark while trying to light a very cheap duty-free Marlboro Light. Yep, it was 42 degrees our first day in Adelaide, this twinned with jetlag pretty much rendered us useless for the first few days altho did cool down to around 32ish for most of the week. We spent this week with my friends Amber, Paul and their little bebe, Josh (who I've come to name Rogan-figure [View Full Entry]
