| 29th October 2009 Arya Nakhodazadeh | wish to visit Moldava - From: Moldova - Forgotten Europe wish to visit and sightseeing around the country. |
| 5th October 2009 Courtney | - From: Crazy Roads - Jungle Camping - Exotic Creatures Wow! I'm from the U.S.A. and live in the city. I've been to Yellow Stone National Park. There was a bear less than 25 feet away from my family and I and yet your story sounds crazier! It's so cool your able to do that stuff. |
| 20th September 2009 Wil | WOW - From: Wow! Oh what fun one can have in an abandoned Soviet Air-Base Where was this place exactly? |
| 20th August 2009 Sarah Z | I married the Toxic Texan! - From: The Breaking Up of our Glorious Friendship - Goodbye Dear Friends... Andy, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog. Truly amazing experience. It was wonderful seeing you guys again in July. You all have a very special bond. You and Mechthild must come visit us in Texas! We will cure you of this ‘vegetarianism’! Best, Sarah |
| 17th November 2007 Chris Tutt | I'm the edge of my seat - From: Braving Sandstorms in Inner Mongolia I've come back to the blog after losing the address for over a year. I came across the address again and am really enjoying reading this blog. This is almost to good to be a movie. You guys need a screenwriter to write this into a movie. I'm constantly on the edge of my seat!!! |
| 10th November 2007 Stephen Paul | Icing on the Cake - From: 2001 England to Singapore Bike Odyssey - Where are We Now (5 years After)? First I was going to say that the 2001 Bike Odyssey Bikepacker blog was hands down the best travelblog on the site- then another comment got me thinking, it probably is the most amazing travelblog yet! It wasnt a travelblog about a 2 week vacation from work, it wasnt a "round the world" trip that composes 85% of travelblogs, it wasnt a travelblog about living in a particular foreign place. It was an amazing thing what you guys did! This blog entry is like icing on a very rich cake though- I think the most fascinating part of all great stories is the whole "where are they now" thing! Amazing to see how people change, and are changed, by travelling. Thanks for the post! |
| 21st October 2007 Sorina | Shweet! - From: Moldova - Forgotten Europe I am from Ungheni! That is cool I ran into this.. oh it is making me homesick! Oh well Michigan is fun too! lol |
| 23rd July 2007 Toby | Hello - From: 2001 England to Singapore Bike Odyssey - Where are We Now (5 years After)? Hello guys, looking forward to seeing half of you soon, the other half as soon as possible. Toby btw, Rosey was not one of my students, much as Andy would like to believe. It was much more interesting than that! But, I'm sure there are many more details I could take issue with, if I were that kind of guy... Judge for yourselves! |
| 4th July 2007 anonymous | It was in the year 2001 - From: Peoples Army Say - "No, you not cycle on our Motorway"! ........it's a memorialblog......... :-)) |

| 16th May 2007 Ash | - From: 2001 England to Singapore Bike Odyssey - Where are We Now (5 years After)? Brilliant read, had me hanging on every posting. Thanks so very much for taking the time to share your travel journal of this amazing journey. |
| 11th May 2007 Andreas | miss... - From: 2001 England to Singapore Bike Odyssey - Where are We Now (5 years After)? your blog... Got really used to your stories! |
| 18th April 2007 The Sushi Cowboy | Small world - From: A week in Ulaan Baatar - and the temperature plummets... Regarding that Ben guy you met...I've read the books about their adventures. Written by Colin Angus, "Amazon Extreme" and "Lost In Mongolia" are the stories of their rafting trips along the Amazon and Yenisey rivers. Not really well written, but exciting and adventureous nonetheless. The fact that you met him on your trip is pretty cool... |
| 17th April 2007 The Sushi Cowboy | Starting from scratch - From: The Last Supper I've noticed your blog on the site for some time, and have read snippets here and there. Now I am finally sitting down and reading it from start to finish. I'll let you know when I'm done. |
| 17th April 2007 vick | - From: Moldova - Forgotten Europe is the weed plant actualy in moldova cause hell i want to go there |
| 13th April 2007 danik | Fantastic Blogs - From: 2001 England to Singapore Bike Odyssey - Where are We Now (5 years After)? Most amzaing blog I have ever read (as I am also a cyclist, but i would never dream of doing a trip like that) Intresting read. Fantastic Adventure. Feels like we were there with ya. Well Done! |
| 12th April 2007 Tim S. | Great ending but... - From: 2001 England to Singapore Bike Odyssey - Where are We Now (5 years After)? unfortunately, it is an ending, which sucks. I guess I just didn't want it to come to an end, and funnily enough I feel kinda bummed-out that it is over (I can only imagine what it must have been like for you at that moment), anywayz, looking forward to reading more memorablogs of your other excursions... |
| 11th April 2007 friend | kathryn missed out - From: 2001 England to Singapore Bike Odyssey - Where are We Now (5 years After)? what can i say? very inspiring. all i can say, kathryn, your girl back in 2002 missed out by not waiting for you. her loss, the story was missing a happy ending with her after all the longing. if you ever turn this into a movie, make sure you and her get together in the end! |
| 11th April 2007 MatevzH | Great end! - From: 2001 England to Singapore Bike Odyssey - Where are We Now (5 years After)? I was following your blog for the past few months (i believe from China on). Excellent read with nice photos. Gave me to think, whether to do some similar stuff or not (though i don't have such friends to do it with me). This "five years after" post was just great, just to see what former travellers do five years on... |
| 10th April 2007 Marcoelitaliano | Till next epic journey - From: 2001 England to Singapore Bike Odyssey - Where are We Now (5 years After)? Andy, has been a real pleasure to follow in real time (but 5 years after it actually took place) the whole journey from UK till Singapore. It would be nice to read journals about other similar bike trips you have done in the past. And, by the way, happy birthday. Marco |
| 10th April 2007 Kari | Thanks for the inspiration - From: 2001 England to Singapore Bike Odyssey - Where are We Now (5 years After)? It is so inspiring to see what happens five years later... does that travel bug stay with you? I think for most it does, but whether you do something about it is another thing altogether... it is great to see that everyone did!! |
| 10th April 2007 Bob | A nice ending - From: 2001 England to Singapore Bike Odyssey - Where are We Now (5 years After)? That was fantastic trip, and finding out what happened later makes for a nice ending. After doing something like that, I could see where going back to a computer or whatever for 20 years would drive someone nuts. I guess its a good thing that I just read things like this on a computer rather than doing stuff like this. Thanks for sharing your story. |
| 10th April 2007 Jackie B | Happy Birthday Andy!! - From: 2001 England to Singapore Bike Odyssey - Where are We Now (5 years After)? Deepest gratitude for taking us along for the ride!! awesome pics :) wishing you the best!! |
| 10th April 2007 Stayloose | Congratulations - From: The Breaking Up of our Glorious Friendship - Goodbye Dear Friends... 13,000 miles and you get "home" and your parents aren't in! I know somehow that will happen to me. Brilliant blog. I haven't read so many of your blogs as I'm on my own cycle trip I its too much to read them in crappy internets cafes after e-mailing my folks to tell them I'm not dead. BUT when I saw you'd finished I had to read it. For some reason it almost felt like I'd finished my own trip myself just reading yours. I'll print the rest out when I get home, even if it does cost me 50quid in printer ink. Congrats mate. stayloose - ben |
| 10th April 2007 Jackie | Happy birthday - From: 2001 England to Singapore Bike Odyssey - Where are We Now (5 years After)? a very happy birthday to you. have a good one . Jax X |
| 10th April 2007 Jackie | A tear - From: The Breaking Up of our Glorious Friendship - Goodbye Dear Friends... A tear slipped down my face as I read this blog. I know how devestated I feel after coming back from a month in Thailand let alone this trip. I have loved these. I am no cycler and never will be due to health problems, but I do have a free spirit. These blogs have enabled me to live through these experienses. Thank you Andy so much. Maybe see you in Blackpool. Jax |

| 30th March 2007 Stephen Paul | Simply Incredible Story - From: WE FINALLY MADE IT!: Adventure's End - SINGAPORE ! What an inspiration to everyone out there who longs to travel and explore the world. You dont need fancy hotels, rental cars, airplane flights and guided tours. Just your dreams and a bicycle! Even Genghis Khan and the romaing mongols would be proud of your pan-asian adventure- although he would be dissapointed by your lack of pillage and plunder. I really hope this story gets edited and turned into a book someday, so I can read the tale start to finish!! Possibly the best ever bloggers on this website!!! |
| 30th March 2007 Mark | - From: WE FINALLY MADE IT!: Adventure's End - SINGAPORE ! I'm so proud of you guys! Thanks for taking the time to post all this - it has been an immense pleasure to read! Best of luck to you. |
| 30th March 2007 Snowfrake | Congrats!! - From: WE FINALLY MADE IT!: Adventure's End - SINGAPORE ! What an amazing journey, you should be so proud! You have inspired me so many times throughout your trip. Life is too short to be sitting at a computer, reading about someone else's adventures! (although your blog does make for a very interesting read;) take care, Kristen (aka Snowfrake) |

| 28th March 2007 jaxw17 | I am gob smacked - From: The Final Leg - after 13,500 miles cycling: Singapore awaits us... Now it's coming to an end I don't know what to say. i can only imagine having achieved what you have . In fact if any one had told me before reading these blogs that people had cycled to Singapore from the uk i woul have said that they were mad. John you have to start another blog following this even if it is about your every day life. I love the way you write. Jackie (Jax) |
| 26th March 2007 Scott Z -- Toxic Texan | I think I forgot Nick - From: Friends Reunited - We gather for the Final Leg in Melaka Hey Andy, I think I forgot Nick in my last entry. Please put him in there if i did. Or anybody else, I'm getting old and can't remember squat |
| 26th March 2007 Scott Z -- Toxic Texan | Ready to chuck it all and get on my bike again - From: Friends Reunited - We gather for the Final Leg in Melaka Hi Andy. haven't seen you guys since my wedding last July. It is an odd feeling looking back at our trip through a different person's eyes. As I sit at work, reflecting on our trip, I can't help but wonder when I'll get fed up again with the work-a-day life and get back on the bike. Sarah's up for it but I need to accumulate a bit of scratch first. This trip was my preventative cure for a mid-life crisis. Next time, I set out on a long trip, I want it to be retirement. Hopefully sooner than later. I'd almost trade my left nut for it to be May 2001 again looking forward into the unknown with group of crazies. Not knowing what was in store for us. Andy, Rory, Tobes, Nick, Leslie, Stephane -- I miss all you guys. Hopefully we can get together for the next World Cup. |
| 24th March 2007 Andreas | THANK YOU!!! - From: Friends Reunited - We gather for the Final Leg in Melaka Andrew, reading your first blog when you were in Ukraine I could hardly believe you were heading to Singapore by bike. Congratulations, you have made it! Like lots of others around the world, I was looking forward to your posts since then. Thank you for writing it up, you took me on a small "vacation" every couple of days. Looking forward to read more! Andreas |

| 23rd March 2007 anonymous | enhoyed so much! - From: Friends Reunited - We gather for the Final Leg in Melaka Hey Andy, I've enjoyed this so much, and will wait patiently for the final installments. I must admit I"m sad that this adventure you shared is ending, I sure have looked forward to and enjoyed each installment. Take care, Jackie B |
| 23rd March 2007 jaxw17 | My stomach flipped - From: Friends Reunited - We gather for the Final Leg in Melaka when I realised that this was one of the last one. I am trying to get my head round a pineapple sandwitch. I have had ham , cheese and pineapple i know you would miss on the ham being veggie. I am starting to worry about the state of stephanes mental health. Either that or he is a miserable sod. I can just imagine the conversation falling over it's self and aided by beer as well. You must have had so much to catch up on and to some degree you have been in solitary since splitting up. I am going to PM you and find out where you are now 'cos i would love to keep up with your latest travels. What an achievement UK to singapore via the moon.....well done to you all. |
| 23rd March 2007 Tim S. | Wow!!! - From: Friends Reunited - We gather for the Final Leg in Melaka I can't believe it's almost over...it almost feels like the readers(I, at least) have been there with you, through it all...I can't wait for the grand finale and I'm hoping there'll be more blogs of your previous adventures, or maybe even your current one. |
| 21st March 2007 Bob | Three Kings - From: The Coastal Route - keeping klear of Kuala I liked three kings, maybe its because I like George Cloney and Mark Walburg. But even though I like them, that doesn't make me gay. |
| 20th March 2007 jaxw17 | was glad you were here - From: The Coastal Route - keeping klear of Kuala When I logged on today. By the time I have finished reading your camping excapades I am itching all over and looking over my shoulder for any sort of wild animal that may be lurking. How perceptive you were about Bush. Don't worry about the parents thing I think every parent in the world has forked out in one way or another. Your time will come with your Son. I am worried now about these stopping I need to know what the next steps are. what happened........oh please say you won't leave us dangling? |
| 20th March 2007 CL2 | HI - From: The Coastal Route - keeping klear of Kuala Hi, it is so great to read your blog.. Nice photo, nice description .. and so on. I am at Malaysia Melaka. So when I read your blog, i know you are just not far from where I am. Good luck to you and your trip.. and hope you enjoy the days in Malaysia. |
| 20th March 2007 Curious | where is chris? - From: Crazy Roads - Jungle Camping - Exotic Creatures Gannes. surprised you have not mentioned about your son Chris until now. Were you emailing or calling him? |
| 20th March 2007 TravelBlog Reader | I love the way u are - From: The Coastal Route - keeping klear of Kuala Gannes, Just enjoying the way you narrate the story. (esp ..if Bush gets his way, that guy’s desperate to kill Saddam.. ) making us believe we are riding with u in 2002 ! |
| 20th March 2007 KS | Buddhism sign for peace - From: The Coastal Route - keeping klear of Kuala Hi Bikepacker, nice blog. the Buddhism sign for peace is the inverse of the swastika. AH switched it. Looks like your photo is from the back of the sign, hence it looks like the swastika. Peace out. |
| 19th March 2007 Mark | - From: The Coastal Route - keeping klear of Kuala Hi Andrew, McDonalds used red and yellow for their colors, as these two colors are the most likely to trigger hunger, psychologicaly speaking. Looks like this blog will coming to an end fairly soon. I've enjoyed it SO MUCH ever since the Siberian sweetgrass caught my attention. I'll be reading right to the end! |
| 19th March 2007 shane | error error - From: The Coastal Route - keeping klear of Kuala its the wallace line in indonesia |
| 19th March 2007 haysie | Happy 21st. - From: Crazy Roads - Jungle Camping - Exotic Creatures Hope you partied like it was 1999! |
| 19th March 2007 Tracy | my eyes are like road maps - From: Crazy Roads - Jungle Camping - Exotic Creatures My work colleague hooked me up on your blog... oh my goodness... work has come to a grinding halt for the past three days as I am hooked on every word you have written so far... wow.... did not realise we had real men out there... you go boy.... cant wait for the rest.... cheers |
| 18th March 2007 Geoff | Great read - From: Crazy Roads - Jungle Camping - Exotic Creatures I've enjoyed reading your memorablog all the way through, it's nearly inspired me to get out my travel diaries from the past 20 years. Let us know how it ended up with your girlfriend. Thanks. |
| 17th March 2007 jaxw17 | Dr Doolittle - From: Crazy Roads - Jungle Camping - Exotic Creatures You are getting a right wildlife following. How wonderful for your Son to have these journals to read and to inspire him. He must be really proud of you. He won't know it yet 'cos at 16 you don't. I like the thoughts about the soil and dirt and wonder if in years to come the mixing of them like that will screw up some scientist looking at soil. Still enjoying. Jackie |
| 15th March 2007 Marcoelitaliano | A beautiful mind - From: Ringgits, Rubber-Stamps, and Remnants of an Imperial Time... In fact, I believe the correct title was neither "a wonderful mind" nor "the beautiful mind" but rather "a beautiful mind". The book, at least, has this title. Andy, I'm really curious to see how this long adventure ends up, keep the entries coming. Marco |
| 15th March 2007 anonymous | Movie title - From: Ringgits, Rubber-Stamps, and Remnants of an Imperial Time... I think the movie is called ''The beautiful mind'' not the wonderful mind. Anyway it is a fantastic movie. |
| 15th March 2007 jaxw17 | Jackie - From: Ringgits, Rubber-Stamps, and Remnants of an Imperial Time... The stamps are such a cool idea. I like the one with your email address it would save a lot of time. I am also looking for the address of the guy that signed your passport stamp ! LOL That burning and causing smog is happening round ChangMai at the moment. As usual brilliant and a good read. |
| 15th March 2007 Random Reader | Wow jacky... - From: An un-wanted Appointment with Drug Smugglers... i have to admit jacky that was the most close minded easterner thing to do. nice job representing whereever you are from. I suspect that you wont own up to your country because you are worried you will embarass yourself with your behaviour. Personally, i am a canadian and as west as you get before you hit the international time zone. I have to admit, i am impressed by this BBC watching european who has taken the time to tell us all about the journey and show that there are some brave souls willing to do it in a way that avoids the 'tour bus mentality' |
| 14th March 2007 Bob | I hope that isn't a hint! - From: An un-wanted Appointment with Drug Smugglers... I hope that wasn't a hint, the part about doing something real stupid (the last sentence). This is such a good read that cliff hangers arn't needed. I'm looking forward to the completion of the trip but also kind of worried as what will I pass my time reading once this is done. Signed a faithful reader. |
| 13th March 2007 anonymous | Rich Widows travel around the world - From: An un-wanted Appointment with Drug Smugglers... I felt sorry for a person like u who travel around the world but still judge things with such a narrow minded and Egoistic way....well it doesnt make a bloody different whether u have traveled with ur bike all around the world or just staying in your own sweet home watching BBC...well you are just a so typical westerner and after travelling so many countries, you dont have any different from those rich widows who travel with the money left by their dead husbands.....God bless..... . - Jacky |
| 13th March 2007 jaxw17 | Jackie - From: An un-wanted Appointment with Drug Smugglers... What a palava what with bears tigers and drug smugglers. Talking of ringgts made me remember our breif aquantance with Malaysia at KL airport. We were just passing through and had no currency so i paid for our purchases by credit card. who ever did the data inputting must of been pissing them selves laughin at them - 2 coffees ...............................1 tube of hemmaroid cream........for Dave. I can't believe that you are probably only looking at another 2 weeks. Have you travelled since and are you going to post a blog about it? |
| 11th March 2007 Mark | - From: Nobody told me that Bears attack in Malaysia! So I assume that if anyone needs to know the cost of a new pair of pants near the thai/malay border, you would be the one to ask. |
| 10th March 2007 Jay | Speachless - From: Nobody told me that Bears attack in Malaysia! Man, what an encounter! You are surely lucky. I have been following you since you were in Russia. I surely do not want you to die on the road. Play safe and good luck. |
| 9th March 2007 haysie | top notch - From: Nobody told me that Bears attack in Malaysia! The camping scare was brilliant. |
| 9th March 2007 Jackie | Dogs foaming - From: And then there was None - I was alone, in my tent, on The Beach Ok then I am warming to Stephane a bit now that he has gone. Can't get my head round anyone who does not like Lanta is he frightened of enjoying something. just think if you had persevered you could have been well established now selling your chang on the beach....oh what a dream job. |
| 9th March 2007 Jackie | excuse me where is the airport? - From: Nobody told me that Bears attack in Malaysia! Here I am sat in the deepest lancashire with a cup of coffee in front of me...wine just getting to temp. Holding my breath while I read your encounter with the bear. I was knackred when you got to that checkpoint. I get that jelly feeling in my legs when I have been shopping too much and I have just come across a bargain. Loving it as ever. makes my day when I log on and see that you have posted. My hubby is sick of me saying...and do you know what happened then.. |
| 7th March 2007 Mike from S.F. | Ditto!!! - From: Over the Isthmus of Kra to the Andaman Sea. Andy, I have been following your memorablog since the start. And although I haven't made a comment (until now), I just want to add to the chorus of voices saying, this is a great story and I've really enjoyed reading it. thanks. |
| 6th March 2007 Jackie | oh dear - From: Bikepacker in Ko Lanta - Like a Fish out of Water... Stephane is getting on my nerves and I am not even with him ! Whats with all the puctures is he gnawing the tyres. I loved, loved, loved Koh Lanta and would like to go back at some stage. The scenery around Krabi is very dramatic. In January we drove to Koh Lanta and then we drove from krabi to phuket and you could see the landscape changing. I am just imagining you clanging along with all those bottles LOL |
| 2nd March 2007 Jackie | It must be quite hard for you - From: The Weird and Wonderful Burmese Visa Run writing this blog and thinking all the time about the adventures that you had. I don't know what you are doing now or if you have had any major travels since this but I don't know how you settle down after it. I bet there are times that you don't believe that you actually did it. whatever happen they can't take your memories away from you....well they can if they use mind bending machines like they do on Dr Who etc... |

| 1st March 2007 Jackie | Again in May - From: Over the Isthmus of Kra to the Andaman Sea. We had a good time but were vastly disapointed with Phuket that has turned into a real circus. We are going back to Samui on the 30th April for a month. Business class would you believe, well i don't. got a good deal and getting soft. You keep up the good work. you must have seen a Thailand that I can only dream about. |

| 14th February 2007 Jm | u r a master story teller ! - From: We Lost Scott by the Mekong - the Banana Trick failed...? Hey Andy, Read u all the way till now. I appreciate ur guts and enthusiasm. You are a great traveller and a master story teller too. great going. awaiting ur next episode.cheers. |
| 14th February 2007 anonymous | - From: We Lost Scott by the Mekong - the Banana Trick failed...? Things are really heating up, in more ways than one. I'm still lovin' the blog, and I think you've all acquired fan status long ago. Also, I like your idea of a memorablog site. If/when you get it off the ground, I can blog a written travel journal from 2000, to help get things going. If your site gets becomes successful, you may be surprised at the amount of income such a site can produce. |
| 13th February 2007 Bikepacker | From the author - BIKEPACKER - From: We Lost Scott by the Mekong - the Banana Trick failed...? Wow! I didn't realise you'd be so interested???? I've had a few mails concerning the loss of Scott - he's acquired fan status it seems. Sorry Bob about the comment that we wouldn't hear from Scott for a long while, hope it didn't spoil the suspense too much. That bit was added by me the other day and I shouldn't deviate from the original journal - you're right! However, I can tell you that there are a few surprises and that things don't go as planned - there are still troubles ahead.... So, I hope you enjoy the rest of the story of the bike odyssey. And Thanks again for the kind mails. ANDY (Bikepacker) |
| 12th February 2007 BoB | About Scott - From: We Lost Scott by the Mekong - the Banana Trick failed...? Is that the way it was written in your Diary? I think a bit of the suspense is now lost as we now know he is out of the picture. But of course I'll still read as this is the best bike read that I've ever come upon. |
| 12th February 2007 anonymous | Jackie - From: We Lost Scott by the Mekong - the Banana Trick failed...? OMG where is Scott ? Were you not really worried ? |
| 12th February 2007 anonymous | Dont go home - From: We Lost Scott by the Mekong - the Banana Trick failed...? Hiya mate, been checking ya blogs and you say you cant imagine life back home. Wel I travelled for 12 months with my girlfriend and I cant begin to tell you how hard it is to settle back into normal life!!!! KEEP TRAVELLING Andy |

| 9th February 2007 Lisohenka | - From: OMSK - city of Hardcore Partying! seems like you've been in omsk in mid-90-ies... or you just dont have windows in your own house :) |
| 6th February 2007 Susan, Stockholm | What an absolutely wonderful journey! - From: Out of Inner-Mongolia and through The Great Wall And awful in some ways! In Stockholm right now the north wind is blowing, its only a few degrees below zero, but I cant see myself camping even outside my own apartment. I hope you made it, if it was important to you. I will keep on reading, (although I should be working). To me, the most fascinating part is not the hardships in Russia or the desert, but how you all get along on the road. I guess thats real travel experience to me! And good luck on future travels, alone or in equally good company. |
| 5th February 2007 anonymous | - From: Camping on the Ho-Chi-Minh Trail - them Surrounded by Gun-Toting Rebels ! good blog, Laos really is an amazing country, never know whats next. |
| 5th February 2007 Susin | Wow! - From: Camping on the Ho-Chi-Minh Trail - them Surrounded by Gun-Toting Rebels ! Hey, I love reading through the other blogs and until now have never felt the need to write a comment, but can I just say WOW! You guys are the ultimate adventurers!! |
| 5th February 2007 ilovemangosteen | craziness - From: Camping on the Ho-Chi-Minh Trail - them Surrounded by Gun-Toting Rebels ! i've been dying to cycle through se asia. you guys keep it safe! |
| 4th February 2007 Charley Farley | Your Memorablog is Simply Brilliant - From: Hanoi - Tomb Raiders, Rickshaw Wrecking, and Gay Love-Sick German Bikepackers! Yes, please write up your previous exploits in memorablog form. I'm not at all interested in cycling but your stories have kept me engrossed from day one! Thank you for taking the time to write them. I also agree with the previous comments that these tales would make a really entertaining film. Not unlike the motor-cycling Che Guevara movie albeit a little more uncouth (farting, drinking, womanising). Priceless. |
| 1st February 2007 ninee | Take care for your trip - From: The Great Push South through North Vietnam Your trip look not comfortable but you can touch with real life of local people. |
| 28th January 2007 contreras_alejandro | Go for it - From: Hanoi - Tomb Raiders, Rickshaw Wrecking, and Gay Love-Sick German Bikepackers! Andrew, a quick note to thank you for sharing story and yes!, keep going. Its truly interesting. Best |

| 27th January 2007 Tom H. | Awesome! - From: Hanoi - Tomb Raiders, Rickshaw Wrecking, and Gay Love-Sick German Bikepackers! Just read your blog for the first time today and I loved it! I'll have to go back to the start to get the full-meal deal. As for your previous adventures, you should definitely write them up. They sound amazing! |
| 26th January 2007 Marcoelitaliano | A good idea - From: Hanoi - Tomb Raiders, Rickshaw Wrecking, and Gay Love-Sick German Bikepackers! Hello Andy, I have beein reading your whole blog when I was back home and I do my best to keep up with your new entries. I think it would be nice to read other old travel stories from you. Expecially East Germany sounds as interesting as only something disappeared can be. Marco |
| 26th January 2007 Marty | Don't stop! - From: Hanoi - Tomb Raiders, Rickshaw Wrecking, and Gay Love-Sick German Bikepackers! Keep writing! |
| 26th January 2007 Bikepacker | Thank You Subscribers / Fans.... - From: Hanoi - Tomb Raiders, Rickshaw Wrecking, and Gay Love-Sick German Bikepackers! It's a bit spooky to have fans.... But thanks for your kind remarks about my memorablog, I didn`'t really think anyone would be interested in it when I started it but.... I shall certainly be considering now, to dust off the old journals, scan the slides and write up the old crazy stuff I've done over the years, and stuff I'm still doing. Yes, I'm still out there on the bike - last year it was Canada and the US! So, when this 2001 Odyssey blog is over, expect something else to laugh over, however, I can't promise that it will be as funny as this one. And for you Jennie: How to survive being a veggie in Nam. Well, in Mongolia and China it was fairly easy. I had a Buddha on a neckchain and a laminated card I made with drawings of animals with red crosses through them. It worked a treat coz Buddhists don't eat meat there. But in Nam, it's a different story, Buddhists eat everything and I had to learn the essential food names. I look forward to reading your journal too. Best Wishes to you all, ANDYthe BIKEPACKER |
| 26th January 2007 Clint | More would be good - From: Hanoi - Tomb Raiders, Rickshaw Wrecking, and Gay Love-Sick German Bikepackers! I've been enjoying this one immensely and would like to read of your other adventures. Well, except for New Zealand, as for some reason that seems sort of over done for bicycle stories. Also, if you going to add a wrap up, I'm really interested in the whole group dynamics, I've read bits and pieces here and there, but I find that facinating, also maybe an equipment section of a lessons learned section. |
| 26th January 2007 jack | memorablog - From: Hanoi - Tomb Raiders, Rickshaw Wrecking, and Gay Love-Sick German Bikepackers! You should really consider contacting an independent film maker, may be even hollywood, to make your journals into films. Put in a few twists here and there and it will become a classic, surpassing ' Around the World in 80 days'. The world will appreciate Bikepacker more than Borak. How can you not laugh when you see a picture with a railway crossing OVER ON a highway. I was hoping your journals will never end. |
| 26th January 2007 Jennie | Crazy... - From: Hanoi - Tomb Raiders, Rickshaw Wrecking, and Gay Love-Sick German Bikepackers! This was the best entry yet! I'm an American teaching English in Japan, and I read all of your blogs. I'm amazed at what you guys did. You should write a book! I especially liked this journal, maybe because I've been thinking about going to Vietnam for a while. I have a question. I am also a vegetarian, and was wondering how you got by requesting vegetarian food when you were constantly dealing with new cultures and languages? How did you know how to ask? Anyway, I have a blog too if you want to check it out. I think the name is Jennie T. |
| 26th January 2007 JayGuan | Go you go, Andy! - From: Hanoi - Tomb Raiders, Rickshaw Wrecking, and Gay Love-Sick German Bikepackers! I really enjoy reading your blog. Great job. It would be great if you can recount your previous travel experiences. |
| 25th January 2007 Mimi | Yesss!! - From: Hanoi - Tomb Raiders, Rickshaw Wrecking, and Gay Love-Sick German Bikepackers! I would love it if you wrote up your older journals! What a great offer for your fans! I have been thoroughly enjoying your London/Singapore Memorablog. Thank you Andy! |
| 25th January 2007 Tim S. | Great blog!! - From: Hanoi - Tomb Raiders, Rickshaw Wrecking, and Gay Love-Sick German Bikepackers! I've been reading your blogs recently from the first one, and yeah you should definitely recap your earlier adventures. Great writing, inspiring, and it's a great way for many like me to escape the boring routine of everyday living. |
| 25th January 2007 Tim S. | Hilarious - From: Escape from Kazakstan! - "We want your Sperm"! What a brilliant title "escape from cafe babushka"...that's freakin' hilarious |
| 11th January 2007 Clint | Fabulous - From: Racing along Southern Chinas coast - Destination: NAM I found the blog about a week ago, and am now up to date with the whole trip. I read so many biking stories, every day, and I have even written a couple, but this is by far the most interesting on that Ihave ever read. Having four guys, and all the drinking, and Russia and Mongolia, the whole thing is incredible. And even though its over already, I can't wait to see how it turns out, but when I watch a golf tournament thats taped, it doesn't hold my interest, interesting. Take care. |
| 8th January 2007 Gareth | Quality - From: Racing along Southern Chinas coast - Destination: NAM your blogs make my day go faster, u should right a book. |
| 5th January 2007 Jack | Macau - From: British? Portuguese? Chinese? - "I'm Confused"! My mistake. Just read your intro. Yes, it is ancient, but a good one. |
| 5th January 2007 Jack | Macau - From: British? Portuguese? Chinese? - "I'm Confused"! Are you telling us ancent history? The visas and stamps are dated 2001 and 2002. |
| 22nd December 2006 Ian | Merry Christmas - From: "What do you do when you find a dead body at the roadside"? Really enjoyed reading your post, sounds like an amazing journey with loads of excitement albeit with some harsh realities too. stay safe guys and have a good christmas |
| 21st December 2006 Jackie | Wow how sobering! - From: "What do you do when you find a dead body at the roadside"? I'm enjoying reading this so very much...always looking forward to the next post. This one was a heavy though! Keep them coming :) |
| 20th December 2006 Jackie | good - From: "I LOVE YOU" - "TWENTY DOLLARS"! As good as ever. I am off to Thailand for 3 weeks tomorrow. have a good one. |
| 20th December 2006 anonymous | WoW! - From: "I LOVE YOU" - "TWENTY DOLLARS"! This is amazing! I just fell into your blog. How did you and your group decide to do this trip? Well I guess its in your earlier blogs, I'll get started on that and comment later on. Jeff |
| 20th December 2006 John and Sylvia | Thanks for the memories - From: "I LOVE YOU" - "TWENTY DOLLARS"! Andy, I have loved following your "memorablog". It takes a certain amount of courage and foolishness to do what you did but the feeling at the end - and looking back - is one of wonder that you did it at all. I travelled overland to Australia in the late 1970s, through countries it is really difficult to visit today, when there was no Lonely Planet to guide the way and each day was an unknown future. Getting stared at by crowds of fascinated locals was a daily experience. I only exploded once (and was ashamed afterwards) but the constant scrutiny really gets to you after a while. Thanks for bringing back the memories. |
| 16th December 2006 ali | what are you guys doing now - From: Mystical Valleys, Misty Mountains, we found it - the REAL China is here! I know that this is from a few years back . What are you guys up to now?? |

| 13th December 2006 anonymous | ouch ! - From: Dudes - You will NEVER believe what just happened...! I bet you have only just got rid of that hang over. That hair was wild swinging round in front of you, very strange. |
| 12th December 2006 Bikepacker | Thanks for the nice comments! - From: Guerilla Warfare - Bikepacker Style! Just a big THANKS to everyone who's sending in the kind comments about my memorablog on the 2001 England to Singapore bike trip. A few answers to your questions: Commie Beer: Tastes Good - Gives you a Hangover from hell, though. Publish it: Tried, but the publishers want you to do it for charity or cycle with one leg. Toby has written a book though, and I hope to include it on a new website I'm setting up. Where are we now: For you Jackie - it's a secret until the end of the trip. One thing though - we have totally changed since the trip and are doing very different and exciting things... I wish you all a Happy Christmas - it is your gift to me that I bring a smile to your faces through this journal. Have fun and enjoy the rest... ANDY GANNER (Bikepacker) |

| 7th December 2006 Cory | Ah yes, the steps - From: Bike-Unfriendly Wuhan Hi, sounds like a great adventure you are on. I traveled along the Yangtze last year. I remember those darn steps, stairs seem to be everywhere in the Yangtze cities/towns... and with a bicycle, hats off to you. Oh yes, I also remember the toilets, wish I could forget! |
| 7th December 2006 Jackie | can't look - From: Bike-Unfriendly Wuhan Am getting vertigo looking at those photo's. See thats where i fall down I would have let the bike fall into the river and taken a taxi to the airport. |
| 5th December 2006 Andreas | - From: "Weapons of Mass Destruction" - We found them! Really fun to read:) |

| 3rd December 2006 John and Sylvia | PC Jokes - From: "Is it becuz I is Black"? (fans of Ali.G will get it) To Steven: I have done that and they laugh and tell you one back. PC is laughable all over the world! Any sort of extreme sets itself up to be ridiculed. That's why Ali G has a TV program - much as I don't like it. |
| 2nd December 2006 Jackie | DIDN'T REALISE THAT - From: Secret Policeman Say - "It's for your own Protection"! did not realise that you were doing this from memory and there's me awake at night worrying if you are ok LOL does not distract from it am loving it. |
| 1st December 2006 Steven | Expect more from a world traveler like yourself - From: "Is it becuz I is Black"? (fans of Ali.G will get it) Try making an insensitive joke like that the next time you are in South Africa or maybe telling an Arab joke to a local in Syria, or a Chinese joke to a cab driver in Beijing….then let me know what types of reactions you get. |
| 30th November 2006 Ruzanna | A little advice on food - From: Communism at Work. "Just Dig it"! It is medically proved that the less eggs are cooked, than easer they are digested. So think a bit of your stomach and don't eat boiled eggs. http://www.guidearoundtheworld.com/articles/food.htm |
| 30th November 2006 Jackie | agree - From: "Is it becuz I is Black"? (fans of Ali.G will get it) I am in total agreement. i see totally where you were coming from with that title. Some people need to lighten up a little. |
| 30th November 2006 jackie | Just love these - From: Communism at Work. "Just Dig it"! I am really enjoying these. Be very careful if you are ill not to push yourself too far. If it is a virus you can end up with M.E. Listen to your body. Mind you I feel shattered just reading these. LOL |
| 29th November 2006 christina | good - From: Into Romania i've been to oradea before and that is how i see it too. really cool u see i was born in romania too. |
| 29th November 2006 Bikepacker | Political Correctness - the Bane of Western society! - From: "Is it becuz I is Black"? (fans of Ali.G will get it) Never have I had more personal emails than about the title of my last blog - "Is it becuz I is Black". It seems the disease of political correctness has infiltrated and warped western society to such a degree that we are afraid to smile in fear of offending someone somewhere. Even the word 'Political Correctness' has become a victim of its own being. From next year it's either 'Inclusive' or 'Non-inclusive', as the word 'PC' may offend those not of a political slant. So, whoever has never laughed at a joke about race, sex, or religion please make themselves know - and we shall see a very shallow and boring person. Certainly no-one that I'd like to spend a year travelling with! |
| 28th November 2006 Edmund | Stupid title - From: "Is it becuz I is Black"? (fans of Ali.G will get it) Jokes about race, sex and religion never make for a good laugh. PERIOD |
| 28th November 2006 Marty | Great blog! - From: "Is it becuz I is Black"? (fans of Ali.G will get it) I've read all of your blogs and love them. Hurry up so I can read some more. Get well, keep up your spirit, we're all right behind you in cycberspace. |
| 27th November 2006 thor | Whaa - From: "Is it becuz I is Black"? (fans of Ali.G will get it) If the title offends you don't read the blog...seriously. |
| 27th November 2006 jackie | this is hoping - From: "Is it becuz I is Black"? (fans of Ali.G will get it) This is hoping that you are feeling better. Following your posts love them. |
| 27th November 2006 Bikepacker | Ironic Pop-culture Dude... - From: "Is it becuz I is Black"? (fans of Ali.G will get it) If you are offended by such an innocuous comment based on Mr Cohens character, Ali.G, then I suggest you check out the 'Borat' movie to see where it comes from..... No 'Irony by-passes' on my travels Dude! And no offence caused! |
| 27th November 2006 Nic | Dude, seriously uncool title. - From: "Is it becuz I is Black"? (fans of Ali.G will get it) Casually offensive and no applicable story to level it out... made me grimace, brother. Your travels are great, but you should kill that kind of stuff. |
| 24th November 2006 Dal and Ab | Keep on trucking - From: Peoples Army Say - "No, you not cycle on our Motorway"! We're truly amazed by your journey. At the beginning you were taking a similar route to us - though because we were using trains I think we overtook you somewhere around Novosibirsk. The distances seemed huge to us and I still can't believe you've managed to cycle them. We really noticed the air quality in China too, and we didn't have to try exercising in it! Keep it up, we regularly check your blog to see how you are going. Dal and Ab |
| 16th November 2006 Abe in Phoenix, AZ | Fantastic Journey! - From: BEIJING BLAST! - we gain two new follwers to the Great Cause. Congratulations on your Journey. Shows what the human body is capable of. I hope your ankles and knees recover. I have been following your trip since late September--truly amazing, cheers! ;-) |
| 9th November 2006 contreras_alejandro | So close to the border - From: Midnight Executions? Then, at the end of 8,185 miles - reflections... Thanks for your postings. I had noticed them on Travelblog front page and finally decided to subscribe. You had an amazing adventure. Driving (or cycling in your case) around a country (or continent in your case!) is the best way to know it. Just a comment: I am surprised by how close is Beijing to the Mongolian border. If my math is correct, from your postings I added 275 miles from the border to the Great Wall, and 176 more to Beijing. Thats like 450 miles. I thought it was more... Thanks for the postings, anyway. cheers |
| 4th November 2006 Mark | - From: Braving Sandstorms in Inner Mongolia Guys, I have become utterly addicted to your blog. Can't wait to see how it all turns out. |

As part of my Master's Thesis, I am researching the concept of travelblogging and moblogging in the hopes of constructing a unique service geared toward the moblogger/travelblogger's distinct community. I've constructed an online survey that should only take about 2 minutes to complete. Any input that you could provide would be of great help! You can take the survey at the following address: www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=15302763533 Thanks so much for your help! Blog on! Sam P.S. | 27th October 2006 larry lagarde | I thought the American West was desolate - From: Frozen Turds in the Gobi.... I rode from Yellowstone National Park to the Grand Canyon on a solo, unassisted bike trip. There were times when the scenery was desolate and brown but your photos of Mongolia look like photos from the Mars lander. It sounds like an incredible journey you're making. When you're done, I'd love to publish some tips from you for the benefit of all the long distance riders and bike tour dreamers that visit my site. | 18th October 2006 Rory | Itchy feet - From: Arrival in Ulaan Baatar Bloody hell is this nostalgic, back at a desk, winter drawing on, money in the bank, forget buying a house, I could so bugger off and do the other half of the planet. Anybody want to come? I've given up the fags and beer for breakfast (honest). |
| 11th October 2006 PeteD | - From: After 7000 miles cycling - we reach the very end of Europe! Your blogs have all been so fascinating and inspiring. cheers |
| 5th October 2006 Bikepacker | Reply to "Freezing" - From: Baikal's Mysterious Waters At no time did we share a tent - it didn't get cold enough for "Shared bodily warmth". It was minus 8 in the tent, that's where the thermometer was. It actually got much colder than -8... keep reading the memorablog. ANDY |
| 5th October 2006 anonymous | freezing - From: Baikal's Mysterious Waters When it was minus 8, did you still sleep in separate tents to decided to cuddle up to keep warm? How cold was it inside the tent? |

| 23rd September 2006 Shawne & Jodie | Wow! - From: Dangerous Times in the Siberian Wilderness That is a crazy story about the gay truck driver! We are starting our cross-country bicycle trip tomorrow. We are taking the Southern Tier route from San Diego to the Florida Keys. At around 3600 miles.... it may seem like a short tour to you guys! Good luck in your travels, we will keep you in mind. |
| 22nd September 2006 Good Sue | Please beat the cold - From: Dangerous Times in the Siberian Wilderness So I'm your grandmother's age, I'm sitting in China reading your blog and that photo of you in the tent in heavy frost caught me. I started worrying about you. But then I read on and realized you really are sane and will enjoy the adventure and not be crazy. Good luck and God Bless. |
| 18th September 2006 Mark | Old Travel Blog? - From: Shock, Horror, and Sadness about the WTC attacks Hi, I've been enjoying your blog for awhile now. But I had no idea it was from 2001 until you made the last post. I guess you are posting an older journal. Either way, please keep it up - I love to read about your adventures. |

| 2nd September 2006 grantcorp | Time travel? - From: OMSK - city of Hardcore Partying! Hi man, I wonder if there is a particular reason why you choose not to date the journal entries by when they took place? I do it all the time and I think it helps put things in perspective. Anyway, keep up the good work! |
| 1st September 2006 Bikepacker | It's as good as you make it... - From: The Marijuana Fields of Siberia In places as vast and as diverse as Russia, I don't think you can measure a situation as good or bad. There are areas I woundn't visit such as the Caucasus region, and I'd be a bit cautios in Moscow. But, who's going to bother a guy on a bike who hasn't showered for a few days? |
| 31st August 2006 same guy as yesterday | situation - From: The Marijuana Fields of Siberia what do you think - is the situation same/worse/better today for a traveller like you in Russia? |
| 30th August 2006 Bikepacker | It's a Memorablog... - From: OMSK - city of Hardcore Partying! Sorry to confuse you... I'm writing 5 year-old stuff, it's called a Memorablog. There just wasn't blogs in 2001, and people have been asking me constantly to write up my journal, and well, I reckon this is the best way? It's a bit bizarre at times - last month I was writing about a bike trip in Ukraine whilst on an actual bike trip in theUS! ANDY |
| 29th August 2006 cool stuff | Omsk rocks - From: OMSK - city of Hardcore Partying! Sorry I don't get it really - are you on the road then or are you just writing of 5 years old stuff? Besides the white Ladas that followed you (actually a Volga and a Moskvitsch) do you feel (felt?) safe there? |

| 12th August 2006 Rory | Details details - From: STALINGRAD! Revisited - the group splits... Andy, I don't remember taking a train from Volgograd. I do remember the (pre planned) boat trip up the Volga river though, which was excellent by the way (ruined only by the thought of you riding all alone on those dusty hostile roads ;-) Excellent Blog. Keep it up. |
| 7th August 2006 The Nomad | Great trip! - From: STALINGRAD! Revisited - the group splits... Hey mate. Looks like you guys are having a great trip. I'm sure you'll have all sorts of cool adventures riding that far. Take note that someone I know tried a similar trip and had a real hard slog through the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, the hardest part of the trip he reckons. Good luck and it appears that you and I share the same travel sponser. I'll be following your trip with interest. CAMO |
