My yearly sojourn this year i.e. 2010 was the hills of Kumaon in the Uttarakhand State. I have already traveled to the Gharwal region of the State and this year thought of having peek at the Kumaon region. Now having completed my journey of this sector, I do not have any other option but to agree to the tag line of the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam in their e-brochure which reads as and I quote – “Kumaon – simply heaven”. The tourist map given hereinunder is from the E-uttranchal site and I found to be very convenient during my tour and would like to share with all intending travelers – With all its mesmerizing natural endowments of tree topped ridges, snow covered peaks, rippling & sparkling streams and famous mountain lakes, it is an embodiment of ... read more

Having visited Sikkim in 2008, which had mesmerized us with its natural beauty and grandeur, we decided to visit the land of Seven Sisters, as the seven North eastern states of India a collectively called. So in May, 2009 we embarked upon our journey to Arunachal Pradesh, the easternmost state of India and aptly named as the 'land to dawn lit mountains'. We started from New Delhi and took a flight to Guwahati, the capital of Assam and reached their late in the afternoon. We took a pre-paid taxi from the Airport itself (we were charged Rs.2200/- for the journey) and embarked upon the next phase of our journey to Tezpur. We reached Tezpur late in the evening and booked into a Hotel for overnight stay. From Tezpur one can embark for onward journey to Arunachal ... read more

Sikri is an very old settlement situated in the upper Vindhyachal ranges which is now almost eroded through the vagaries of nature over the eons. It was once situated on the banks of a large natural lake, which has now mostly dried up. It is a pre-historic site where some stone-age tools have been found alongwith Ochre painted Pottery which date back to 2nd Century B.C and its prolonged occupation by mankind is reflected in the Painted Grey Ware belonging to the 1200-800 B.C which have also been discovered from this region. Sikri finds mention in the Mahabharata as ‘Saik’. The present name is derived from combination of the city built by Akbar named as ‘Fathepur’ and added to this is the pre-historic village of Sikri, thus naming the place as ‘Fatehpur Sikri’. Present day Fatehpur ... read more

Taj Mahal is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the world, and is also a UNESCO World Heritage site . The Taj is the most beautiful monument built by the Mughals, built entirely of white marble. The Taj seems to glow in the light of the full moon. Taj Mahal was built as a mausoleum by Emperor Shah Jahan (died 1666 A.D.) in the memory of his dear wife and queen Mumtaz Mahal at Agra, India. It is an "sheer poetry in marble". The grave of queen Mumtaz Mahal is placed in the lower chamber which is now no longer open for public viewing. The grave of Shah Jahan was added to it later. The queen’s real name was Arjumand Banu. In the tradition of the Mughals, important ladies of the royal family were ... read more
