PHOTOS!b Chaing Mai is Thailand’s capital of the north and brims with Thainess! Unlike Bangkok’s high rise towers, Chaing Mai is full of market stalls and little book shops. We spent five days here; however 3 of those were spent in the nearby Jungle! As well as hiking through the forest, we stopped by a beautiful waterfall for a very powerful shower. The highlight of the 3 days was definitely the wonderful experience of riding an elephant!! We actually got to sit on her head while she plodded along. We were surprised at how rough and hairy her skin was. These “gentle giants” were so clever and agile, following their masters’ orders as we trekked along narrow and steep tracks. We also Bamboo rafted downstream, which was very fun, particularly when we went through the rapids! ... read more

Ayutthaya & Sukhothai Asia » Thailand » Ayutthaya By BallingerLewis July 5th 2007 Dom and Bex After spending hardly any time in Bangkok. We left the pollution for the delights of central Thailand. A two hour train journey brought us to Ayutthaya, the former capital of Thailand. This was an important landmark because of the remnants of the ancient city. The old city is surrounded by a huge moat, making it an almost impenetrable place. Unfortunately for the Thais, the Burmese managed to break Ayutthaya’s defenses and sacked the city, forcing the Monarchs south, to Bangkok. The remaining sights were very interesting and are scattered amongst the modern b... read more

Our next point of call for Thailand was the south, where we stopped first at Phuket. Downtown Phuket was pretty dingy, the dirty market stalls were surrounded by irritating Tuk Tuk drivers and flies. If anyone has seen the film The Beach, then they may be mildly impressed that we stayed in the Hotel that the “flop house” scene was filmed in. Unfortunately the place had not changed and with its rotting doors and smell of sewage it wasn’t the nicest place we’ve stayed in (although not the worst!!). Kata beach, where we stayed the next day, was a much more pleasant area, although overrun with tourists. We had a relaxing day sunbathing (Bex, not Dom) and swimming in the boiling hot sea. This is one of the areas that was hit hardest by the ... read more

Bangkok is a pretty crazy place! It is difficult to express in writing how diverse some of the areas are. Khao San road (where we stayed) is a tourist bubble packed with street stalls and restaurants. We were a little disappointed when arriving at Khao San road as everyone not selling something was a westerner. However, 2 minutes walk round the corner we escaped the tourists and found ourselves in the middle of a pro democracy rally. At first we thought this was a religious concert or something similar, however, as you will see from the video, it was a bit too heated for that (plus the massive banner that said "Democracy Now" gave it away!). All the Thais seemed pleased to see us at the event and kept telling us to spread the word round ... read more

We left yet another dreary day in Cairns for sunny and sticky Singapore. Immediately we were blown away, not by the heat but by the air con! (At time of writing this we both have colds from repeatedly going into and out of air conditioned buildings!). Singapore was ultra modern and densely packed with high rise buildings. Apparently Singaporeans love to eat and shop - this was evident by the sheer quantity of food stalls and shopping precincts. Singapore seems to have a little piece of every Asian culture. We stayed in Little India, which is supposed to be just like downtown Mumbai. (We will let you know if this is true when we come back from India - our next trip!!) We spent our first day browsing the market stalls in Little India and enjoying ... read more

Today we began our Scuba course, which is what we came to Australia with the dream of doing! We spent the first two days learning in the classroom and in a purpose built swimming pool. This was fun, but nothing compared to the third and fourth days! The course was an open water PADI course involving some fairly technical elements which made sure we weren’t going to make any mistakes under water. The fact that our crazy Japanese instructor Mitz (who looked like a graceful gymnast in the water!!) kept telling us we would DIE if we did anything wrong, made us very determined to get it right! We did all sorts of underwater and surface skills that we never thought about before the course. We also sat an exam at the end of the second ... read more

On our second day in Cairns we went on "Safari" into the Rainforest. We visited the Daintree River, taking a cruise downstream where we spotted several crocodiles and a load of tree snakes. We took a walk round the rainforest looking for Cassowaries and learning about the various foliage. We got a little closer to nature during our BBQ lunch, when a Huntsman spider (the biggest in the world - this one only the size of a fist!!) crawled up Dom's leg and towards his head. In his haste to get rid of it he brushed it on to Bex, who luckily didn't realise it had been on her until it was swept off - otherwise there most definitely would have been tears. After lunch we went for a swim in a nearby creek - of ... read more

As you already know we spent 10 days in Caboolture (1 hour out of Brisbane), strawberry picking. This was because we had little money left and had our hearts set on Scuba Diving at the Great Barrier Reef! The work was fairly tough and a little back breaking. We spent eight hours a day wheeling ourselves up and down rows of strawberry fields in a trolley. The pay was per kilo so we worked as hard as we could for the extra cash! It actually wasn't too bad, we shared a house with 8 other people who we had a lot of fun with. We had thought there may have been trouble getting paid as the operation was a bit disorganized. Our contractor was an Iraqi immigrant and his staff were all from the middle east. ... read more

From Sydney we took a 12 hour bus journey to Seymour, a small town and hour north of Melbourne. We stayed with Faye and Michael (Mick) (Peter and Susan Kerr's brother + sister in law!) on thier "ranch"! We lived like royalty for the 3 days we were with them and were so lucky to have personal chauffers of Seymour (and Melbourne). We crammed so much into a small time. Between fishing with Yabbis (see picture) and Koala and Kangaroo hunting, we ate and DRANK (mick!!) more than we had in a very long time.. After Faye and Mick took us to see the delights of Melbourne, including St Kilda, the Markets and thier hilarious street performers, we decided we prefered Melbourne to Sydney (a big rivalry we gather) - despite the cold! Faye introduced us ... read more

Firstly, we are sorry for the delay in our blog entries! We have been so busy... We are leaving Australia in 5 days, but will definitely be up to date before we get to Singapore..! Having been worried about the change in temperature from Fiji, Sydney was surprisingly sunny and warm (until we left, when all hell broke loose!) We spent our time at the Pink House hostel in Kings Cross. Our hostel was aptly named as Kings Cross turned out to be Sydney's 24 hour red light district! Sydney's district names are bizarre, ranging from Kings Cross, Paddington and Hyde. We visited the fabulous Sydney Opera house; as you walk down the huge hill, the harbour suddenly comes intview and there it is gleaming like sparkling ship sails - breath-taking! The backdrop of the Harbour ... read more
