Oh, England, my England - From: I'm still alive
Didn't realize from the pics of you and Fish how very English your looks are until these pictures, Av. Well, it is interesting to see how one will eventually look as we age, but I have to say that you look beautiful. And it's a lovely place to stay. Forget Florida, all you see there these days are visitors from Bundesland aka Germany. (My grandmother was from London, btw, and I'm accused of looking English by those familar with the features.)(The rest of my family is mostly Brittish with a spot of German thrown in for variety, lol.) What fun you get to work at the pub. I imagine the old folks you help have lots of fun with the American girl, lol.

experiences - From: How to speak german
Av, your description so parallels ours while in German I couldn't help but laugh. We had friends on the "economy" as we in the Army term it, who blessedly spoke both English and German, though the kids did not. Bennie had that same kind of energy and was constantly tearing about the house. At the end of our stay I was finally beginning to think in German, just in time to fly away! Three and a half years wasn't enough as we lived on the American installation in the midst of "klien Ami-land". BTW, Ami is a derogatory name for Americans. And of all the places we visited, Salzberg was right up there at the top of favorites; so incredible under a big fat full moon. Susan

Duck News - From: the hills are alive...
Breaking news, using the latest scientific theory, we believe that the easter duck (the green one) is in fact a female! Waiting for the first sign of duck eggs to confirm this observation. Bets now open on the color of any ducklings.

HEY AVALON - From: the hills are alive...
Hellllooooo, So I'm writing to you from the boston public library, or as we boston public library go-ers call it, the BPL. Boston is great just got A/C back after my upstairs roommates turned it off thinking that their electrical box was hooked up to their own A/C unit, how silly. I hope you get a cool haircut like julie andrews had and sing the hills are alive at least once while in Austria. I also hope that someday you watch the end of the movie and exclaim, "i was there!!! bah!!!!" Well anywayssss I miss you alot and hope that you come to boston soon! Its a tourist destination as well pretty much better than Budapest, I could probably find some underground clubs with ear biters if you want. COME HOME TO ME. Love, Laura

Which reminds me of a story; when exiting a Manchester (UK) night club, one of our party came out with a toilet seat. He was also in need of medical attention!! Oh to be young again.

how's Pink Ted? - From: the hills are alive...
It will be good when you're reunited with your camera cord; these illustrationless reports leave the imagination too much freedom. And what's this - you were out without your rubber gloves, anti-death face mask, and tube of antiseptic....? What sort of first responder are you? At least Laura would have had floss that you could have used for stitches.

so multilingual - From: How to speak german
The duckies survived two weeks without us. But Tamarind was here the day before we got home, so she received the clamorous welcome and gave them food, so they were a bit blasé by the time we arrived. Yes, Swiss mountains are the very best, and probably the cleanest. Everything in Switzerland is clean, as I remember it. And dotted with little white flowers and cows wearing bells.

yes fabrizio was definitely right about the language stuff, it even works in Italian! just chop of the end of the word and put an -en on. as for the syntax stuff dad, its unfortunate you never know the verb until the end of the sentence, but i think they're used to it by now.

The Awful German Language - From: How to speak german
Don't forget, in German the verb goes at the end of the sentence: Whenever the literary German dives into a sentence, that is the last you are going to see of him until he emerges on the other side of his Atlantic with his verb in his mouth. -- Mark Twain Except when the verb has a prefix, which goes at the beginning: A verb has a hard time enough of it in this world when it's all together. It's downright inhuman to split it up. But that's just what those Germans do. They take part of a verb and put it down here, like a stake, and they take the other part of it and put it away over yonder like another stake, and between these two limits they just shovel in German. --Mark Twain

Laura, I was on the phone today with your cousin Matt Fishburn when you called him. When he called back he said you would be staying with him (Netherlands) Friday. He said it would be a 10-hour train ride from Prague. When you get home Monday Chuck will have already gone back to Penn State. Don't miss your flight back! (I've had some problems being ontime for flights in the past, I hope it isn't an inherited trait)
