Today we travelled to Santiago, Chile, where we would leave our beloved South America! We had time in the afternoon to look round this huge, modern and lively city before setting off for the airport. Whilst sipping a fairwell cocktail in the Plaza de Armas, three young men performed a drum / dance which was very entertaining - see the video! We've absoloutley loved South America and feel vey sad to leave, but hopefully the rest of the world will be just as good! Adios South America! ... read more

As a belated celebration of our three year anniversary, we decided to go to Maipu, an area famous for its wineries. We hired bikes and got a map of the area. We visited six different wineries, a chocolate factory and an olive factory. As you can imagine we (BEX!) felt a little worse for wear by the end of the afternoon. For lunch we stopped off at a grill house, where we got all you can eat meat and wine. The lady kept bringing more meat and after the third plate we had to give up (unfortunately!). ... read more

After the disaster of missing our jeep at 6am to the border (must buy a new alarm clock!), we eventually got on a bus to take us to Tupiza at 9am. The bus was supposed to arrive at 4.30pm, giving us enough time to continue onto Villazon (border with Argentina) before it got dark. However! this is South American time. We arrived in Tupiza (2 hours from Villazon) at 9pm. Unfortunatley, we had no money on us and there were no ATM's that took visa! We started to panic a bit, as we didn't fancy sleeping on the street. After leaving yet another hostel which didn't accept payment with travellers cheque, we bumped into this amazing woman, who offered to give us 40 bolivianos so that we could get a place to stay, saying she hoped ... read more

This was the perfect day and the reason for our whole tour. Our very lazy guide had told us we were getting up at 7:30 for an 8:00 start. Not a chance! We’d been promised a sunrise and we were going to get one! We insisted we got up at 4 am, would have breakfast later and be ready to leave at 4:30 as it would take two hours to get to the centre of the great Salar. We arrived in the middle of the Salar a little after 6:30 ready for the sun to appear. It was so worth the early start. In the haze or the upcoming sun, the sky was purple and the salt beneath us mirroring it. When the sun arrived it was the most amazing sunrise either of us had ever ... read more

Today was another very full day. We had a long journey to the first sight but it was definitely worth it. This was the Stone Tree. Nothing much needs to be said, as you can see from the picture; the amazing giant stone is exactly the shape of a tree! The next stop was the mountain of seven colours. This multicolored mountain was extremely beautiful but did not affect us as much as the Stone Tree. Many of the mountains around were equally beautiful. We saw many stunning lagoons today, each full of flamingos, which we never tired of seeing. The lagoons were surrounded in salty clay that was really stinky and stuck to your boots. It was a lot of fun to walk over though. We also drove over a mini salt lake, which the ... read more

Today was a full day with lots of things to see. The first stop was the Leguna Colorada. This was a red lagoon where hundreds of flamingos made their home. This lagoon was really spectacular as it changed colour depending on the position of the sun. We were lucky to see it very red. Our next point of call was the geysers. We found these absolutely fascinating! Apart from the putrid smell of rotten egg due to the masses of sulfur produced. These were in the middle of nowhere but you could spot them from a distance. Clouds of steam shot up in the air and as you edged closer the surface appeared more like the craters on the moon. Inside each crater was bubbly grayish liquid that spat up at you. After the geysers we ... read more

The next stop on our agenda for Bolivia was Uyuni. This small, highly touristy town did not have much going for it other than the fact that it is the beginning point for the Salt Lake Tour, that we were desperate to do! We had a bit of a disaster in booking the tour. There are tour companies in Uyuni everywhere all frantic for you to sign with them and all offering pretty much the same thing. We were severely warned in our guide book to check a few out before you decide and to make sure no more than six people are booked on your tour. The tour lasts for a maximum of four days and you travel about by jeep. The driver/ guide plus cook would make more than six very uncomfortable. We followed ... read more

Our intention for visiting Potosi was to see the famous silver mines there. This was such a brilliant day! We went to the mines with a group of 13 people. Firstly we stopped at a small shop, where we were told we aught to buy the miners a present. There was a choice between tobacco, cocoa leaves, cold drinks and of course Dynamite! We, being health conscious, chose cold drinks. Dom, however, did decide to buy some dynamite for himself as this was an option, seeing it as something of a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity! When we arrived at the mine the first thing was to set off the dynamite we had bought for ourselves. We were instructed on how to construct the bombs, as explained in the photos. It was then time to light ... read more

Today was quite a significant day for us as we were leaving Peru and entering Bolivia. We felt sad to leave Peru as it was the first stop on a travels and we have had such an amazing adventure there. Our bus was not direct to La Paz, the capital of Bolivia. We had to make a stop in Copacabana, which lay on the Bolivian boarder. There was some joyous singing from Dom as well as Bex, whatever he may say! We also shared our bus with about 30 nuns. Dom was itching to take a photo but thought it may be inappropriate…until..one very friendly nun whipped out the most enormous camcorder and started filming us! The journey was really amusing. At one point we had to cross part of Lake Titicaca on a speed boat. ... read more

Day 2 After a lovely pancake breakfast we left our family, having given them the presents we had brought for them. Although it was very much aimed at tourism, it had been a wonderful experience to be part of how these local people live. We then left Amantani and moved on to Tequile island. Here, we walked around pretty much the whole place and had some lunch in the Plaza de Armas. The island didn’t really have much about it, not as much character as Amantani, but the views were again stunning! We then took the three hour ride home in the brilliant sunshine, back to Puno, where we were to prepare for our journey to La Paz the following day. ... read more
