| 14th September 2009 Rebecca Thrap | Kislovodsk 2009 - From: A Toast to the Caucasus Hello, I just found this blog post while searching for information on what Kislovodsk is like these days. I was a student there in 1995-6 and am planning a visit back, but haven't been since then. I am trying to plan my trip and am not sure what kinds of things I will be able to get there and what might be beneficial to bring. Do you think you would be able to help give me a more specific idea about this? You may send me an email if you like, I would certainly appreciate it! |

| 1st October 2008 Sally Jane | Symbol of Democracy? - From: Berlin Revisited A Starbucks across the street from Check Point Charlie? Geez. |
| 1st October 2008 Alan | Anti-Semitism in Germany? - From: Berlin Revisited Not so much, I think. The great majority of the Germans living today were born after the war, and don't feel any more tied to that era than you do. But you may recall the Palestinian attack on Israeli athletes in the Munich Olympics, or that in the 80's, the Libyans bombed a disco in West Berlin frequented by Americans. The threat to Jewish monuments and exhibitions isn't from Germans, these days. |
| 1st October 2008 hannah | ich liebe es - From: Berlin Revisited great post. you have been so amazingly diligent about your blog. so impressed! |

| 4th March 2008 Alan | The Great Flood of 1966 - From: Florentine Reunion The structures on the Ponte Vecchio look a mix of medieval and modern, sort of like the reconstructed housing on the Römerplatz in Frankfurt. I remember the Great Flood because Uncle Bob and Aunt Josephine were stationed in Germany at that time, had planned ahead a vacation to Florence which turned out to be just after the Flood. They went anyway. Aunt Jo liked to tell everybody who would listen that they were the first people in after the Flood. I've always wondered how she escaped being shot as a looter. Or just shot. |

| 29th January 2008 Alan | Flamenco - From: The Sevillian Life Michener's rap against flamenco in his "Iberia" is that it's been corrupted into a tourist show everywhere. Still, it's something you wouldn't see on a normal Saturday night in Arlington. So how authentic was the dancing, in your friend's opinion? Was the flamenco guitar as good, say, as Manitas de Plata? And was the flamenco singing their usual semi-rythmic shouting? Sorry, my Spain will always be the North. Love that gaita, bodhran (borrowed from the Irish), and hurdy-gurdy music! |
| 2nd October 2007 hannah | ahhh, frankfurt - From: Frankfurt ahhhh, deutschland... mmm apfelwein... your blog entry made me nostalgic for my ole frankfurt stomping grounds! glad you had a good time! dear LORD that's alot of meat! |

| 9th August 2007 Alan Joyce | The Hereford Beefstouw - From: Pilgrimage to Copenhagen Yes, Margie and I had our wedding banquet at one of these restaurants -- maybe this one. I don't remember too much about the meal -- hamburgers, I think -- but it was close to City Hall, it looked familiar, and it was as close as we could come that day to being with family. Arwen mentions hot dogs in Copenhagen and her fusion/Asian dinner. The food possibilities of the town must have improved significantly in 30 years. Apart from the Hereford hamburgers, all I can remember is the excellent and inexpensive array of open-faced sandwiches available at deli-like places near the center of town. Way better than hot dogs. We too went to see the Little Mermaid - the statue is really quite small. Apart from that and places Arwen photographed, I don't remember much. On the advice of "Europe on $10 a Day", we took day trips to Roskilde and its old Viking Museum, and over to Malmö, both very quiet places and marvelously green at this time of year. Again, I remember relatively little of it all -- mainly I remember the tumult of emotions of the moment. We could have been anywhere and it would have been the same. For Arwen's next visit to family heritage sites, I'd recommend Berlin, where she went to kindergarten, learned to enjoy elegant German pastries (especially try the Bienenstich!), and went skating on the Grunewaldsee for the first time. Cheers, Dad |
| 7th August 2007 garron | Burrito - From: Destination Wedding in Riviera Maya If two burros have a little one, is it a burrito? You're brave coming between a burro and his lady...Looks like it was a blast, congrats D & D |

| 13th September 2006 Sarah Baker | - From: Last Stop: Island Paradise Arwen and Garron, I've enjoyed reading about your trip so much! It seems like it has been amazing. A random thought: isn't Koi Samui where Robert De Niro books the surprise honeymoon in Meet the Parents? I thought it sounded familiar...clearly I've watched that movie way too often. Arwen, good luck with the bar results! I can't wait to hear about your job. |
| 12th September 2006 Caitlin | all caught up - From: Crossing the street in Hanoi is an extreme sport I've forgotten to read for a few weeks now, but luckily I'm all caught up. | 27th August 2006 Sally Jane | What happens in Bangkok...... - From: Sticky rice and even stickier travelers Cosmic bowling in Bangkok? There's got to be a dirty joke in there somewhere. (Is that what the kids are calling it these days?..... Yes? Maybe?) So what all did you buy on your shopping spree? A souvenir for your favorite cousin perhaps? Just kidding. Love the pictures and your witty and informative recaps - so jealous! Can't wait to see more. |
| 26th August 2006 Alan | Temple Guardian Demons - From: Sticky rice and even stickier travelers The Emerald Buddha Temple is something like the royal chapel on the grounds of the Royal Palace. The King performs the round of annual religious ceremonies there and they're shown on Thai TV. It always struck me how reverential Thai visitors to the temple are. But it was the Guardian Demons that I loved best about the place. Glad you found a good hotel at a reasonable price. When I was travelling there on business, I always stayed at small, cheap places so that I could buy lots of kids clothes for you and things for your mother. Nowadays I'd go upscale like you've done this time. Don't know the Pathum Wan Princess hotel, but Bangkok is a place of constant change. Your mother also remembers the Weekend Market and the dogs in little cages. She didn't like seeing them any more than you did, and she got masses of flea bites in the process. But if you asked her, I imagine she'd remember all the street food she ate there. And finally, speaking of your Mother, I could be mistaken (joke only, as the Filipinos say), but I believe this is your Mother's year in the Oriental zodiac -- Year of the Dog. Just for her, we'll make that the Year of the Basset Hound. If you see something with a dog year zodiac logo, like my polo shirt designed by Princess Sirindhorn that you're probably wearing, you might get it for her. Cambodians use the same system, so they might have something like that too. Nice picture of the Royal Palace Guard too. Looking at him, you'd never think it was 95 degrees with 100% humidity. Love, Dad |

| 19th August 2006 Sabby | i wish scott could see this... - From: Fraser Island Your description of "camping" cracked me up. Who knew that you guys travelling to exotic, distant places of the world would be "roughing it" far less than our dear Scottie in his domestic travels. oh..and as a belated response to your comment about food budgeting - it's not a true bar vacation unless you are in thousands and thousands of credit card debt when you get back :-P A little tapas won't kill you (or splitting that "glass" of wine). |
| 16th August 2006 Laura Kim | Green with envy - From: Sydney: Love at first sight Arwen, Arwen, Arwen. All those pics are beautiful! BTW, you looked so cute all bundled up too!! | 3rd August 2006 Darbie | 37 degrees! - From: Queenstown, NZ I never thought I'd say this, but I might rather be in 37 degrees than 100. Looks like you guys are having a fantastic time and Queenstown is beautiful. I want to see more extreme sports! :) |
