Bill and Gerri are out dodging rain drops, leaving me and the Tramp here at the campground, shivering a bit in the cold rain. So I'll take care of the blog while they are gone. The title of today's blog just about says it all. It began raining probably about midnight last night. Tramp and I were covered and parked under a tree, but we still got a bit wet as the mud splashed up on our wheels. Gerri and Bill stayed fairly dry in the tent, but the there were a few small puddles in the tent when they awoke. They considered packing everything up and waiting for it to clear and then heading out, but good sense prevailed. They decided instead to walk to McDonalds, do some research on the computer, and pack up ... read more

After a month of following the maps and directions along the Camino de Santiago, today we were on our own as we cycled toward Digoin where we can hook up with the Eurovelo Route 6, which will take us towards Switzerland. Bill had printed out cycling directions for Montbrison from viaMichelin.com, but we ended up making up our own route as we cycled through the Gorge du Loire along the Loire River. This gorge was not as scenic as the Lot Gorges, but it provided plenty of beautiful views. The first 40 kms. from Le Puy to Retournac were easy, flat. Then we climbed and climbed some more above the Loire River. An equal descent into Aurec sur Loire then more climbing, a bit unexpected as we thought the route along the river would be fairly ... read more

We slept until 8 a.m. this morning, a first. Showers, put clothes in the washer, eat breakfast, and hang clothes on the line here in the campground. Just ordinary stuff, but it felt good to be ordinary rather than having to pack up the tent and get on the road. We had picked up a walking tour guide of the Le Puy yesterday, so we spent a couple of hours viewing the sites: The Place du Martouret -- where between 1793 and 1795, 41 people met their deaths at the guillotine. The many small, winding streets where thousands of lace makers have created and sold their beautiful work. The Cathedral -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its 134 steps up to its door. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries. The Chapel of Penitents -- ... read more

Ever since we left Santiago de Compestella on June 15, we have been following the Pilgrim Route which begins in Le Puy, France, and ends in Santiago, Spain. Of course, we’ve been traveling the route backwards as we head towards Switzerland, but today we reached Le Puy, the end or the beginning of the route, depending on how you look at it. We began the day with 15 kms. of climbing, fairly steep about half the time. Then it was 15 kms. of downhill -- beautiful, sweeping downhill. With just one or two problems. First, at the summit, Bill got a flat tire. A small tack. Just as we began to change the tire, we heard the dull, distant sound of thunder. About halfway down the mountain, the thunder got a lot closer. We got Lady ... read more

It’s 9 p.m. and we just finished eating dinner. But I’ll get to that in just a minute. First of all, I need to finish up a few more French tidbits. 1. French kissing -- Not what you’re thinking. Every time people meet or say good-bye they do this cheek-to-cheek-kiss-the-air routine. It looks awkward and a bit pretentious. Anyway, when the French family that we met at last night’s gite said good-bye this morning, the woman “French kissed” me. I knew what to do, but it still felt weird. By the way, we taught a couple of those kids how to play our favorite card game last night. They caught on fast. 2. I also don’t get the French (and Portuguese and Spanish) store hours. Most stores open at 9 or 10 in the morning, close ... read more

Blog -- July 8 Col d’Aubrac (The Summit of Aubrac) We dodged into our tent at 9 last night as the rain began, thankful that it had waited until bedtime to begin. Though I had feared it would be cold, it was actually quite comfortable. In fact, we zipped the vestibule of the tent closed but left the tent door itself wide open all night, probably not the smartest idea in the world, but no wild animals attacked us. We slept well, as usual. We’re not sure whether it’s the exercise, the nightly wine, or the fresh air -- but we have both slept well every night so far. The day began with an 8 kilometer climb to Salgues. We feared the worst as the topo map shows a very steep climb. We were both in ... read more

It is with a bit of sadness that we say good-bye to the River Lot tomorrow. We have been pedaling beside this river, along its gorgeous gorge, for the past several days. The cycling has been easy; the road surface, good; the scenery spectacular. But tomorrow, indeed, we must head into the mountains. Today was a short day into St. Come d’Olt, at the foot of the Monts d’Aubrac (Aubrac Mountains). It started out cold and overcast this morning, never really did warm up. I have a feeling we’ll be sleeping in full clothes tonight. We went through no real towns today; consequently, we are out of cereal and cookies (two of the four major food groups. The other two food groups are wine and cheese.). Because we had plenty of time this morning, we stopped ... read more

"Any traveling cyclist can relate the feeling of carefree abandon and catharis that pedaling evokes as layers upon layers of mental and emotional encrustations are shed. Each turn, each hill is another discovery, illuminating a place, a sensation and a perception until then hidden from view. Nothing is so utterly alive and well as the spirit of a traveler on a bicycle." ~ James E. Starr Another gorgeous, easy ride along the River Lot today. We stopped for a brief snack in the teeny, tiny town of Vieillevie. Just as we were preparing to leave, we heard music and saw a group of cyclists nearby. A quick look revealed a group called Odyssey of Hope (at least, I think that is the correct translation) -- two dozen or so physically handicapped cyclists riding who-knows-how-far with various ... read more

Gerri gave Bill the job of writing the blog the last two evenings. This evening she is turning the job over to me. Hmmm. . . Is she getting lazy or what? And I should have gotten to write it yesterday since I am Lady Liberty and yesterday was the Fourth of July. Oh well. I loved the biking yesterday and today. Almost totally flat terrain along the Cele River; my derailleurs finally got a rest. Amazing architecture -- century old homes built of stone right into the cliffs rising out of the river. Bill, of course, took dozens of photos. If we have access to the Internet, he’ll probably post of couple of those on today’s blog. Right now Tramp and I are resting in the shade under a tree at a campground. Bill and ... read more

Today we biked short (Only 32 kilometers) to Cabrerets, in the Cele River Valley.. We had cycled up the valley of the Lot River to where the Cele enters the Lot and then into the Cele Valley. Anyhow, one kilometer up the side of the gorge from Cabrerets is one of the most famous caves in Europe, Pech-Merle Grotto. It has beautiful cave drawings dating from 25,000 to 20,000 years ago. We thought we were going to have to cycle a three kilometer road uphill to the cave. But when we signed in at the campground, the host told us of a one kilometer walking trail that would take us to the grotto. We walked the trail to enter a prehistoric time. The calcite walls of the grotto sparkled with red and black drawings of mammoths, ... read more
