South America » Colombia » Cartagena January 28th 2013

We left Capurgana with sinking hearts as we really got to love this place. It was time to move on however and we were about to replace that little Caribbean village with one of the biggest colonial gems of the whole Latin America - Cartagena. Not too bad at all so we were really excited. The way to Cartagena from Turbo is very tiring and it takes a long time (see details at the end). However, it takes you through the beautiful coastal landscape filled with Chiquita banana plantations and is dotted with little villages so it is not boring. When we finally arrived in Cartagena we were hit by the massive tourism infrastructure probably for the first time during our stay in this country. We had no other choice but to take a taxi to ... read more

Everybody looks for information to establish some kind of expectations. It is true with regards to finances, schools, jobs and life in general as well as travels. We read stories, buy guidebooks and gather information to know what to expect when we get to a place. However, only some of those expectations can be realistic. Some are too high and then we are disappointed and then some are too low and we can be positively surprised. And there are those situations that no matter what you expect they scare the shit out of you. This is exactly what happened on the way to Capurgana. Capurgana is one of those places which is not very straightforward to get to unless you have loads of money to fly there. If you follow our blog you know that we ... read more

South America » Colombia » Quindío » Salento January 14th 2013

from Popayan to Salento and the Cocora Valley It only had taken around 4h to get to Popayan from San Agustin but when we finished we felt it was not enough. The views on the way simply astounded us as we could not stop looking through the window of our small bus. The valley, the waterfalls and lush green jungle was what we exactly imagined about Colombia. We could not stop wondering where all the drug plantations and factories were as this place seemed ideal for that purpuse. We made our way straight to the highly recommended TrailHostel and got a double room as a treat. It was said so many times that sex comes pricey when traveling on a budget hahaha and it is true. There are places whish are considered skip-able by travelers, Bogota being one of them. Whenever we are in such situation that we have to choose if we should stay or not, we simply cannot decide. On one hand we know it is not going to blow our minds, on the other however, we feel that maybe we can find something special over there. This way we have some regrettable choices of places on our list (Boracay, Bali and even Gillis) but curiosity somehow always wins. We had to go through Bogota anyway, as there was no other way to get out of the Amazon but we did not have to stay, of course. And of course we did anyway. When we landed in Bogota, people started to put layers on their very light clothing (Leticia is ... read more

South America » Colombia » Leticia » Rio Yavari, Amazon January 6th 2013

We arrived to the place of 3 frontiers before lunch time and were dropped at the bank of the Amazon on the Peruvian side, we think. It was hard to tell because there was a lot going on around us and to get anywhere we had to take a water taxi anyway. We negotiated a price with a boatmen and he took us first to the immigration office so that we could be stamped out of Peru. As it happens water is too low for the barca to go there so you have to really deal with the extra cost. It was not much anyway and the guy waited for us to take us to Leticia, port of entry to Colombia…ah, finally. People say it is not pretty but we found it rather nice. The streets ... read more

South America » Peru » Amazonas December 26th 2012

We felt very excited to be out of the gringo-land when we landed in Terapoto, little town and the closest airport for starting the Amazon River experience. Yes, we could have flown directly to Iquitos but what is the fun in that? We wanted to spend a few fine and quiet days on a barca (cargo/passenger boat) to get to our final destination, Colombia. The moment we exited the plane, humid and hot air hit us and it felt sooo good. No more cold for us from now on, just tropics. We became such wusses when it comes to cold weather. Of course whenever you feel that it is just perfect something must disturb it just to remind you that you are not that lucky. Otherwise life on the road would be too easy and that ... read more

Please note: we have been unlucky enough to lose 95% of our MP photos due to some horrific SD card error or something. We were only able to recover some but not the greatest ones. Let’s just say this place was less than lucky for us. We left Bolivia with heavy hearts as we really got to love this country. The journey through the border was less than easy and we reached Arequipa with no problems around 8 pm. There are a lot of stories about this particular part of the country, saying that Puno-Arequipa road is the most dangerous in Peru. We thought that our driver was really careful when taking on these sharp turns and besides the mountain drops were not even that high. Once you have taken a bus in Bolivia you know ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Lake Titicaca December 11th 2012

We were not incredibly excited about visiting Copacabana but we had to pass through this highly touristy place to get to the amazing Isla del Sol. We have to admit, we underestimated this little town, although we were lucky to be in the right place at the right time. We arrived in the afternoon and it was already too late for a boat to the island. We could not even be bothered with looking for accommodation and we took a room in a very reasonably priced Hotel Colonial just because it was next to the bus stop (100B/15$ with breakfast). We took a stroll around the main road filled with restaurants, bars and souvenir stalls and we were not impressed. We don’t quite understand how people can stay there for a week but hey, it is ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department December 7th 2012

From Cochabamba to La Paz Let’s admit it. There are loads of stories going around travelers’ world with regards to all the danger waiting for you in South America. Some of the things really happened and some stories were ‘improved’ when passed from traveler to traveler - just like any other good gossip. Safety on night buses might be just one of those things. People are scared to take them, it is a fact and when you hear all these ‘dos and don’ts’ you create an image of danger in your mind immediately. We had already taken night buses in Brazil and Paraguay and they were just fine. I guess it is different in Bolivia because of the rough terrain and road conditions so in Uyuni we faced a tough decision. We contemplated if we should ... read more

The landscape started to change a little bit on a way to Tupiza. The soil started to look a little bit reddish and different vegetation appeared out of nowhere. Tupiza region is said to look like an American wild-wild west, however we cannot judge as this part of the world is still ahead of us to discover. We stopped only once on a way for some ‘almuerzo’ and toilet and even though there was a pretty decent restaurant with FREE banos, majority of locals from our bus went straight to the hard shoulder and just did their business. What the hell? Even woman, who are usually shy of such situations, would lift up their vast, multi-layered skirts and just squat on the ground. Well, maybe in our society it is called ‘private’ business but definitely not ... read more
