Last day...my flight is on Sat about 1am so today i attempted to walk and see as much of Hong Kong island as possible. I dunno i just wasn't feeling it. I think after spending the last few days in and around Yangshuo i've been spoilt, also i've had such great company too. Left Florence's in the morning and headed straight to Central station to check in my luggage. I think it's so fantastic that you can check in your luggage in the city centre without having to go to the airport. So easy. The first thing to do was to check out the Peak tram. Hong Kong is so well sign posted that it was easy enough to find. Got stuck just in front of a bunch of Aussie guys who were in HK for ... read more

So i awoke about 6am to people getting off the bus...since the majority of people remained i wasn't that worried. Then an hour later there was another stop, this time at a police checkpoint to enter Shenzchen Special Econmic zone. Here all of us had toget off to have our IDs checked. I took the opportunity to check with the driver that they were going to the railway station. Lucky for me there was a guy who spoke a little English who kindly acted as a translator! BUT...when the translator told the driver...the driver replied (in Manderian) that as i was the only one heading there they were not going to stop there. And that i should get another bus. Now i had read online that this might occur so i argued my case with the ... read more

Having spent the last few days with great company it was a little sad to be saying goodbye. But heading off to Hong Kong to see Florence was exciting. Spent the day walking around Yangshuo with the guys. Said goodbye to Valentino early on and then checked out of the hostel. I really would recommend this hostel as they were very obliging. Were able to store our luggage in the reception area until the bus that evening. Still used the internet and was able to use the roof top terrace and watch tele. Never once did i feel i was taking the mick. Oh...had my first ever foot massage! As there wasn't much to do we paid 30Y each to have a 30min foot and shoulder massage. Some got more than they bargined for! Chavi and ... read more

So one of my intentions during my travels was to go climbing, i had even looked into a lead climbing course. But when in Beijing i thought the better of this as the weather was so unbelievably hot, and i don't like exercise in hot weather...some may say that i whine when i have to do some :) But no whining today! Gonzalo had found a spot that was completely in the shade, and the sweaty hands weren't a problem, like they are for indoor climbing. All 5 of us heading out...Gonzalo, Jamie, Jael, Chavi and Valentino. Yes that's me and 4 Spanish people. After collecting the climbing stuff from the shop we hired city bikes to head over to the routes. I wasn't overly excited at getting on a bike again, and Jael was with ... read more

Half-Birthday guys!! YIPEEEE!! Ok first off, my bum is sore from the cycling yesterday. So instead of joining Alex and James on another bike ride with their friends, i joined Jael and Chavi for the day. The plan was to get a bus to Yangdi town, then walk to Xingping and finally get a raft back to Yangshuo. Such a lovely day out, but so hot. I think i've finally gotten use to the constant flow of sweat form my face. Another traveller called Lars (Germany) joined us for the day. Chavi was an excellent tour guide with his gift of speaking Chinese. As we walked down river we were constantly approached for bamboo raft offers. Chavi did his best to explain to them that we didn't need it as we were walking. Maybe there was ... read more

Left early to travel with Alex and James to Yangshuo. Had the lady at the hostel write down in Chinese what tickets i needed to get there from Guilin...smart move as the ticket office lady didn't speak a word of English (18Y from Guilin to Yangshuo). Alex and James cycled to the station and dismantled their bikes. They had such an audience!! I can only imagine what it was like for them when they tried to get on the overnight trains! Even with the wheels off the frame is still so huge which might explain why the bus driver became a little flustered (and shouted at us!) when we tried to get the luggage on the bus. Dropped off the luggage at Yangshuo 11 Youth Hostel, couldn't check in till later. Hired a bike from the ... read more

Ooopps! So i was meant to be ready in the reception at 5.30am for get a taxi to the airport with Jael and Chavi. But i somehow switched off my alarm. I was awoken to Jael whispering my name through the door! Luckily all i had to do was quickly dress while Jael brought my bag down. Driving to the airport at that time was great! I finally understood how people could go running outside...all they had to do was get up exceptionally early. The weather was very cool and the roads quiet. Ok first off...Drew...i had the nastiest experience in one of the squat toilets in the airport...i'll have to describe it to you in person as i don't want to offend anyone. GROSS So we thought we were all the same flight together but ... read more

Decided to book the tour through the hostel instead of organising it myself. Headed out with the hostel tour guide 'JaJa'. She was lovely, with loads of enthusiasm for the subject. There were a mixture of people on the tour, with people studying Chinese and on a little holiday, and others doing the same as me...just traveling. Throughout the day i had some really good conversations. The army itself is spread over several pits. It was especially good as it was all indoors. JaJa had a favourite of the archer, it was the first statute that was discovered by a farmer in the late 70s. They originate from the first emperor of the Qin dynasty. The majority of the army can't actually be seen, as it's all hidden by the roof. Over time they have been ... read more

Had a relaxing morning walking around Beijing. Checked out Tiananmen square...so packed! The communist party have been celebrating their 90th year so there was a big flag marking the dates! Went to the Foreign bookstore to get a phrase book...and maybe also look for a knew Rough guide of China...alas...they don't stock them! I'm not surprised as i'm sure it mentions something wrong about Taiwan! In the afternoon i headed to the airport to get my flight to Xi'an...less than 2 hrs flight...better than the 13hrs on the train. China Eastern Airline...checked in luggage no problem and the flight was so easy. Once in Xi'an airport got a taxi for 150Y to the hostel. The hostel is lovely, but then so was Peking international hostel in Beijing. After checking in i spent a few hours walking ... read more

So i'm staying another night in Beijing! I tried to get a ticket on the train to Xian but there were only standing tickets, and i didn't fancy standing for 13 hours in a packed train! Met Tresa and Jose at the Forbidden city in the morning. I've learnt quickly that Chinese tourists don't like to que or care for personal space. Being a commuter in London has definitely toughened me up! Today was a hot one! I couldn't believe how many people were there at 8am! They were all sitting in the square waiting for the gates to open. And then the flow of people was a constant stream. As soon as we could we moved to the right side and checked out those buildings, anything to escape the crowds! It is a beautiful collection ... read more
