Up again early to help make lunch. Today we have six Chinese visitors over to be shown a traditional Maasai manyattas in Sargeri (spelling?). Realised by 8:30 that Jasmin hadn’t come to see us in the manyatta…I had locked her in the bedroom and the grandmother KoKo couldn’t understand her when she asked to be let out (I should mention that the reason the door was locked is that it swings open and Jasmin was sleeping when I had gotten up hours before, so she didn’t lock it from the inside) Virginia and Daramas changed into their traditional dress and welcomed in the visitors. One of them works for a company that sends their workers out to parts of Africa to translate the bible. In some cases there isn’t a written form of the tribal language ... read more

During the night I was woken up by Jasmin talking in her sleep…she’s very tired form not having slept the other night. Awake at 6:00am and got up to help make breakfast. I got shown how to milk a cow…very cool. I had to battle with the calf, and at one point he tried to gnaw at my hand. Also the bloody mother kicked me. Well luckily I don’t have to do this often! Sat in the Manyatta making tea with Nashuby, and then started making breakfast….baked beans and scrambled eggs. Pretty soon everyone was around the fire waiting for breakfast. Yummy. I think they found baked beans a little strange. Jasmin was still not up…so lazy! Virginia, her friend Daramas and KoKo all headed off to church in Nairobi. Spent the morning washing morning and ... read more

Woke up at 6am once again. So hungry! The family weren’t up so we all sat waiting in the living room for breakfast. Stayed at the house for the morning and then headed out to go to Ngong with Jasmin. So things I won’t miss: getting on the bus and having a drunk man talk/shout at me. I just kept making the sign that I couldn’t hear him (well the music was so loud). Finally the conductor told him to stop hassling his passengers. Once at Ngong we met up with Virginia and went for lunch…hmmm chicken stew! We hung around Ngong for a few hours until we caught the matatu to the manyatta. Oh my goodness! We were shoved in like cattle! The drive was so good, the sun was setting and I had an ... read more

Awake at 6am, what's that about!! Spent the morning at AMKA doing the food run. Jasmin left afterwards to help another organisation clean a house! Left around 2pm and headed back home. Had already eaten bread and tea for lunch but was served up another lunch, I felt it would be too rude to decline! Headed to Suna internet cafe to sort out a few things and then headed home when it got dark. Spent the evening with the family and the girls. ... read more

Was up so early...6am!! Headed to Gartina in the morning. I'm missing Jasmin's presence at moments like this as I get harassed more when I'm on my own :( Irritating. I know i haven't got the patience for it. Did a couple of house visits and got to see the cutest kid ever! He had huge eyes and didn't change his facial expression for the whole visit! The part of Gartina we visited was quite built up, there were loads of stone houses which is a nice change. One of the ladies we saw spoke good English so i was able to chat away with her, she and her 6 year old daughter both are HIV positive, but they are doing really well. She has a cousin that helps pay the rent but she's hoping to ... read more

Off to Ngando today. We went on our usual house visits straight away. First off we went to see if the lady who had been in hospital for TB treatment had been released. Terrible! She passed away last Friday leaving behind her baby and husband. Very sad. Unfortunately it wasn't surprising as t hose who default on their TB meds generally never recover here. She was so weak and sick. Went to see a lady who had failed to show up for the HIV seminar we held on the 5th, but she had a very good excuse. Due to her weakened immune system she has been getting boils over her body, and at that time the one currently on her face was huge. She's not the greatest health of late. I do hope it improves. Started reading Pride and Prejudice! How sad! After an early breakfast I headed to Suna cafe to complete a report for Solphine...i have my uses. Nothing much was happening at AMKA today. We went for a few house visits but most of the clients weren't in. Left in the afternoon and headed to Junction to buy stuff for dinner tonight! We're keeping it simple and cooking bangers and mash. I love potatoes, i've come to appreciate them since being here. Ugali isn't for me! Dinner was a success. Didn't know before but pork is a real treat to have (would explain the price). That was pretty much the day. Spent the rest of the evening chatting with the family. The 11 year old son Anthony was actually being nice and polite...what a change!... read more

Up at 7am to help make breakfast, I'm hating the 'lazy Maasai' name calling!! Virginia had already gotten up to milk the cows and was back in bed! Lazy Maasai! I decided not to go to church, don't get me wrong...the singing of the Maasai women is something to see but i've done it twice now and that's good enough. Sitting through a sermon in Maasai and Swahili is great day dreaming time but not today!!! Virginia was dressed in full Maasai gear and she looked amazing. Hanna and Lynn went with her to church. Instead I stayed to help make lunch, finish my book (Sons and lovers is poo) and play a little volley ball...oh the memories of Miss Thompson....nasty times in PE! Oh my goodness I don't think i can ever listen to UB40 ... read more

As I found out that the kid we were meant to take to see a rugby match was ill I spent the morning relaxing instead. Watched 'Look who's talking' from 8am to 10am while having breakfast! They have the most cheesiest movies here! Headed to Maasailand around 2ish with Hanna and Lynn and finally arrived at Virginia's gone 3pm. Ahh it's always so great to see them! Peter was feeling much better! Headed straight out to find some giraffes and them back to help cook dinner. Spent the evening chatting and listening to UB40 (I have to send them more cds!). I just love spending time here, the family are so welcoming and the children love to play! Headed to bed early...what else is there to do! ... read more
