Izmir and Efes

When we got on the bus we realized that we had forgotten to stock up on food and water for the journey. We knew we would get water on the bus and a little bit of food but probably not enough to sustain us for the whole trip. After the first time they handed out water and snacks we both tried to get some rest. Around 200 we pulled into a rest station where we could go to the bathroom and buy

Week of 21 April

The Monday we got back from Turkey I was excited to see everyone and to be able to catch up with everyone and go for a drink later that evening. When I went to the office to meet Mikkel and give him his picture DVD from Berk and start to upload pictures Connie informed us that everyone was going to see 10000 BC tonight. It wasnrsquot exactly what I was hoping for and I really didnrsquot ha

Learning About Ataturk

Mikkel and I set our alarm for 10 but when it went off it still felt way too early. We laid in our beds and talked for a little bit before Mikkel decided it was probably time to get up. He got out of bed and went to see where everyone else was. He found them all fast asleep on the couch or floor of the living room. He woke Berk up who then woke up all the others. They were in there talking for a

Visiting Berk in Ankara

Trying to sleep last night was kind of difficult not because of the sleeping surface but because of how sunburnt my arms were We actually had really comfortable cushions to lay our sleeping bags out on so that was no problem but I could not get comfortable with my burns 61516. Inside the sleeping bag my arms felt like they were on fire but outside the sleeping bag they were freezing co

The bus dropped us off in Nev351ehir where we would then need to wait for another shuttle to take us to Greme. While we were waiting for the shuttle of course they had people attacking us with fliers and brochures about the various guided tours we could take around the area. The guy that approached us was really pushing Mikkel hard and I was shocked at how patiently he listened and how g

Day 2 in Istanbul

We woke up this morning and I hopped in the shower first and then woke Mikkel up so he could shower and I could get changed. Onur had left earlier that morning to go to work but said he might be home before we had to leave. We set out for Taksim Square to find the bus company that would give us a ride to Greme later that night. We bought the tickets and were told to meet back at the same of

Around 300 AM we were awoken by a thickmustached Turkish train attendant and told to take our passports and tickets and get off the train so it could be searched. I did what I was told and also changed back into my jeans and got off with Mikkel. The attendant also asked Mikkel if he would please buy him 2 liters of Jack Daniels whiskey at the Duty Free because only tourists were allowed to

Mikkel and I are headed for Turkey After everything that went on last night I called him at 7 to make sure he was up in time to meet me at the train station at 830. He said it was a really good thing I did otherwise he would have slept right through his alarm. He was very somber and groggy when I met him around 20 to 9 so I gave him a hard time about his hangover but then told him Irsquo

Last Minute Plans for Turkey

Last day in Brasov before heading to Turkey It started off like any other in the hospital and I worked with Beth Mary Sarah and Steffi. My favorite baby was on the 4th floor again so I spent as much time with him as I could since he would probably be gone by the time I got home. After my shift I said goodbye to everyone and that I would see them in a week before heading to the office to em

Ok I'm so far behind with this blog that I'm not even going to try to catch up . . . sorry Anyway Dani and I went to Codlea today to meet with the head of an after school day care center for children. Dani had suggested that maybe I could work here a few afternoons a week since prior to Coleen and Erin coming I had seemed so bored after finishing the day at the hospital. We took the b

After working in the hospital all morning I went back to the office to check my mail and then wait for Kayleigh. She sent me a text later to see if I was coming home and if we could go shopping before her big leaving dinner. Apparently there had been a misunderstanding. I went home and we went out to look for something nice she could wear. When we didnrsquot see anything we came back in ti

Today was womanrsquos day in Romania Itrsquos a day sort of like Motherrsquos Day in the US but for all women Kayleigh and I both slept in later than we would have liked so we ate a late breakfast and Kayleigh raced off to meet her drama group at 12. I made plans with Mikkel to hike up Mt. Timpa and got ready to meet him up at the cable car at 1245. Aside from being a little bit win

Today started out like any other day at the hospital although Sharon finally started working with us. She had originally signed up as a journalism volunteer but the project director was really irresponsible and didnrsquot give her much to do so she switched to care and community instead. Anyway one of the kids Luciano was especially fun today because when I opened his crib to let him ou

Today at the hospital I started to change a baby boyrsquos diaper and noticed that he was in the process of pooping. I cleaned that up and then as I was putting a new diaper on him he started peeing Some of it got on me . . . which was awesome so I just cleaned both of us up and threw away the dirty diaper. Anyway just thought Irsquod share that. After work I met Kayleigh to go shop

Foiled Ski Plans and Movie Night

Today I went to work at the hospital until about 1230 and then went to the office to load some more Budapest pictures. Mikkel came in around 1 and we thought that maybe we could go skiing this coming weekend so we investigated the prices of some of the surrounding resorts. It turns out though that just about everywhere is REALLY expensive. AND not only do you have to pay for a lift ticket

We got into Brasov from Budapest on the train today around 600 AM. Apparently I was the only one who got a full nightrsquos sleep Haha I honestly donrsquot know how I do it but Irsquom not complaining. I guess I really can sleep anywhere. Sara and I took a taxi home and Elisabeta was already up when I got in ready to make me breakfast. When I finished eating I went to take a nic

I got up this morning and took another cold shower but was surprised to find that everyone else was also up at the same time AND they were just about ready to go by 900 so I didnrsquot mind waiting until 930 to leave. Sara Alison Leonie El and I all left the hostel and planned on going back over the bridge to see the Palace and other things over by the river. When we walked outside w

This morning was not at all a typical travel day that Irsquom used to. I got up around 7 or so to shower with only cold water but it wasnrsquot until about 830 that other people started to get up. Then we went out to eat the complimentary breakfast and chat with the other travelers. I was expecting to be able to leave very soon after finishing breakfast but no . . .
This weekend Sara Alison Leonie and I packed up and took an overnight train to Budapest It's actually 2 cities for those that don't know Buda and Pest separated by the Danube that have been combined into one. We left Brasov at 730 PM and arrived in Hungary around 530 AM. At the train station we all went to the ATM to get some Hungarian money and my card worked It felt so great t

Soooo for the last week I've had trouble with my ATM card and haven't been able to get money out of my account. Apparently my bank shut down all access to the ATMs in Romania because of lots of fraud that has been happening in Romania. They clearly didn't feel that it was necessary to mention this to me when I was opening my account with them and told them where I was going. Anyway I went al
