Iceberg From Upsala Glacier
This stunning blue color is caused by the weight of the ice above
From a base in El Calafate, in southwest Patagonia on the Chilean border, we explored Los Glaciares National Park. The five glaciers we saw there are clustered around the vividly turquoise Lago Argentino, the largest lake in the country. Nothing had prepared us for the spectacle we found there! Though technically inanimate, the glaciers and the massive frozen forms that constantly fall from them did truly seem to be life forms. As we watched, they moaned, split, and released mountainous segments into the lake, each with a thundering splash that caused several minutes of high wake. Our bo [View Full Entry]

We rested under a grove of monkey puzzle trees

Heading north along a bumpy, unpaved road through "la ruta de los lagos" (route of the seven lakes) we took in the jaw-dropping views and began to dream about the adventures that awaited us. The ride ended at the tranquil village of San Martin de los Andes, where we parted ways for 3 1/2 days so that Bill could head off on a long-planned fly fishing excursion and Carol could explore the [View Full Entry]

Rivers like this make Bill's casting arm twitch
As we enter our fourth week in this sweet mountain city, our joys and challenges continue. In the category of joys, Bill definitely focuses on fishing, especially his first flyfishing trip last Saturday. He went with a guide to the beautiful Limay River which drains into Lake Nahuel Huapi. Bill says that this sparkling lake (which is a key feature of the scenery here in Bariloche) reminds him of Lake Tahoe, but with 1/20th of the people. The River Limay is about the size of the Deschutes River in Oregon and is the clearest, cleanest river he's ever seen. For fishermen, [View Full Entry]

Tango in Buenos Aires
We watched some pretty classy tango dances at a Milonga
The last 10 days have been a full, dazzling adventure, and before the colors and sounds completely fade, we want to put words to a few of our more vivid memories... The punishing flight from Chicago had been delayed by a blizzard, so it was disorienting to step off the plane in Buenos Aires into a blast of heat and humidity...think St. Louis or Washington DC in late July. Of course, it is late summer here (the equivalent of August). At the suggestion of our friends Catherine and Dale, we had booked 2 nights in a small tango house (Casa Maria [View Full Entry]
