March 1: Escape from Luanda, Volume 10 Yet another Luanda airport adventure. On our last venture on South African Air, we had actually just walked up to the counter to check in, so imagine our dismay when we arrived at the airport only to be greeted by the line from hell! Just a few minutes after settling into the end of the line, we were approached by a well dressed gentleman who we mistook for one of our company’s expeditors and who offered to take us to the front of the line. After the long walk, dragging our load of suitcases, we were requested to provide something for the “chief”. The light bulbs went on, we said we weren’t going to pay, and the fellow just directed us back to the end of the line. Shortly ... read more

27 Nov - Another escape from Luanda. Some arguments over carry on luggage (Steve believes in trying to carry on everything but the kitchen sink and we were forced to consolidate down to one bag each) and the flight was an hour and a half late, but otherwise it went smoothly. We discovered that one of our suitcases had been checked through to Kigali (in spite of telling the agent we wanted all our bags to go to Jo’burg) and decided to deal with it the next day. Walt picked us up at the airport, we stopped for some take out roasted chicken on the way to the guest house, and we collapsed. 28 Nov - Johannesburg. Walt’s guest house is on a lake with a 1.5 mile loop around it, which made for some nice ... read more

Trip Report: Namibia/Botswana September 2007 Day 1: Luanda-Windhoek. A smooth flight out of Luanda. We were mistakenly informed to arrive at the airport at 10:30, only to find out that check-in didn’t open until noon! However, this meant that we were first in line. After only one person successfully cut in front of us (in spite of our best efforts to maintain position), we were second to check in. The flight was only about 2/3 full, and left and arrived on time. We were picked up at the Windhoek airport by our rental car company (Africar) who drove us to our hotel and made arrangements to pick us up the next morning to pick up our rental 4X4. The hotel (Klein Windhoek Guest House) was in a tony suburb of Windhoek and was only about 5 ... read more

What an adventure! 33 days, 4 continents, 9 countries, 19 flight legs… Whew, we made it. Sounds like "The Amazing Race"! The voyage got off to an inauspicious start right from the get go. Exiting a West African country is never a picnic and is typically good for some stories in itself. We arrived at the airport over 3 hours in advance of the flight time (Flight 1: Luanda - Lisbon) and then waited in line for over an hour just to get to the room where you check in where we got to watch the Portuguese/Angolan fine art of line cutting at its best. Another 30 minutes in a second line and we were finally checked in. Luckily passport control and security had no line - everyone was still in the first line. Steve's years ... read more

It's hard to believe we've been here almost 3 months and are on the cusp of our first big vacation! Time has flown by very fast, which I suppose is a direct result of how busy we've been. So I figured it was a good time to send out an update and tell some stories of our exploits to date. We finally moved into our house on October 28 after 7 weeks in a temporary guest house. It's funny as we meet people here, how many of them also stayed in that place! It's like it's a rite of passage here. It was perfectly adequate but not having a yard was getting old with Ozzy, the "devil dog". Also, there was a professional "party house" (really a patio) across the street which hosted events, usually with ... read more
