The devil is not so black as he is painted Journey to Moscow was again very comfy and pleasurable on the 3rd class overnight train. We began to think that maybe we should not take the Kupe (2nd class) on the onward train to Novosibirsk as we felt quite good about the platzkart. We had some troubles finding the ATM to take some money out at the station and we missed the city train that Masha (our CS hosts) told us to take. We were lucky to get some attention and help from an English speaking woman and we were on our way to the suburbs in no time. The train station we needed in order to buy the next tickets was on the opposite side of the city so we decided first to head ... read more

Everything in Kiev is Grand Our start in Kiev wasn’t the best we could hope for. We did not get the overnight express we counted on and we had to settle down for a different, less 'luxurious' one. Later on we learnt that train number can tell a lot. Any small number, preferably with double zero in front is the best. The one we wanted was 092N so not bad at all and we came to Kiev on the 134 one. It was not bad at all as for 3rd class, we slept through out the night with no problems at all. The only negative point about this train was that it arrived in the afternoon and we had to hang around until we were able to head to our Couch Surfing place for the next ... read more

The Jewish restaurant wasn’t far at all but it was hidden in the maze of small streets around Stary Rynok. It is located very close to the Arsenal building however you cannot reach it from there. We saw people passing by and taking photos of it but we were not sure if they had known about this place from somewhere and came to see it or just happened to pass by. We have not found information about this place in any of the guides we read, nor we have heard about it from the Polish guys we met (they had an advantage when it comes to sights and local places as their friend has been living in Lviv for 6 years now). Maybe just local people know about it?? Never the less, the exterior of the ... read more

We crossed the border in Medyka – on the main road from Przemysl to Lviv. There is a lot of information available on the crossing process and timing but it really depends on the day and hour. We have heard stories that some people were stranded for more than 20h only because they refused to pay 'a little benefit to the guard' . Unfortunately this ways have not changed since Soviet Time. Initially we were supposed to drive with our parents to Lviv but after reading about these hours of ques we decided to take a direct bus (5 GBP each) as this way crossing is smooth and short. Planned journey time was 3h we made it in 4h so not that bad at all. Another way is to take an Intercity train (15-20GBP each) as ... read more

We thought about it for years, we read about places we wanted to visit and see for months and we had our travel gear ready for many days before the 'The Day'. Despite all of that we never felt it was time to go.....What if we didn't close some things or didn't think of something? It does not matter now anyway;-) Goodbyes were really hard. Saying 'See you in a year or more' to our friends and colleagues at work was nerve racking. There was a lot of tears ( at least from my side) even though we knew there are amazing days to come. I can see now why people are doing it when at Uni. Nothing to be attached to, no career left behind, no house to be rent to someone and no ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik June 10th 2011

Imagine 4 days in a beautiful hotel on the coast, crystal clear blue water, sunshine and a surroundings of a truly historic place dated from 7th century.....Sounds like an ideal escape place to wander around, taste gorgeous food and relax..... Yes it does;-) .....And it would have been if not the fact that these 4 days I spent in Dubrovnik (and Cavtat) were just a business trip for a distribution conference and therefore this isn't really a true travel journal of Myself and Tomek exploring Dalmatian coast ;-( Nevertheless, I decided to share some photos of this astonishing, postcard perfect place and keep a memory of it ;-) We both have been to Croatia before but separately. I visited Istria region together with my family where we explored Medulin and Pula with the amazingly preserved Roman ... read more

long awaited meeting with this city We said goodbye to Australia but not for ever - we already know we will be back one day;-) It was amazing trip but here came the time to experience something different to OZ and different to other Asian encounters we had had in the past. So many people who travel a lot mention Singapore as a must visit place.... so many times we have heard from our friends and colleagues: "have you been to Singapore? No? Then you definitely must go"; " I could live in Singapore easily"; "It is such a different place that it feels like you are not in Asia" etc etc... So when the Australia came up as a plan we knew immediately that we wanted to fly through Singapore and stay for few ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Atherton Tablelands May 23rd 2011

the wet tropics combined with the dry outback charm The drive from The Daintree National Park to the Atherton area was the longest we did in Queensland. No complaints however as it is a really scenic road with the landscape changing a lot when compared to the coastal tropics. Suddenly the earth starts to look red, trees are no longer tropical palms and you see loads and loads of cattle grazing and kangaroos crossing your path ;-) The Tablelands are covered with lush green patches and they are the site of the recent volcano activity in Australia. Some of the craters and lakes are 'only 10,000' years old so pretty recent ;-). We took the road 44 linking to 81 straight to Atherton town when we were making our base camp for the 2 nights. ... read more

Where the rainforest meets the reef The day after our reef trip we headed to the motor home rental centre to pick up the campervan. We got beautiful, barely used 2 berth car with built-in shower, toilet, cooker, fridge but most importantly AC and additional bonus of a flat screen TV ;-) We were so excited to finally start the trip the way we like it - no organised stuff but 'US', the road and going wherever we want at our own pace. No more hotels and restaurants for a week - just campsites and BBQ ;-) To be honest we were so impressed by the campsites in Queensland, so great place to camp ;-) There is a lot to choose from - private ones, council-run ones and the ones in the national parks for just ... read more

Our first taste of the Wet Tropics of Queensland We took a 2,5h flight from Brisbane to Cairns and this is when it hit us .... wow this place is huge!!! On the map this route is just a tiny bit of Australia and yet the distance between these two towns is like from London to Krakow in Poland!!! The minute we exited the plane we knew we were in a different and more tropical climate- it was hot and humid. The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area lies between Townsville and Cooktown on the north-east coast of Queensland and covers an area of 894k hectares. This is where the rainforest meets the ocean and this is the place we read about so much that it has built this incredible excitment in us to see it;-). We ... read more
