Tuesday 01/05/2012 It’s a holiday for most here in Japan, although not technically a holiday, since there are holidays before and after, many businesses will release their employees from work for today and tomorrow. The kindergarten had the day off in lieu of the Zoo Trip Sunday coming up in a few months. But Juku was still running. So today I did some washing, sorted out some lesson plans, did a whole chunk of Japanese grammar, and made Jana’s famous salad with egg for lunch. I reused the Weather worksheet from Friday’s Juku for this evening’s classes. The students were well behaved, except for two boys. I separated them at the beginning of the class, as they couldn’t even sit quietly together for one minute, but they still managed to be disruptive across the table from ... read more

Sunday 29/04/2012 Last night Dominique dropped by to explain the health insurance situation to me. Since we put the wrong address down (because we were never, ever told our address, and were expected to know it off by heart!), we have to go in and get the address changed. Miki was furious that she was going to have to go into the city again, but she did plan the trip for Friday evening when I have Juku, so there’s not a lot I can do when she makes decisions like that. Miki has now planned to go in with me on the 8th, which is the last day I can pick up my health insurance card without incurring a fee. Let’s hope that something doesn’t crop up at the school and prevent Miki from taking me. ... read more

I can’t express how lovely it is to have my weekends to myself. After three years of working every spare minute, and studying in-between, and before that a year of 24/7 craziness of travel and work, and before that, working and study-study-studying every spare minute for three years, it almost feels like a dream. Today I had a humungous sleep in, and lay in bed sweating out my cold to the sounds of children playing on the street and people walking their dogs and having a chit-chat. Pottered around and sorted out all my lesson plans into a folder, tested out the grill and had a cheese and salami sandwich, and then headed out for a walk in this glorious sunshine. My aim was to locate the cheap fruit&veg supermarket that Tom told me about yesterday. ... read more

Went to the supermarket last night, and in the darkness I saw a figure walking towards me. I knew it was a Westerner, and surmised that it was Dominique. I hadn’t really noticed till that moment, that Westerners walk differently to the Japanese. I’m not talking about the unbearable slowness of Japanese walkers, of which I am well aware! But of the way we lift our legs up and down, our posture and walking stance: it’s completely different. In the darkness, and under an umbrella, there was no way I could have told who that person was, but due to the way the person walked, I knew she was a Westerner, and since only two Westerners live on my street, (Dominique and I … and I was pretty sure it wasn’t me!) I took an educated ... read more

Tuesday 24/04/2012 And the sun came out. And it was good, and warm! Kindy from 10-1 today. I was in charge of activity time, and got the children to colour in rainbows, then stick them on large pieces of blue paper (the sky) all ready to put in their end-of-year books. They all looked fantastic. Back to work 4.30-8.30pm. Studied ‘feelings’ again with this bunch of classes. Again, some classes were finished really early, and I could challenge them, but other classes were so very slow. When quizzing one class on last week’s ‘the body’, I pointed to eyebrows, asked ‘what are these?’ and one boy replied ‘Eyebrushes!’ with such conviction that I nearly fell off my chair. He’s actually quite right, they do look like eyebrushes, especially some people’s. Before Juku, I brought in my ... read more

Everything is an experience in Japan

Everything is an experience in Japan. Upon opening my box of Camembert Cheese, I found a tin, like a tuna can, and inside that was foil wrapping, and finally: cheese! I ate the cheese, but only God knows what I will do with all this packaging! The Japanese walking up and down the street like to give me a good stare as I sit in the window typing. When I wave and bow to them, they are in shock that I am not a puppet in the window, and that I can see them with my eyes. There is always a pause of disbelief before they hurriedly bow in return, (hurriedly to hide the fact that they were staring). Yesterday and today have been so very cold, so I am staying rugged up inside with the ... read more

Another sleep in, though not as long as yesterdays. Wrote a lesson plan for my senior Juku students for Tuesday evening, my other Juku students will do the Feelings worksheet. After a mismatched lunch of rice and corn cup-a-soup, I headed out to catch the bus into the city. Had a mild freak out when the timetable said there was only one bus coming every 1.5hours, but that must have been another bus. I was assured when an old lady started waiting with me for the bus. 370yen into the city, and I had a wander around the 109 Shopping Centre. My heart ached and my very soul was crying looking at the wonderful shoes. They were so beautiful and original, and there really was something for everyone! The wedges were in block colours, as well ... read more

Friday 20/04/12 Assisted in the Panda classroom today, and put the front and back covers on the memory books. The children loved them! They were each looking through at their work, and then put them in their lockers to take home to their mums. The kids had spaghetti for lunch which was as messy as you would expect with their white tops. The students are just starting to get used to me, and ask me questions. Usually they scream out ‘Rebecca Sensai!’, but now and again they will come and ask me for help instead. It’s a slow process. Just a short day at the kindergarten for me, and I spent the afternoon punching the washing machine till it would work. I think it is more of a lint depositor rather than washer. I made a ... read more

I put my alarm clock (AKA phone) out of reach of the bed last night to make sure I got up in the morning. All that resulted was a slow crawl this morning to grab it and turn it off before returning to bed. I made it to work on time though, as always. Bought a new brand of bread, and it is so dry and stale! I have put it in the freezer to wait till I have a toaster (with my close encounter with starvation, I couldn’t bring myself to chuck it out). So I just had a banana for lunch. The children think this is hilarious, and they chant ‘banana, banana’. Wish I had Banana Man on video! Two days a week, their mothers make them little bento boxes, and the other three ... read more

Woke up this morning with a cold. Drank a cup of coffee, a pot of tea, half a box of juice, used up a whole box of tissues, and by lunch I was A O K. Now that’s how you battle a cold! It was no doubt from one of the children, as they spend all day breathing in my ear, coughing under my chin, and wiping their hands on my face. Tom quite succinctly describes them as biohazards. Biohazards with cute little faces: the deadliest of hazards! A hazard with a cute smile-filled sugar coating. Ok, now I’m going overboard. But you get the picture: kids are germ-bags! This morning the children sang a lot of songs, and then had to do an alphabet maze which they struggled with. Some children just coloured in the ... read more
