After planning this trip for over 5 years, we are finally venturing off next week. We will be driving over 3000 miles from New England to the southern part of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. We bought our piece of land 6 years ago and built a house last year. Can't wait to make it our home!

A week in Corpus Christi is a week too much. We are both so glad to have left. We got our van back late Friday afternoon and headed south Saturday morning....not too soon. We've landed in South Padre Island....about 20 miles this side of the border. If all goes well, we'll be crossing over sometime tomorrow. We don't know what to expect at the border and not wanting to be held up anymore, we hired a broker. I'm sure we could cross over ourselves and fill out all the necessary paperwork...but we're loaded up with 2 dogs and a 12' trailer full of "stuff". That just makes for more papers to be filled out and more questions to be answered. I do believe a broker will make our lives a little simpler...we hope. We'll see. In ... read more

Got our van back yesterday, but on the way back to the hotel the "service engine soon" light came on and it began to hesitate and buck. Bill turned right around and went back, but being Friday afternoon...everyone was gone. They told us to bring it back this morning, which he did. Thank god it was just antifreeze that had got into places it shouldn't have....not a big problem. SO.....we will back on the road this morning heading further south. Since we can't cross the border till Monday, I'm hoping we can find a another cheap place on the beach at South Padre Island...about 20 miles this side of Brownsville. May as well enjoy our last full day in the States! I will blog either later today or tomorrow morning with our location. ... read more

Good News/Bad News

Well, the good news is that we actually enjoyed our day today. Took off in our rental car and travelled around the area....out to the barrier beach, stopping along the way. We even visited a decommissioned aircraft carrier that they've made into a museum. It was fun day and we got to see more of this area than just this motel room and immediate area. The bad news is that we won't be able to cross over the border till Monday. The part for the van didn't come in today. They've promised that it would be in tomorrow and that we would have our vehicle back by the end of the day. That would be Friday afternoon. There are no border crossings Saturdays or Sundays. So, I think Saturday morning we'll head south, closer to Brownsville.....just ... read more

Well, Hermine has passed...but now we're dealing with the van. Last night (Monday eve) was pretty wild with much rain and wind.....lots and lots of wind. It sounded like a typical New England Nor'Easter lying in bed listening. The difference being that it was 80 degrees and muggy outside.....not 10 degrees and snowing. Now, we have to deal with the van. Tomorrow morning, we bring it in to the local Ford dealership where they will determine whether we need a whole manifold, or can get away with just a part. We're hoping for just the part, of course, mainly because it's about a $400 difference in price. Whatever it be, we'd love them to finish the job tomorrow so we can continue to Brownsville by early evening....and cross the border Thursday morning. Friday morning will be ... read more

Our luck has run out. We made it within 2.5 hours of the border (2300 miles) without hitting any traffic or bad weather. The van, the dogs, lodging.....everything perfect, till now. Tropical storm Hermine is keeping us here for a few days. Supposed to dump up to 6-8 inches of rain here tomorrow. We also began smelling anitfreeze a couple of days back. We stopped often to check fluid levels and kept our eye on the temp gauge...but no real big problem occured. Once we got into Corpus Christi, we found a place to get the oil changed and this situation checked. I wish it were just the radiator. That would be simple. We need a manifold....to the tune of about $800. If this was going to happen, we're just glad it's here and not once ... read more

Almost to the Border

We left Mobile, AL yesterday morning early. After walking the dogs and having something to eat, we were on the road by 8:30. That may not seem very early to alot of people (especially us!), but to actually be underway at that time is great. We've been on the road around 9 - 10 other mornings.....lots to do in the mornings! I am actually taking my time this morning to write in this blog...and it's only 6:15am. Yesterday's drive seemed very long to me. Louisianna is a very long state....so is Texas. We've got a 2 day drive to the border from here and now we see a tropical storm is brewing in the Gulf heading straight for Brownsville. Damn. This will be the first time since we left, that the potential for crappy weather is ... read more

On The Road....Again

We left N.C. this morning around 11a.m. What a wonderful stay with our friends Deb and Herb! Thanks again for letting us unload the trailer on your front lawn and leave all our crap out there for 3 days. Thank goodness they have no neighbors. I'm just sorry I didn't get a picture of the mess. We needed to get the brakes done on the trailer....and we needed to re-pack it. There was a bit too much weight riding in the front, so we ended up staying for 4 nights. The dogs loved it as they had many acres, and other dogs, to run around with. This morning, it was back in the van, but they seemed to adapt just fine. We made it to Greensboro, GA. Found a wonderful place called the Jameson Inn for ... read more

Hi All....hanging out in Vass, N.C. for a few days. Getting the brakes on the trailer checked out. With the load that we're carrying, that trailer sure needs those brakes working! This is not a bad place to "hang". We're on an 11 acre horse farm where the dogs can romp and run with the other dogs here. My good friend of 30 years lives here and has warmly opened her doors to Bill and I...and the dogs. We're getting quite comfy, too! We should be back on the road by Thursday. We've been doing about 300-350 miles per day. We're travelling the slow lane all the way...not going over 55 mph....just can't. Nothing wrong with that, though. This is a nice break for us....stopping here. Just wish we've got breaks like this coming up. Once ... read more

I guess I was being optimistic when I thought I'd be blogging our trip every day. Our days begin around 5am when Lobo wakes up and wants to play. It ends around 9 or 10pm when we hit the bed in our hotel room. I promise to blog weekly. That sounds more likely, but I may do so more often. Just keep checking back. Right now we are in Newport News, VA. Bills' two sisters and his Mom are in this area, so we came to visit while enroute. Tomorrow, we set sail for Vass, N.C......where a friend of mine lives. The trip to get to this point began Thursday afternoon about 2:15. We left the Cape and made it to Southbury, CT. After being turned away by 3 hotels because we had the dogs, I ... read more

So much to do! This is not your typical move...no way. Moving to another location in the U.S. is simple compared to this. Mexico will allow us to cross the border once, just once, with household "stuff". Transporting all our wordly possessions is both an art and a science. To import household good, we must list everything...and I mean everything. Each and every electronic item and/or appliance must have listed it's model number and serial number on the manifest. Each box must be numbered and everything in each box must be listed. This is becoming quite a chore for us. Bill and I have been working for a while now packing. I must have this done by Tuesday so I can bring it to the Embassy and get approval. If that's not enough, we still have ... read more
