I never got such an expensive bus that gave me so little value for me. I think it cost about $50, it was a 9 hour journey, which could have been cut a lot shorter, it wasn’t even comfortable and there wasn’t any proper food. Furthermore it didn’t actually go all the way to Antigua as we were told, but only to Guatemala City, so we had to take a taxi from there which cost another $10 per person. Arrgh!! Not a good start, but hey. Avoid the company Hedman Alaas if you can! The four of us checked into a, for the country with $7 per night, expensive hostel, one you would call party-hostel. For a party hostel it was quite lame though, so we checked out the nightlife in pretty little Antigua, which you ... read more

After having to spend a night in San Pedro Sula, where it’s not recommended to walk along the streets just like in Managua (I did it anyway together with some people and we’re all still alive ;)), I made it to the Caribbean Island of Utila the following day. It was incredibly hot. Hot and humid with lots of mosquitoes. So many mosquitoes that I carried away scars from waking up and scratching my legs and feet for ten minutes at night. But yeah, these were the only negative things about this place. I talked to some Israelis on the ferry and chose the dive centre they went to, Underwater Vision, to do my PADI Open Water Certification. The accommodation was lovely and new, as well as included in the dead cheap price of about $250 ... read more

After the extremely long day which I had to spend on six different buses plus a ferry, I had finally crossed the border to Nicaragua and made my way to San Juan del Sur. It was fairly late already, so after grabbing some street food, me and three other Germans who I met at the border, went to a couple of the most popular bars in San Juan. When we were just leaving to go back to the hostel, it started raining like crazy all of a sudden. Well, turns out that the rain didn’t want to budge the following day, and as there isn’t much to do in a beach town when it rains, I left again the next day. Off I was on another chicken bus, i.e. old yellow American school buses that are ... read more

I arrived in San Jose and had to immediately recognise how expensive the country is in comparison to South America, a taxi from the airport to the town centre cost $20 and it really wasn't extremely far. San Jose also shocked me because I felt like I was in the USA, any possible fast food chain you can imagine can be found there. Then there were loads of American tourists around, or just American who come to work for a year and/or settle down there. Most people spoke English as well, so it really didn't feel like I was still somewhere tropical and different. So I decided to leave as soon as I could and made my way to Puerto Viejo on the southern Caribbean coast. The place itself is quite small and nothing very exciting, ... read more

Border crossing over to Ecuador, another very easy one. So far I hadn't had problems crossing any of the borders which is quite unlike what is being said in guidebooks. First I was off to Guayaquil, Ecuador's biggest city. I decided to only spend the afternoon there as I didn't really see the attraction to the place. I had studied about Guayaquil in one of my Spanish courses and kind of just wanted to see the peatonalización and modernisation of the place with my own eyes, and as expected I was done seeing everything quite quickly. I carried on towards Montañita, a small village by the seaside in the South-West of the country, which is famous for its hippy atmosphere. The sun didn't really show its rays much, night clubs were shut and bars and shops ... read more

After spending a few days partying in Cusco and enjoying the pretty city (except the 1000's of people in the streets that approach you literally every 10 seconds to try and sell you something), I had made up my mind about how I would get to Machu Picchu - the lost Inca city. I met up with three English guys and girls I had met in different places previously and we decided to do the Inca Jungle Trek - it was fairly priced and didn't mean just hiking for an entire 5 days, but mountain-biking on the first day, hiking 7 hours on the second day, zip-lining on day 3 before hiking another 3 hours and arriving in Aguas Calientes. We didn't have to stay in tents, accommodation was basic but there beds and the meals ... read more

On that overnight bus on the way to La Paz I met a couple from England who I shared a taxi with as we had booked into the same hostel, Wild Rover. This is one of a few hostel chains in Bolivia and Peru, they're all party hostels, so extremely busy with a cheap bar, nice food and super clean. The perfect place to stay in in La Paz, as there's not a lot to do apart from partying. La Paz in itself is a strange place. The capital of the country, it doesn't look like it though and the only way you 'feel' it is because there are constant demonstrations featuring dynamite and fire barricades from the demonstrator's side, and tear gas and water canons from the police's side. What the crowds were demonstrating for ... read more

Atacama Desert/Salar de Uyuni Tour: We arrived at what was for me definitely the most remote border crossing I have ever seen. There was a little building with the brightly green-yellow-red Bolivian flag on top, in the middle of the Atacama desert, surrounded by nothing but rocks and dust. One of the girls in our group hadn't received an exit stamp in Chile by accident and the guy behind the old little desk wouldn't let her in. Luckily our shuttle driver could convince him to give her the entry stamp anyway... even without a bribe. We had breakfast, fastened our backpacks to the top of the two vans we were split up into, and off we were. On route to our first night stop, we stopped at Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde, which were both quite ... read more

My flight from Rio de Janeiro went via Montevideo... I think I was away from 10am to 22pm local time, long day. Luckily I had a very nice Uruguayan man sat next to me, whom I practised my Spanish with... the one with the Argentinian/Uruguayan accent that is... "vos" etc. It's a whole different world, honestly ;) I arrived in Santiago and shared a taxi together with two Kiwis who I met sometime in Rio, however, we had to split up at some point as they went to the bus station whereas I had to make my way to my couchsurfing host's place. I had agreed a price with the taxi driver and told him that I didn't have any more money on me than that (can't remember how much it was now, 4000 pesos or ... read more

Initially I wasn’t going to go to Brazil as I wanted to practise my Spanish as much as possible in South America, and Portuguese was not on the agenda. It was one of the things that annoyed me most in my two weeks there, most people didn’t speak much English and when I spoke to them in Spanish I had to try and understand what they say back to me in Portuguese. It just didn’t work very well. I had the feeling they expected everyone to speak Portuguese to them, it’s not exactly like it’s “the” world language though. Anyway…. I went from Asunción to Ciudad del Este on the Eastern border of Paraguay, where I was lucky enough to meet three English girls that also wanted to cross the border to Foz do Iguaçu in ... read more
