[R] Devon

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Devon
On Saturday morning we headed to Devon for a long weekend. We had hired a rental car, and it took about 4 hours for us to drive down. We were stuck in traffic for probably a good hour, with everyone having the same idea as us to head to the coast for the weekend! We were on the motorway the entire way, so there was very little to look at scenery wise. We have also found that the radio stations here repeat the same news and the same songs over, and over and over, so we heard about the new outbreak [View Full Entry]

We had a great weekend in Lille. We travelled by Eurostar (a high speed train which links London to Europe) on Friday morning, through the Chunnel, and saw some of the French country side. We arrived at about lunch time (local time). Even though the journey took only about 1 1/2 hours, as soon as we stepped off the train we knew we were in a foreign country, and we were greeted by signs for 'Les Simpsons, Les Film' (The Simpsons - The Film). Everything was sign posted in French, but when we left the train station we easily found our [View Full Entry]

On Saturday morning we braved the crowds and headed off to Knightsbridge to go to Harrods. They were apparently having their once a year sale, but things were still pricey! We had a look around, and saw all the designer labels. I brought some perfume, then we found some food in the food hall that wasn't too over priced, and headed over to Hyde Park to enjoy the sun. It was really nice as there were squirrels running around everywhere, and they would come right up to us, standing up on their back legs to beg for food. We were [View Full Entry]

Finally we are seeing sun again in London! After weeks of rain, we woke up on Saturday to the sun streaming through our window. We went out for lunch on Saturday with Brandt's friend Keri, at a nice restaurant in a place called Shepherd's Bush. We got an outside table, so enjoyed the sun before heading off to the tube to go watch the Prologue of the Tour de France through London. The riders were racing 7km on individual time trials through London, and went past sights such as Westminster, Buckingham Palace, St James Park and ended on 'The Mall' where [View Full Entry]

After a long week of work (and rain), we had a lazy day on Saturday then headed off for Cambridge on Sunday. It was a bit of a mission finding the train (it was at the wrong station, grrr) and we ended up leaving London at 11.45am and arrived in Cambridge about 1.30pm. Thankfully the weather in Cambridge was a lot nicer than London so we got our first sunshine for the week atop a double decker sightseeing bus. Cambridge brings a whole new meaning to the term 'University Town'. The whole town is built around and for the University and [View Full Entry]

Brandt and I started our jobs this week, and all and all they are going pretty well. My job has been hectic, but I am starting to get on top of it now which is good. Noone is very social, so it is good that Brandt works close by and we can meet for lunch a few times a week. Brandt's job is going really well and he is enjoying it. He is working as a researcher for a head hunting agency, so he is calling a lot of people during the day. He started on Thursday after an interview on [View Full Entry]

Every year a fun bike race is held between London and Brighton, and before you ask the answer is no - we were strictly spectating! However, Jess's boyfriend Shaun and Shaun's dad were entered in the race so Jess took us on a trip to the seaside to meet them at the finish line. We left London by train at around 9.30am and got to Brighton at about 11. It was a beautiful day and the boys weren't expected to get in until about midday (they left at 7.30) so we had a wander around the town, making our way to [View Full Entry]

We had pre-booked (and paid for) a trip to Stonehenge and Bath earlier in the week, so when our alarms went off at 6am on Saturday morning we forced ourselves to get up rather than stay in bed all morning. We arrived at the meeting point a little early so had a much needed coffee. It turned out that the trip was a big hit and over 150 people had booked - the biggest BUNAC trip ever we were told - which meant they had to arrange an extra bus so we were a bit late getting away. Bus trips have [View Full Entry]

Over the last few days we have done some typical tourist sightseeing. We went to St Paul's Cathedral and Trafalgar Square which were really cool, and we got some nice coffee there too which is of course the most important thing! We walked through the gardens and had a quick look at Buckingham Palace. We got there late in the day, so didn't end up seeing much, but will go back soon as it looks really interesting. We also went and had a look at the London museum, but just as we were reading about the great London fire, the fire [View Full Entry]

We found somewhere to live on Sunday - just in time too as we couldn't stay at the hostel any longer. We are living in a place called Colliers Wood (about 30 mins from central London on the tube), which we found with the help of my friend Jess from primary and high school who is living in Morden (further South but within walking distance from us which is nice). We are living with 3 Polish people - 2 guys and a girl. They keep to themselves and speak in Polish all the time, but they seem nice enough. I have [View Full Entry]
