| 28th September 2005 Beamish | Dear Mon - From: Blogging off I did get them, thank you very much. Put an extra note on the blog at the time to say so, but only small so easily missable. I'm scribbling away French-style. I've not heard from my brother in ages either! Must get in touch with the boy... |
| 27th September 2005 Mon | - From: Blogging off Heya - glad you are back - and sorry to take a while catching up with reading this - did you get the intermarche things? Actually - I was spurred to write by the message from crowbar - not heard from him for ages - will you send him my love - and excuse me for sidelining your blog in the process? love, Mon |

| 2nd September 2005 Beamish | - From: Guide to making friends with people from foreign countries I have them! Thank you very much. |
| 2nd September 2005 Beamish | - From: Finally ill I'm still deciphering your email, bro. All the "i"s got changed to "#3ae"s. Are you getting a new camera or relying on borrowing your friends' photos? Such a dilemma as you really want to take your own pictures but you know that if you lost a second camera you'd be devastated. I'm going to tackle my insurance claim tomorrow. Can't wait. But now you're the only one doing exciting things as I'm just playing with Jack and Minnie and waiting for my new job to start (which is a bit exciting, I supposed). Jack thinks it hilarious that you are on holiday "inside a big Turkey". We all went to see the Lion King at the theatre last night. I'm with Jack on this one - it was "more than amazing". |
| 1st September 2005 Ruthie | - From: Finally ill When are you home? Want to arrange a big get together? London or Derby or Preston(tough choice!), look forwards to hearing more about your trip (I admit I have missed a few entries on this thing) See you soon, Ruthie xx |

| 31st August 2005 Sammie | Dubliners - From: Finally ill Dubliners isn't bad- think I had to read some of them for gcse. Infintely preferable to Finnegan's Wake and Proust. Saw Hannah (Davidson, née Craig!)'s wedding photos last night at netball - very exciting. Everyone looking forward to seeing you - safe flight and hasta luego xx |

| 22nd August 2005 Mon | bits - From: Guide to making friends with people from foreign countries They are on their way to London.... |
| 21st August 2005 Dad | barclaycard issues etc - From: Guide to making friends with people from foreign countries Yes, I've checked and the rainforest poster is indeed still in place in your bedroom. Now then, this barclaycard thing. A missive did pop through the letterbox with something about barclaycard on it but by now it could be a) in the pile of papers for transfer to the tip sometime in the next 6 months b) in the bin c) on the compost heap or d) still on the hall floor where it landed but now lost beneath squash kit, stuff brought back from holiday, boots, shoes, maps, Robert's clothes etc etc. Don't worry though - I will find it and deal with it. |
| 19th August 2005 Beamish | - From: Guide to making friends with people from foreign countries Fantastic! Many, many thanks. To have them waiting for me when I get back to England: 23 Warwick Road, London, W5 3XH. Otherwise, place them in the incapable hands of Donald Ian, from whom I´ll extract them at some point in September. Other people, feel free to send presents too. Come on, Dad, what´s happening with the Barclaycard issues? |
| 17th August 2005 Mon | an aside - From: Guide to making friends with people from foreign countries Ok - we are back from the intermarche clutching goodies... where do you want them? Had a great time - slightly quieter than what you are up to - keep it up, love, Mon |
| 12th August 2005 Beamish | - From: Cancel all your non-Galapagos holidays and stock up on sea-sickness pills Woah - calm down, whoever you are. If you´d read my blog fully like a true devotee, you´d have seen I´ve addressed Sammie´s comment in another entry. The Galapagos photos are in a gallery of their own, you should have a link at the top of the page somewhere. Hope you like them :-) |
| 9th August 2005 danny | ... - From: Cancel all your non-Galapagos holidays and stock up on sea-sickness pills for god's sake, the photos?!!! |
| 29th July 2005 Sammie | Photos? - From: Cancel all your non-Galapagos holidays and stock up on sea-sickness pills How do I see the photos? How do I see the photos? |
| 27th July 2005 Maria | - From: Off to hang with the finches The photos are amazing Liz, the sky is brilliant and the colours are so vivid, much better than the grey here in england. Feeling quite jealous again. Also, the story about the crazy german - funny. You see stories about other people can be amusing. Other people are weird (its not just me). xx Ps Death road looks well cool, there was no way you couldn't have done it. |
| 27th July 2005 Lali | bad corn pasty? - From: Off to hang with the finches Probably you tried a cheap empanada...spend a bit more and you wil get the finest empanada ever, start to treat yourself better. I was in Quito 2 months ago and it was "fantastique". The church you don't remember the name is called "Sagrario". I think you need to spend more time in Quito to apreciate the beauty of this unique city, listed as world heritage. |
| 25th July 2005 Beamish | - From: Practically fluent I´ve just bought a book about Darwin, evolution and the islands which should get me nicely informed. I´ll keep my eyes peeled for those salt-water lizards and more generally for mating animals... |
| 25th July 2005 Beamish | Sorry! - From: Practically fluent Oh no! How embarrassing. I spelt his entire name wrongly and put your name instead, Chris. Sorry that I don´t feel I can change it now. Please accept my sincere and public apologies. For the record, Chris is a normal, extremely charming, bloke and not at all like Thomas, who is really odd. |
| 25th July 2005 Dadd | hostal - From: Practically fluent OK - no morr cantumeley or crittississums abowt yur lecksickle inakkurasies - I wull ristricked miselve to felissitayshiuns on yore gramur, stile and witt. Luv, Dud. |
| 25th July 2005 NOT WEIRD CHRIS | Friendship over - From: Practically fluent Hey liz i think you shoudl check your facts. THomas is the name of the weird german kid, if i remember correctly chris is the really charming guy from NY. I hope you can edit these blog things. |
| 25th July 2005 ruthie | - From: Temporary abandonment of the unadulterated pursuit of pleasure please.....do it! |
| 25th July 2005 Sammie | very jealous - From: Practically fluent Watched a documentary on the galapagos islands yesterday. Watch out for salt-water lizards, apparently, and comerants which can't fly and lots of creatures that only mate when the cold water currents come in. Bet they're well randy the rest of the time... xx |
| 25th July 2005 Mon | You're on! - From: I haven't done much, but I have arranged some things Hello again - and you're on! Might have to wait for New Year's Eve's Eve for the cleriac, unuless you can make it up here earlier... have a great time, love, Mon |
| 24th July 2005 Beamish | "Hostal" is Spanish for "hostel" - From: I haven't done much, but I have arranged some things Yeah, thanks Mon, my sentiments exactly. And, what is more, all the signs round here say "hostal" so my father's contribution is just a demonstration of his unworldliness. I'm not standing for this patriarchal bullying anymore (though I have checked all the spellings I was unsure of in this email). I'll have two notebooks, a pack of ten plastic pencils with rubbers (black and neon not the other colours), and a tub of celeriac with mayonnaise, please. Enjoy the holiday... |
| 23rd July 2005 Mon | Spelling and the Intermarche - From: I haven't done much, but I have arranged some things Hi - I have really enjoyed your blog, having been a passive reader of your adventures, but am now fired up to write in defense of bad spelling. As a renowned bad speller who has been persecuted for it since early childhood I would like to support the individuality expressed by a creative approach to spelling - do we really want to be cloned adherants of an outmoded system?? Also, on a separate subject, we are off to the Intermarche in a week or so - should we secure a writing pad for you? Orders taken. Lots of love, Mon |
| 22nd July 2005 Beamish | - From: I haven't done much, but I have arranged some things Lunch is a pork sandwich, hastily scoffed on the street in twenty minutes max. Then back to it. |
| 22nd July 2005 Beamish | - From: I haven't done much, but I have arranged some things I know, it´s been getting a bit ridiculous with the spelling. I might actually start proof-reading. You weren´t the first to point out cemetery, and you´ll notice I´ve actually edited it. One day, when I´m waiting for a plane or something, I´m going to go through the whole thing for however many hours it takes and try and get as many words right as possible. Sorry for being a bad daughter. |
| 22nd July 2005 anonymous | - From: I haven't done much, but I have arranged some things I can go if you like just let me know the address and i'll get there over the weekend. Donegal will always be waiting for your return liz, though i'm sure the similarities are not so strong. x |
| 22nd July 2005 Dad | spelling - From: I haven't done much, but I have arranged some things It's such a huge relief that, after so many instances of "hostal", we at last get "Mr Hostel man". (Fathers are allowed to be pedantic - and patronising to their offspring.) The content and style are brilliant but I must buy you a good dictionary. And I just can't go without saying "it's cemetery". I feel better now. |
| 22nd July 2005 Maria | - From: I haven't done much, but I have arranged some things Ok, Thank you for your efforts. You can tell me when you get back and therefore isolate your boringness. 11-3 at school eh? What about lunch? |
| 21st July 2005 Beamish | - From: Temporary abandonment of the unadulterated pursuit of pleasure Ruth, that is SO funny. I'd have to be pretty drunk to try them though, and that would be the wors time to do it... |
| 21st July 2005 ruthie | - From: Temporary abandonment of the unadulterated pursuit of pleasure hola muchacho grande, mi nombre es liz y puedo tirar a bolas del pong del silbido de bala de mis pedacitos groseros another classic...maybe not to be used near children xx |
| 21st July 2005 ruthie | some spanish for you to try - From: Temporary abandonment of the unadulterated pursuit of pleasure tengo pechos muy grandes y le encuentro muy atractivo, voluntad usted tiene por favor mi Sr. bar man de los bebés. This phrase may come in useful liz, found it on the internet, try it our and let us know the response, loving the journals, keep them coming! ruthie xxxx |
| 20th July 2005 Beamish | - From: Temporary abandonment of the unadulterated pursuit of pleasure There was a writer called Jane Austin, affectionately known as "Calamity Jane". She was a 19th-century Texan author, frontierswoman, and proto-feminist. Unfortunately, I´m not familiar enough with her work to provide reliable quotations. Now, had you wanted Jane Austen, I could have helped you out... But who am I to talk?! I´ve read what I´ve written: didn´t they have dictionaries/teachers at my school!? So it will have to be travelling people. Are stories about people you´re never going to meet boring? OK, well, last night I met a Chris (US) and a Clara (Netherlands) for a drink at 9. I was on the Caipirinas, Steve the cuba libras and Clara the tea (yeah, just normal tea). We went to a bar we expected to be a place for a quiet nightcap but it was more like a small nightclub full of v young Ecuadorians and had a bit of a dance before going home at two. This is one end of a fairly large group of people all at the same language school (not mine). Is this at all interesting? |
| 20th July 2005 Maria | - From: Temporary abandonment of the unadulterated pursuit of pleasure Sounds like you can speak spanish already, if you can understand your hostal guy. I consider myself pretty good at spanish too, managing to survive a weekend in barcalona with only a few spanish words such as vino blanco, vino tinto, cerveza. Its amazing how the heart always gets what it wants. Tell us more about your new friends, nationalities etc pls (are we allowed to use this thing to make requests) or recite some more austin. xx |
| 19th July 2005 alan | - From: Temporary abandonment of the unadulterated pursuit of pleasure just made it thru the journal - good effort! enjoy watching the footie ......and good luck being a mentalist - learning verbs at 7.30 in the moring def qualifies you! |
| 19th July 2005 Beamish | - From: From cold, bleak Uyuni to warm, happening Quito You`re not off the hook yet, Maria, and won`t be till September. Why, look, since you posted that comment I`ve already published another entry. Perhaps you need to get broadband installed at home. Let`s face it, it`s worth it. (Get saving for Thailand while you`re at it, too.) |
| 19th July 2005 Maria | Hello - From: From cold, bleak Uyuni to warm, happening Quito Just thought I'd let you know that I've finally made it to the end of your journal. I know its taken a shockingly long time but been reading it in snatched moments before work and at lunch time. Glad you're doing well, I've been letting out a few chuckles at my desk. No need to be shy, whats's the worst that can happen, someone doesn't want to talk to you? Their loss, losers. xx |
| 19th July 2005 Hels | snort snort - From: From cold, bleak Uyuni to warm, happening Quito have to stop reading this at work as snorting with laughter into my keyboard really isn't going to get me a promotion and lets face it - it really isn't attractive... My mate Nikki is heading your way v soon (email nikki_hancock@hotmail.com) so maybe you will bump into each other.... xxx |
| 18th July 2005 Beamish | - From: Little pre-bus update Mongos, yeah, seemed a real mix of people. Bolivians and traveller types, and it was absolutely crammed. My guidebook says the Quito nightlife is not the best, but we´ll see as this New Town area seems pretty lively so far. I´m glad you´ve sorted your living arrangements. I´m going to have to start thnking about that before too long... |
| 18th July 2005 Beamish | - From: From cold, bleak Uyuni to warm, happening Quito Yeah, I know. 1995. Ages ago. Colin Firth just isn´t what he used to be anymore. Keira Knightley will suck, I´m sure of it, and I guess it´s too late for them to come crawling back to me to play the part... |
| 18th July 2005 Julie | P&P - From: From cold, bleak Uyuni to warm, happening Quito You've made my day with your roleplay Liz. Bringing back such fond memories, i think it's about time i did the 6 hour marathon again. Do you know they are doing a new film. Disgusted i am! With Keira Knightley! I cried with disgust when i saw the trailer in the cinema. Though someone did point out that it's about 10 years since the last remake. Can you believe it? That's a decade! |
| 15th July 2005 Beamish | - From: Another rum do but, yes, beautiful That`s excellent news. Thanks, Andi. |
| 15th July 2005 andi | True - From: Another rum do but, yes, beautiful Your instincts have done you proud, lass. The Sony 40 second Electronic Shock Protection is a notorious guzzler. Oh, and don´t lose sleep over the volume level: cranking it up a notch or two won´t cost you much extra wattage. Now you run along and enjoy yourself... i.e. it's all true. Using ESP will half your battery life, so keep it off. But extra volume doesn't equal extra power, so crank it up! |
| 15th July 2005 Hels | - From: Another rum do but, yes, beautiful Hey honey! - am hoping that I can finally make a posting! so... if you are still in La Paz go to the prison if yuo can - they do tours around it and it is amazing - the prisoner who I went with has now been released but I think other people may do it... its called San Pedro and you have to buy your own room in there f you are a prisoner and they take their families in with them and have shops and jobs and make cocaine inside. Well worth it for the complete weirdness of it xx |
| 11th July 2005 Sammie | - From: Little pre-bus update Feel honoured and loved to get a mention in the main body of your blog! Did you like Mungos or whatever it's called? We went twice and it was totally different each time - once full of gap-yaaah-garys (you know the type - travelling beads, too-tanned-for-their-own-good, on mind-altering drugs etc etc) then 2nd time we went was really local, with samba playing and lots of people who pushed my 'soy inglesa' Spanish well beyond its limits. Anyway, hope you enjoy the salt plains. So funny to think of you in all these places where I was! But so cold - can't imagine that. It was soooo hot when we went to the Salar and with all the reflection off the white, it was almost more than a wee redhead could handle! Stayed with Em Elliot last night who snores like a trooper so am consequently struggling at work this morning. Did I tell you I'm moving in with Em? Quite exciting! And do you know a friend of hers called Bobby...?! |
| 9th July 2005 Beamish | - From: Did it OK, cool. I´ll say, "Taxi man, take me to the square with lots of clubs round it, and make it pronto." Should do the trick. x |
| 9th July 2005 Sammie | - From: Did it No idea what any of the clubs we went to in La Paz were called, sorry hun. Lots of them though. There's a sort of club/bar called mungoes with lots of travelling types which is a cheap taxi ride away, but we went of a square which ahd loads of clubs around it - can't remember what it was called. Sorry! Kirst might know... Glad you enjoyed (and survived) and the bike ride. Didn't they take you back to La Paz afterwards? aren't the hot showers at the end AMAZING?! Must be weird being there when it's cold though xx |
| 8th July 2005 Beamish | - From: Safe La Paz La Paz is massively crazy. I´m so keen on it. If if weren´t for Quito being a lot warmer, I´d probably enrol on a Spanish course here. |
| 8th July 2005 Sammie | - From: Safe La Paz Glad to hear democracy rules your travelling... Enjoy the bike ride :o) Prob safer than getting a tube in London at the moment. Camera sounds cool. Isn't La Paz crazy?! |
| 7th July 2005 Maria | Got the link ta. - From: Journey Started reading it but I'm at work and trying to look busy, so I log on again at the weekend. Glad you and all your family are well xx |
| 6th July 2005 andi | Resolved to make a Point - From: Uros, Copocabana and the Isla del Sol No more messages from me then, Elizabeth, if that is your real name. |
| 5th July 2005 Beamish | Live8 - From: Colca Canyon Tour I had just been thinking about Live8 when I got that message, Andi. I´ve no music player with me, and I´m beginning to crave. Stereophonics would be just the job to start me off... |
| 3rd July 2005 andi | Live8 - From: Colca Canyon Tour Hey luv, thanks for sharing your blog with the whole list, otherwise I would never have known! Did you catch any of the live8 concerts where you are? I'd imagine it's probably the last thing on your mind. Well, sufficed to say, I was thinking of you when the Stereophonic boys were on stage, and they were played with suitable aplomb. Take care and all the best, andi |
| 2nd July 2005 juice | - From: Spot of sport of an afternoon i've only discovered this today as i don't have the internet at uni! what i have been missing out on! wow bates- you are so lucky. miss you. xxx |
| 2nd July 2005 juice | - From: Journey LOVE YOU BATES! |
| 29th June 2005 Scilla | - From: Pisac today don't you dare go and get yourself killed leaving all your posessions filling up our garage. Still I suppose there is always the car boot sale option... |
| 28th June 2005 Beamish | - From: Pisac today Yes, I remember you saying you really enjoyed the cycling, Sammie. I think I probably will do it... |
| 28th June 2005 Beamish | - From: Arequipa You can send private messages too, if you have something really saucy to say. Dad´s comment is a variation on the Bates family classic of, "Well, yes, I suppose you can have another helping of spaghetti if you´re still hungry, but don´t come crying to me when you explode." Meanwhile, you are thinking, "Just hand over the pasta, parent." |
| 28th June 2005 ruth | - From: Arequipa Oh my, I have just realised that everyone can read everyone elses comments. Now I feel I should be amusing, or at least have something interesting to write. Well, I haven't....but I will think about something good for next time. All is dull, I now have 5 weeks holiday in Blackpool....can't really compare to your trip.....however I will continue to read your entries and keep getting very jealous of you! Something good to write...hhm...well, it is thundering here which is quite exciting ?! Love your Dad's comment....Hi Don (can we use this thing to talk to each other over?!), also, Richard I am not 'lost' I've just strayed to the Midlands!!!! Look after yourself Liz, Love Ruthie xx |
| 28th June 2005 Beamish | So that´s one all so far - From: Pisac today Thanks, Dad, very funny. |
| 28th June 2005 Dad | Don't do it! - From: Pisac today Don't you dare do the road of death. But if you do, don't come running to me if you break your leg and if you get yourself killed I'll never speak to you again. |
| 28th June 2005 Sarah RG | Thank God you've got your luggage - From: Pisac today My dear Elizabeth, I came late to this, and have just lived through a terrible quarter of an hour about your luggage. What a relief! Will have to go for a lie-down now, but will be in touch again. Love from us all, be careful. |
| 27th June 2005 Sammie | Def do death road! - From: Pisac today Definitely do the death road bike ride. Was one of the best things I did and I reckon you'd love it. But now I['ll feel REALLY awful if there's some horrbile accident. Maybe I should add a disclaimer! Inca Trail sounds grand (not least for the sheer number of meals!) Keep it up Beamish! xx |
| 26th June 2005 Richard | Long lost.. - From: Back from MP I only meant Claire and Ruth, nobody really long, long lost. Keep up the blogging! |
| 22nd June 2005 Bill | Sorry - From: Journey Sorry I let you down on the paper front. |
| 22nd June 2005 Bill | So relieved - From: Better and better Thank God you are reunited with toothbrush and other contents of luggage. Meant to endorse travel pillow in earlier comments. My life saver - ten minutes in the broom cupboard flat on the floor, head supported by travel pillow, sets me up for hours. Much less conspicuous than walking into broom cupboard with feather pillow. Less good on aeroplanes though. Makes head too upright. Ah well. Takes all sorts. |
| 22nd June 2005 Bill | Random Various - From: Horse riding Why half a guide? Top half no use, can carry bags but not anywhere. Bottom half no use, can go anywhere but not carry bags. We won't go into any extras that might come with bottom half. V. sorry I didn't sacrifice my music commonplace book, given absence of paper in Latin America. Have you really lost your entire rucksack, including toothbrush with carefully drilled holes? |
| 20th June 2005 Richard | Beamish red or black? i think we should be told! - From: Preparing for the IT to MP Very amusing, it's good to know that you're not dead and that you're having an interesting time. Of course it pales in comparison to life here in the North! It's an interesting idea, this blogging thing. What's even more interesting (no offence) is that all sorts of other long lost people are posting comments to you! Funny how it takes you travelling to the other side of the world to bring people together!! Well, i guess you'll only read this when you get back from your trek, so hope you had a good time....i'm jealous! Richard |
| 19th June 2005 Burke | - From: Better and better Beamish this bloggin malarky is great fun! Lovin (where have all my gs gone) your entertaining entries - esp liking the refreshing lack of smugness of your travel accounts! I feel no sense of jealous resentment and instead am enjoying reading them through thoroughly. Ive got to say, I completely agree with the travel pillow phenomenon. I got one a couple of years ago and although I was mercilessly mocked for havin the thing attached to my neck, I couldnt hear the jeers cos I was fast asleep in the lovely land of nod. Have fun and dont speak to any dodgy looking strangers xxxxxxxx |
| 18th June 2005 Ruth Evans | - From: Journey Ha ha....I remember Beamish!!!! Sounds incredible, looking forwards to hearing more travel stories............ xxxx |
| 17th June 2005 Sarah Samworth | Did you see last comment? - From: Journey Hello Beamish! Did you get my last comment? Was soooo long but think maybe it didn't show coz I wasn't registered - boo. Travel safe and keep blogging, last one made me laugh out loud in the office! Love Sammie x |
| 17th June 2005 Sammie | new bill bryson - From: Note Nice work Beamish. Like the nom de plume - definitely the new bill bryson. Well you are single-handedly responsible for my office thinking I'm a weirdo for bursting out laughing repeatedly in the last few mins whilst reading your epistle. A few points to your contemplification and edification: Accommodation (2Cs, 2Ms - easy peasey) Because=porque I do believe. I need to= Yo tengo que+infinitive We need to= tenemos que+infinitive etc Hai (pronouced 'eye') can mean is there? or there is/are depending on your intonation. No idea what the past tense of that would be but that would be how you say 'there was'. One of those 3rd person verbs like il faut in Frog. Now I'm just being a bit geeky so will shut up. I think those are right. Not sure. Kirst will def correct me - she was grande at the old espanol. So on the basis of the amount I know about your admittedly eventful flights out to the wilds of S Am, am looking forward to hearing about the more traditional stuff for these travel journal jobbies (you know, the usual "I found myself at the bottom of a cave whilst wearing genuine llama hair underpants") Well that's what I did anyway. Seriously hun, have a great time and will look forward to hearing about it all. Stay happy, stay safe. Hope all the preparations went ok despite the elsuiveness of suitable black lightweight fleeces and flexible lined paper publications. Have to say that I am in the process of losing my blogging virginity as I type (was it as good for you as it was for me?) so am quite intrigued by the whole thing - well done Hels! Oh and my bday thing was really fun, thanks. Naylor was "nayled" so expect she may be suffering today but hey, so am I. C-L, Lou and Clare all came along but you know how you always feel you haven't had a chance to talk to anyone properly? Anyway, was great, and am only feeling marginally nauseous this morning so game on. Pretty good considering only 3 hours sleep - grrr. Will avoid cheese though now following your timely advice and investigative migraine journalism. Suerte (if you haven't heard that yet, you will soon...) love Sammie x x |
