Hey everyone, Jon here reporting on our third and final farm. As a few of you already know, we decided to cut short our plan to stay WWOOFing until May. Actually at this point we have just returned to the United States, but before ending our travel blog I wanted to report on our last farm in Southern Sicily. Our third farm was located in the city of Paterno, a few miles west of the major Sicilian city of Catania we mentioned in previous blog entries. Unlike our previous Sicilian farm, Paterno is situated at the base of Mt. Etna, thus nowhere near as cold as the second farm. We also had a gorgeous view of the volcano from the farm, which we'll show in a final blog post with pictures. The farm was owned and ... read more

Bagolara After wonderful Carnevale, we left our hotel in Catania to make our way back up the east coast to our second farm.  We had to get off the main north/south train line at a coastal town to catch a smaller local train that would take us inland and up to the small village of Santa Venera where the farm was located.  As we pulled up to a stop with no signs what-so-ever we were lucky that the train conductor came back and told us we had arrived.  We shlepped our heavy bags off the train and were left in silence as the train pulled away.  All we had was an address for the farm, and we knew it was somewhat close to the train station, so we started looking for street signs.  We were interrupted ... read more

After leaving Pirapora, under the advise of Lauren and Gianni/Johnny, we decided to head to Acireale to celebrate Carnevale. Apparently this town has the most famous and elaborate celebration of Carnevale in all of Sicily, which we eventually experienced first hand. We initially had plans to stay only Friday night to experience the celebrations on Saturday and head to the next farm that evening, however after taking one step into Hotel Santa Canterina all plans changed as we started brainstorming ways to stay the entire weekend. The town of Acireale is adorable with small shop fronts, quaint piazzas with old churches, and bustling city streets...a combination of beauty and civilization Jon and myself had both come to miss. While the town was beautiful, the real motivator for the extended weekend trip was the Hotel Santa Canterina. ... read more

Time is certainly flying by!  Mary and I are now down at our second farm in Sicily, but before we discuss that I wanted to describe our last few weeks at our first farm in Calabria.  As you may have seen our last blog update was more pictures from Pirapora (the name of their farm), the view never got old!  Now to continue from Marys last blog entry: Our fellow WWOOFers Sean and Frances left 2 days after our beach weekend to head down to Sicily.  Mary and I were now the only two WWOOFers for the next 3 weeks.  We definitely lucked out with the weather that first week, because over the next few weeks we dealt with the Calabrian winter- lots of wind and rain.  However they did have plenty of activities for us ... read more

Pirapora So we finally arrived at the first farm! It's located in a small town called Zambrone in Calabria, a region in southern Italy.  When Jon and I walked up to the house we could see the most spectacular view of the sun setting over the Mediterranean Sea.  Its amazing!! A little background on the farm: it's family owned by Giovanni "Johnny" and Franco who inherited the land from their parents. Johnny is married to Lauren who is English, they have 2 children, Luca age 5 and Sophia age 3.  Franco is married to Rosey who is Brazilian and they have 2 children as well, Michal and Sarah, both somewhere between the ages of 14-16. Together they operate a B & B and restaurant in the summer, which is 80% sustained from the farm.  They have ... read more

I wasn't sure that Jon was doing our self-taught Italian cooking justice, so I have to go into all the details of the amazing food that we cooked in our lovely little apartment, with the most wonderful ingredients from the local market.  And we don't want to forget how we prepared our 2 favorite dishes, so this will suffice as a small recipe collection! While we were in Rome we had access to an amazing array of fresh fruits and vegetables from the local market up the street from our apartment, and there was one vegetable in particular that we hadn't had much experience with, yet found an abundance of at each farmers stand. Artichokes! Our only experience with artichokes is pretty recent, when my best friend Des, also our old roommate :) prepared steamed ... read more

Rome After a fantastic trip to Ireland it was finally time to make our way to Rome.  We spent 2 more days in Dublin before taking a Ryanair flight direct to the Italian capital.  Actually while in Dublin taking a bus back from the rental car office, we ran into an Irish friend of ours, Sarah, who worked at James Hobans but was back in Ireland now!  It is a small world indeed! Before we left Ireland, we had found an excellent website called 'Air B n B' in which people post their apartments that they are willing to rent out to anyone for either a few days to weeks/months.  Mary and I liked staying in hostels since they had communal kitchens and we could prepare our own food (cutting down on food costs), but did ... read more

Belfast     Belfast! We had the most amazing time staying with my cousin Andrea, her husband Connor, and their very adorable son Finn. I had visited them during my last trip to Ireland, but since they have moved to a new house and Finn is now 3 years old, completely full of energy, and SO cute! We started on our journey to Belfast from Kilkenny, a route that Jon claimed was fool proof...I should have known by now that this was a clear indication that we would eventually find ourselves very lost.  A common trend through this trip, we find ourselves deep in silly conversation so much so that we miss all signage pointing us to our destination, ending up in very small and very obscure Irish village, often times very hungry and very in need ... read more
