MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY !!! We took our first Chinese overnight train to Pingyao – one of the best preserved ancient cities in China. So far we only could see some modern city developments and we really wanted to see some authentic places. Hard sleeper was really good and comfy (150Y/15£ each). Could even say that it was of better standard than the Russian Platzkart that we liked so much. We arranged to stay in Harmony Guesthouse - Courtyard hotel with a lot of charm and great interior. They also provided pick up for free so we did not have to think about that when we got there early in the morning. Upgrade to a double en-suite room was a nice gift as well (100Y/10£ per room). We really got to like ... read more

Of course we had to go and visit it when in Beijing. We even thought of doing it when in Datong but the part of Great Wall over there is not apparently very impressive. The initial plan was to go twice to different parts of the wall to have a better feel of the place. One of the seven ancient wonders of the world, right? The choice of places where you can visit Great Wall of China is quite big and it could be a little bit confusing what to do. Tours usually get to go to the Badaling section of the Wall and they even take you to the Ming Tombs on the way so kind of understand the package deal people take. So where is the catch? We thought that everybody would try to ... read more

We finally made it to Beijing – yeah ;-). Seemed like an end of one part of our trip as we thought that would have been the last stop on the Trans-Mongolian route. Plans have changed along the way but non the less we were excited about the capital. It is such a massive city and you can see how it stretches for miles when you arrive on the train. Our first ride in the Hard Seater section (lowest class) was actually quite nice. Not too crowded, clean and cosy - not sure why they call it that way. We were meeting Anna, our CS hostess in the evening so we had few hours to kill. Anna lives in Wudaokou – University area that is full with students, international teachers, bars and clubs. It was so ... read more

Datong - Ancient Land of Buddhism The border crossing from Mongolia was in fact more interesting than the Russian-Chinese one. We had a lot of time and we could choose whichever option we liked. Obviously the most convenient way was to take the last leg of the Trans-Mongolian and go directly to Beijing but somehow we changed our mind after few weeks in UB. Maybe because there was almost nobody doing that or just maybe because we have heard about some nice places to visit in Inner Mongolia or Northern China. I should probably mention the enormous price difference between the train to the border and the Trans-Mongolian. I could say it is the advantage of this option that every backpacker finds very appealing ;-) The second decision was to go to Hohhot but after reading ... read more

As we already finished our journey on the Trans-Mongolian railway I thought we could give it a go and summarize our feelings and experiences of it. We read a lot of blogs, articles, websites etc about the journey but I guess everybody is different and the perception of this particular train ride remains somehow very subjective. Kupe (2nd class) vs Platzkart (3rd class): We have never had an opportunity to try the 1st class but I guess it would not impress us anymore than 2nd class. After what we read about the Platzkart our intention was to go with 2nd class all the way. Only after we tried Ukrainian 3rd class we got really curious if the Russian one looked the same. We actually felt that the 3rd class conditions exceeded our expectations and it was ... read more

We spent more than we had to in UB due to my silly eye infection caused by cold wind presumably. But one thing we had to do for sure when in town was a visit to a ger camp. There is plenty of excursions available to choose from and you can be confused about what to do and where to go. If not the cold weather we would have probably gone to many more places actually. Unfortunately the temperatures went way below the typical level for November and we had no suitable clothing for Gobi or Northern region trips. We could visit nearby Terelj National Park though, situated only 80km from UB. We checked few agencies including our guesthouse and we were surprised to see that even winter season pricing was not that low ;-( 40$ ... read more

We arrived in UB quite early in the morning and we went straight to the Khongor Guest-house we picked out of the LP before (5$/night/person dorm). Something was not all right with the map as it happened to be much further than we initially thought it would be, but we made it. We had couple of hours of sleep and we went out with Lukasz – Polish guy we met in the lounge of the guest-house. We went to see the Sukhbaatar Square (main spot of the city) and then we headed to the hill just next to the Gandan Khiid Monastery. Lukasz told us there is a view of the whole city from that point so we were really up for it. There happened to be some shamanistic pile of rocks, that you are supposed ... read more

Next morning we headed to the bus stop and we found a group of people already waiting for the same minibus. We looked at each other and decide to wait anyway. We did not like the idea of waiting for the next one for 3h in freezing weather. The driver allowed us in but later on started to ask something about the phone. Good we had a Russian speaking Cyril with us but we still had no idea what he was on about. Apparently this bus is for bookings only so we were asked to leave very quickly. Shame that no one at Nikita's mentioned it to us. The driver obviously felt bed or just wanted more earnings, as he asked people to squeeze in and we managed to get place. Cyril was not very happy ... read more

So, we travelled another 45h to get to Irkutsk and we happened to take exactly the same train as Cyril - the guy we met in Novosibirsk. What are the odds??? Train ride was fun – this time in the 3rd class - and we really enjoyed it. First we met some Ukrainian guys (60 of them all together) who were going to Irkutsk for 6 months work contract. Why travel so far and leave the families behind?? Three times higher salary than in Ukraine – that is why ;-( We also came across drunken army boys that invited Tomek to drink vodka, Russian whiskey (cheap brandy) and champagne with them and also fed him with some chicken kebabs hahhah They had loads of fun together and they also gave Tomek some gifts like a Russian ... read more

We arrived in Novosibirsk late in the evening and we went to our hostel that we booked prior to leaving Moscow. The size of the city we could observe from the train really surprised us. How on earth such a big city can exist in the middle of nowhere? We became very curious of what is the main industry of this place for it to be so big. We could not find anybody from CS in this town and there were only 3 hostels available so we did not have to think long. Cheapest would do. We had a plan to drop our bags and go back to the city centre to have some dinner. In the hostel we met a nice French guy – Cyril - and we were asked by the administrator if we ... read more
