Tuesday 10/07/2012 Despite going to bed at 10.30 last night, I slept right through till 8am. Had time to try to connect the internet again, unsuccessfully before heading to school. An internet password magically appeared in the office, but I had to wait till I went home to try it, meaning that if anything went wrong, it would be a whole ‘nother day that the company wasn’t contacted. Took 10 of the kids to the playground this morning, but I sat in the shade the whole time. Back at school we rehearsed the Crocodile song again, and also had a look at the globe, and worked out where Japan, Australia, America and England were. ABC and name tracing for the morning, but we finished early, (not early enough to go to the park), so we learnt ... read more

Monday 9/07/2012 Adjusting to the strange sounds of this new apartment, the wirr of the refrigerator, alarm clocks of upstairs neighbours, sounds of people walking on the street, and so after a restless two hours, I got up at 7am. I also woke up late last night with a throbbing headache, so strong that I thought someone was gripping my head. No kettle here, so I’m regretting not bringing mine over yesterday, I left it till last to pack, as nothing is worse than not being able to have a cuppa when moving. Ah well. Spent the morning blowing up my world globe for the Pandas to play with. They mostly just throw it around the classroom, but now and again I spot some of the kids checking out the different countries. Quick walk to work ... read more

Sunday 8/07/12 Woke up and packed up the last of my things before throwing them out the window (sounds far more destructive when I don’t mention I’m on the first floor). We probably could have fit everything in one car trip, but we spaced it out to two. I was surprised, as actually, I didn’t have as much stuff as I thought. Next challenge was to connect the internet, and after both I and Kazumi’s husband tried for nearly an hour, we gave up, unable to connect to either the wireless or the corded internet. Spent the day putting things in their new rightful places, not before Kazumi dropped ‘round with some Takoyaki and Lemonade for me for lunch! She doesn’t like to be called ‘Obasan’ which means ‘aunty’, but she sure does play the mothering ... read more

Saturday 7/07/12 Kazumi picked me up at 9.30am and we went shopping in the city with Cate and her baby Mikio. Found a 300yen shop, much like the 100yen shop, but nicer! There were also items for 1,000yen. I bought a 300yen blow-up globe to use with my Pandas but also with the Juku kids who have very little concept of the world outside Japan, and have no idea where either Australia or America are, let alone the UK. My shoes were on special, down to 3,000yen, but even size LL was far too small (about 25cm), when I need about 28-30cm. Not fair! I may have glared at a Japanese girl trying on similar shoes in the shop. Then it was back to Asabata for a Mexican lunch: fried beans and mince, home-made guacamole, cheese, ... read more

Friday 6/07/2012 One week in, and I already direly miss my late start on a Friday! That extra hour makes all the difference to my attitude! Made up a Vegemite and cheese sandwich for lunch with my delicious Pompador bread and arrived at school early. I knew if I sat down at all during the morning, I would never get back up, so I just left early. Sang the Crocodile song with the early-bird kids over and over this morning, they couldn’t get enough of it. Also, one child somehow managed to climb right on to my shoulders, (my mind was elsewhere), but after about five minutes I had had enough. The boy peed himself not long after, so I am so very, very grateful that I got him off my shoulders when I did! Tom ... read more

Thursday 5/07/12 I have been going to bed earlier and earlier this week, but doing the work of two teachers with one body is taking its toll. Off early to the Family Mart for some Mikan water, chicken sandwiches (what a treat!) and onigiri, but also to get some change for my gas bill. I’ve changed the dial on my watch so that it is now a little fast which means I get to work five minutes early instead of just on time. My waterproof watch has turned out to not be humidity proof. The other day some moisture got in, and now it is locked in tight. No idea what I can do! Photocopied my Tanabata Rainbow Stars this morning whilst the kids trashed the classroom and threw toys everywhere: I’ve never seen so much ... read more

Tuesday 3/07/2012 Felt very odd to not get my extra hour of preparation and relaxation this morning. When I arrived at school, Miki took me in for a ‘conversation’. Two Juku parents had complained about my method of teaching. They did not like me teaching songs as they are too hard. I think they must have read through the entire song book, but the weaker classes I only teach the easier songs. They said they would be happy for me to teach music if it is a dance routine. To me, this seems back-to-front. Surely I am here to teach them English, not dance? They also thought I didn’t use the text book enough and didn’t use flash cards enough. The boy whose mother complained goes to another English school also, and they want me to ... read more

Monday 2/07/12 After a total lack of sleep last night, I got up at 7.20am to prepare my lesson and also as I had to leave early to pick up my bike from the bus stop and go to the Family Mart for some lunch. Although overcast, it was already warm. It was strange to walk into the classroom without Rebecca there. I was expecting the worst (picture children hanging like spiders from the ceilings and walls), but actually, it ran as smoothly as a normal day. I started my own Mat Time routine, starting with questions for each student as I call out their name and collet their notebooks, Taiso, then calendar work, and then we started learning their new song ‘Never Smile at a Crocodile’. I was amazed how quickly they picked up the ... read more

Saturday 30/06/2012 Had such a crazy weekend, and was absolutely exhausted, so have put everything in dot-point form! Riding to the bus stop, I bumped into Kaori Sensei and her Hubby. Got some sandwiches and a mini pizza to eat for lunch from the French Bakery. Ladies at the bus stop told me to get in out of the sun, and exclaimed to each other about how cute I was. Bus driver thought I was Lady Gaga due to my big purple sunglasses. Before I got on the bus he was taking photos of me on his phone, and then he asked me on the bus. I think he didn’t believe my denial. Walk from bus stop to Sumpu Park and saw red-headed turtles! Before the carp impressed me, but now I only have eyes for ... read more

Friday 29/06/12 Rebecca Sensei’s Last Day Had a half hour sleep in before madly cycling around the town to the French bakery for fresh sandwiches for lunch, and the post office. Things took much longer than I expected at the post office, so only just made it to the school in time to do some photocopying before music class. The music teacher sent the last class out ten minutes early, so I made her take them back in. It took nearly five minutes of two-faced arguing (man was my smile gorgeous!), but I managed to get her to supervise them inside in front of the TV. She then explained to me how stupid one of the girls is, how she is the only kid in the school who can’t manage the tap tap tum beat, and ... read more
