| 26th September 2009 anonymous | - From: Oh How We Hate Capital One I wish I would have known about this company before accepting their cc offer. I hate capital one! |
| 23rd September 2009 Anyone | agree - From: Oh How We Hate Capital One as a friend of a former Capital one employee on the collection end, I can tell you things that will scare the pants off ya |
| 20th March 2009 Erric | They are not improving in my book. - From: Oh How We Hate Capital One I stopped using their credit card after it took me 3 months to fix a fraud charge. The merchant charged my twice! A simple mistake, but Capital One made it a nightmare. I had to make many calls to fix the issue and their Direct Banking is no walk in the park either. This company has bad bad customer service policies. They take "customer no service" to the extreme. They try to get you with low CC rates and high banking rates then hold your cash forever! For the HASSLE (get it) I would stay away! |
| 16th December 2008 tammy | really nice recap - From: Croatia: Zagreb And Down The Dalmatian Coast Your recap is now bookmarked in my Europe section. I'm thinking of retracing your footsteps for my own adventure. Thanks! |
| 28th November 2008 nomad | Perhaps they've improved slightly? - From: Oh How We Hate Capital One Perhaps CapitalOne has improved slightly. I've been living outside the US for the past 3 months now and have not had problems yet---I told them once when I left and my card still works! Their customer service is not great, I'll agree, and they are quite inflexible. The last couple times I've called CapitalOne, I have spoken with people at a call center in India. But the benefits of the card are great. No annual fee, ~1% cash back (on my card), and no fees on foreign currency transactions. |
| 18th February 2008 Alper | He is Mike :) - From: Gallipoli, Troy, and Lounging in Cannakale He is one of the famous comedians of Turkey; Cem Yilmaz. He was acted as in the role of Michael Knight of "Knight Rider" :) He has an old car named as KITT in the advertisement. The hairs are similar, hah :-) |
| 12th February 2008 Joy | - From: Did you know London shuts down at Christmas? We're still bummed that we missed seeing you in Dublin after Christmas last year, but understand. One of these days, they've got to start a cheap non-stop flight between Boise and Phoenix! |
| 5th February 2008 Joy | Potty Mouth! - From: The Wonders of Selcuk Hilarious photos of the "WC" sign and Roger enjoying it the old fashioned way. So did you have to pay for the "atmosphere" on the old school style WC? |
| 5th February 2008 Joy | It's Roger's Long Lost Brothers! - From: Gallipoli, Troy, and Lounging in Cannakale Roger: Judging from your "hairy" look in the photos, I'm thinking the guys on the gas station sign might be your long lost furry brothers! Interesting information on Turkey, a country I've never been inclined to visit because I've got so many above it on the "must see" list. Thanks for sharing! |
| 14th December 2007 Majdas Rooms | Hello from Mostar - From: Bosnia It is Majda and her mum. Thank you for such a detailed insight to your traveling throughout our country. Hope you will be back, and that you still remember Mostar & our Hostel. Wish you both good life. *** Majda |

Good luck and safe travelling. |
| 22nd March 2007 Around the World | Re: Is Alice Springs a sacred place? - From: Alice Springs, Uluru, And Krusty-With-a-K We are probably not in a good position to say definitively whether Alice Springs is sacred. The town is pleasant enough to visit. There is a very visible population of Aboriginies and, in our experience, the spiritual nature of the Aboriginal connection to the land may be such that the land in or around Alice Springs could be sacred. Uluru and Kata Tjuta certainly have a sacred history and a spiritual feel to them. |
| 22nd March 2007 Jess | Is Alice Springs a sacred place? - From: Alice Springs, Uluru, And Krusty-With-a-K Is Alice Springs a sacred place?? |
| 21st March 2007 Sarah Greenberg from the National Trust | Love the blog... - From: Venice Hi Amy, I don't know if you remember me from the Trust but I absolutely love your blog and read it faithfully. If you have time, would you write a quick itinerary of your trip so far - just a list of where you've been and on what dates? I'm trying to talk my husband into a similar trip! Be safe and keep up the fascinating entries. |
| 20th March 2007 Mandi | I am SO with you, Amy - From: Venice Pigeons (aka rats with wings) are horrible creatures and I totally understand that a square filled with them would be your version of hell... WHO would let a pigeon perch on them?! That said, I am thrilled y'all ended up liking Venice... :^) |
| 16th March 2007 Joy | Roger and his faces!!! - From: Cinque Terre Roger, I just choked on my Diet Coke when I saw the picture of your face after drinking grappa. Before I read the note, I thought you were trying to do an impression of an embittered ol Italian grandmother. You're hilarious! |
| 11th March 2007 Rich | confusing - From: Florence I enjoy reading your blogs although it is difficult to follow with the dates all jumbled together. |
| 11th March 2007 Erin | great blogs - From: G'Day, Mate! Put Another Shrimp On The Barbie! ha ha, I got your Dumb and DUmber reference as soon as I read the title !! Love it ! | 8th March 2007 Melinda | HAPPY BDAY Roger! - From: And 2 Becomes 4 in Rome Hope you two are still enjoying the WORLD! Find some cake and eat it too today... : ) |
| 6th March 2007 Joy | Not to be outdone in title.... - From: And 2 Becomes 4 in Rome To protect my adopted home state of Arizona, I do see that what you're referring to as a "Colorado Cheeseburger" actually says "Arizona Dream" on the side of the box. So which is it, Mr. Brown? You guys will have to come for a real burger at In-N-Out in Phoenix one of these days! |
| 6th March 2007 Joy | Bellissimo! - From: Florence I feel the jealousy welling up inside of me as I read this post and see the photos! It's all so gorgeous and I dream of one day going there as well. Thanks for the very descriptive posts! |
| 20th January 2007 Mandi | - From: Chengdu First, I am considering Buddism now that I know that Buddhas love Krispy Kremes... Second, I have no idea how y'all resisted grabbing a baby panda and smuggling it out of there... |
| 8th January 2007 Andrea | - From: 10 Days in Beijing I told you that watching the copy of Garfield: The Movie that I bought you would be crucial to your enjoyment of world travel! |

| 19th December 2006 Andrea | Leg Cast Skier? - From: Cape Tribulation & Daintree Rainforest Umm, are you sure the lady with the cast wasn't covering up some other problem so she could meet her true love in a ski resort like Christy McNichol in that movie we've seen 400 times? It's possible. |
| 14th December 2006 Andrea | - From: Hervey Bay to Cairns These are still just as good as the first ones. Feels like I'm with you. |
| 8th December 2006 kim and Emily | We will miss you - From: Our Day at Steve Irwin's Zoo (July 16, 2006) My daughter and I will miss you so much Steve. Because of you she would like to be a conservationist when she grows up. We have watched you on television for years and feel as if we know you as many of millions of people have throughout the years. We have seen your life change, your family grow and learned so much about the animals and habitats you have protected. We are deeply greaved by your loss and pray for your family daily. May God continue to bless your family and we pray you are happy with your home in heaven, but the world will continue to feel your loss and I hope we can pick up where you have left off and leave the world and it's people a better place when we are called up yonder. Love Kim and Emily |
| 3rd December 2006 Nikole | Yummy... - From: Eating Our Way Through Turkey I am so jealous. I love Turkish food. My favorite little deli is run by two Turkish brothers and they have the most amazing food. My favorite is an eggplant dish I have no idea the name but it is fantastic. Enjoy! |
| 24th November 2006 Brian D. in DC | Hello Again - From: Bosnia at Thanksgiving I have been catching up on your travels and had missed a few entries over the past few months. Just spent the last 2 hours getting updated. Once you start reading the entries, you can't stop. Your writing is excellent and I plan on finishing my required reading of your blog tomorrow. I was particularly interested in the motorcycle trip around Vietnam. It is very interesting that you are the first Westerners that many of the people have seen. As for the food, I don't know if I could consume many of the items that you two have been eating. I probably would come back after a year at least 50 pounds lighter. Hope you had an excellent Thanksgiving and I am sorry to hear about Roger's health problems. Roger, hope you are feeling ok. Hang in there and keep posting the blog entries so I can continue my virtual tour of the world with you two. Again, I want to stress that your level of detail about your trip is remarkable. I can't remember my last meal, yet you two seem to have kept copious notes about each event in your travels. Good stuff. Hope to see you in DC. |
| 19th November 2006 Penry | Under-belly - From: The Big Banana, Byron Bay, the Gold Coast and Brisbane Roger, Your chin looks strikingly like a kangaroos under belly. Congratulations on that. Hope you two are having fun! Ahoy-me-hardy! |
| 16th November 2006 Benben | Sydney! - From: Sydney, New South Wales I currently am enraptured with "Finding Nemo," which features Sydney, and an episode of "The Wiggles" where they sail around Sydney Harbor. Plus, I guess, I have a kid sister named Sydney. But she isnt too much fun and mom always makes me be nice to her and she smells funny. But anyway, I like Sydney the City, so thanks for this. |
| 4th November 2006 Kristim Branch | wow..... - From: Sydney, New South Wales Roger & Amy! I would say greetings from Wisconsin - but i am in California at the moment... First of all - Congrats - what an amazing adventure you two are off on! Clint just sent me the link to the travelblog - and i have enjoyed reading a scattered few enteries. I can't tell you how jealous i am... Rog - you would be psyched to know I was at Lambeau Field last week when Favre took his first ever Lambeau Leap, but alas, i only watched it on TV like the rest of the country as i was in line for Bratwursts! :) I'm glad to hear your travels are exciting as i had hoped they would be. and i am excited to be in the loop now - while i can't promise to post a comment too frequently, i am excited to keep an eye on the blog... Larry Brown - if you read this - HELLO! I will write soon - it has been too long - i hope all is well. :) Ciao -Kristin |
| 24th October 2006 Hank | Re: your blogging - From: Canberra (July 2-4, 2006) Oh, is your little around the world trip tough? Is it hard to quit work and take an 18 month vacation? Is the big bad world beating you down so much you cant even type? It's hard out here for a tourist. |
| 23rd October 2006 Around the World | Our blogging - From: Canberra (July 2-4, 2006) Hank, We're hoping to blog like a bunch of rabbits over the next few weeks. We don't have the luxury of a plush government job with frequent recesses... Amy and Roger |

Also, to splurge, go to the Jin Mao Tower in Pudong, go to the 87th floor to Cloud 9 in the Grand Hyatt to enjoy a spectacular view of the Bund/City and a Singapore Sling. Miss you. Eloy |

| 9th August 2006 AronDiaz | Monkey Mahem - From: Halong Bay (May 26 - 28, 2006) Roger, your experiences with monkeys reminds me of a similar experience I had with the Barbary Apes of Gibraltar. Only there the guides actually amuse themselves by getting you to place these wild beasts on your shoulders while you feed them candy so you can get a picture to record your stupidity for posterity. |
| 8th August 2006 Andrea | Scary jungle monkeys - From: Halong Bay (May 26 - 28, 2006) How many times do I have to tell you not to feed the animals? |

| 31st May 2006 Nikola Simon | Amazing!!! - From: The Heat is on in Saigon What an amazing journal, I have read this one with great delight and made notes on where to go etc when we get to Saigon in December. Have a fantastic time - Nikola |
| 17th May 2006 Nikola Simon | Great Journal!! - From: Mekong Delta (April 18 - 23, 2006) I don't know either of you but but feel like I do already!! Your journal is great and makes me look forward to our trip to VN in December even more. Have a great time. Nikola |
| 9th May 2006 LH | Siem Reap will not disappoint - From: Siem Reap Dear Jeff, just want to let you know that Siem Reap will not disappoint. Just remember to pack loads of memory sticks if you are doing digital shots or rolls and rolls and rolls of film if you are doing it the "traditional" way. 8 days will be about right if you are going to spend time taking photos. Have been to Siem Reap twice - last Christmas and then again in Jan this year for my birthday treat to myself. Am planning a 3rd trip, maybe this weekend. Trust me. You will LOVE Siem Reap :-) Later! |
| 30th April 2006 Hamilton | Earth Day - From: Phnom Penh Hey Rog and Amy!! We love your travel journal!! I thought I would write you a quick note being that it was "Earth Day" the other day and I was thinking of you. I cannot believe how much you have done so far, what a great trip! I especially loved the addition on the toilets of Japan - it's like I reading lifestyles of the rich and famous. So here I am in Cincy, looking for a new job (another story) and trashing pop cans, burning paper and doing everything I can to go against everything that is right about earth day while thinking where in the world is Roger and Amy? When I check out this great site. I cannot believe how much you have already accomplished, you must be having the experience of you life. We may be joining you soon, I hope you have room for the four of us. Blake is upset that you ate worms, he is a big worm harvester these days. Keep up the communication and pictures and we will keep in touch. Don't drink the water! |
| 28th April 2006 Jeff Revell | Great Journal - From: Siem Reap Thanks for the great information on Siem Reap and the Angkor temples. I was especially pleased to read your review of the Villa Siem Reap. I am traveling to Cambodia for the first time in late June and have booked a room at the same guesthouse. It sounds like I made the right choice. I will be there for 8 days so I won't have to keep the frenetic pace you did around the temples. I am hoping to make some excursions to the surrounding country side during my stay. I read that the Villa can arrange bicycle tours. Did you do anything like this? Once again, thanks for all of the great information. I will be traveling alone and being a photographer by trade, I can only imagine the number of photos I will take in such a majestic place. Cheers, Jeff |
| 25th April 2006 edb | your time in Japan was too limited! - From: Miscellaneous Thoughts on Japan Granted, there are amazingly few American candy bars (I saw Snickers at a train station in Tokyo, and M&M's are available in a limited supply), English television is readily available (perhaps not in hotels, but in homes via satelite): I enjoyed world news with short sections in various languages (Italian, English, German, French), and American Movies that I could hear in either English with Japanese subtitles or Japanese dubbing). As for the young folks style, while more varied and individually unique, I found the kids wearing all manner of Western dress and hairstyles... including skirts, jeans, etc. For the most part, they are more creative in individuality (perhaps because they wear uniforms so often in school and at work, they enjoy their free time more). Signs are often in English and they use international symbols. For me, other than not enjoying raw everything, the excessive smoking everywhere was most annoying. Hotel rooms reeked, as did public bathrooms, restaurants, etc. |
| 24th April 2006 Jen Frazier | Food! - From: Thailand Wrap-Up All I want to do when I read these is head out for Thai food! Thanks for the interesting reading material to get me throught the work day. |
| 18th April 2006 Andrea | no place small enough - From: Bangkok and the Cambodian Border (April 6-10, 2006) Rog, I'm glad to see we have an understanding on not leaving Amy in foreign countries. It's only natural to get the urge sometimes, but I really appreciate you fighting it. |
| 17th April 2006 Eloy | hysterical - From: Bangkok and the Cambodian Border (April 6-10, 2006) Oh the adventures of Monk stalking...notice how they all have cats? Glad your visit with Tun worked out, she is wonderful. Also, I heard Vertigo was awesome and designed in a way that would never get approval from any US zoning board. Miss you. E |
| 14th April 2006 Eloy | congrats - From: Kanchanaburi, Thailand (April 4 - 6, 2006) the certificate of pride is something you should be proud of and i can tell you are. So jealous. And your tan is looking savage Roger. |
| 12th April 2006 Amanda | the fun of travel! - From: Our itinerary finally i got round to checking out your site. i'm impressed with the range of countries you're planning to see. i'll be even more impressed if you actually stick to it! enjoy the fun of all the changes and variety that you'll encounter. make sure you tell me when you are in my part of the world as I'll definitely fly out to see you guys! |
| 11th April 2006 Ted Kord | Bug Zapper - From: A Week at the Beach (March 27 - April 3) The zapper is beyond cool, but unfortunetly I was brought down by a rather human Max Lord. |
| 11th April 2006 Neal & Sarah | Toy - From: Chiang Mai (March 15-16) We met Toy in exactly the same way....a friendly face in a sea of taxi drivers. He was our guide around Chiang Mai for 3 days.......a perfect gentleman....he and his sister drove us wherever we wanted to go, and some places we didnt but glad we saw. If you're ever in Chiang Mai.....keep an eye out for him! http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d100/Nealie/Toy.jpg As to the food there....perfect.....Sunday evenings the streets shut and they hold the most fantastic street market you could ever wish for......red curry chicken and noodle soup was to die for! |
| 4th April 2006 Nikole | paintings.. - From: Chiang Mai Part 2 (March 19 - 24) Come on a person can never have too many paintings associated with elephants. |
| 3rd April 2006 William Katt | Slurpees? - From: Hill Trekking In and Around Doi Inthanon National Park (Southwest of Chiang Mai) (March 17-19) Rog, Tell me you had a Slurpee at the 7-11 Hut! Your blog rocks harder than Warrant ever did, no matter what people over there might say! I learned on Wikipedia there's a big Warrant fan base over there...you know how factual that is, so watch yourselves -- you don't want to come back to the US as Warrant fans. They might not let you back in! (FYI, this comment took a strange, quite unintended turn...) |
| 3rd April 2006 Chuck | Smorking, and no doing so - From: Miscellaneous Thoughts on Japan Every once and awhile, I look down at my little dog, and firmly tell her "No Smorking!" She wags her tail and agress not to smork. |
| 30th March 2006 Around the World | Food And Stomach Issues - From: Chiang Mai (March 15-16) We have been to Tulum (Yucatan), Mexico City, Loreto (Baja) and Roger has been around the Guadalajara area. Every time - every single one - we came away with pretty severe reactions to the food or water regardless of how careful we were. When we arrived in Thailand, from the rather antiseptic isle of Japan, we expected similar conditions - the water is generally unsafe to drink, the food is not preserved or refrigerated like in the US (vendors may carry chicken or pork around for hours before heating it up to serve, for example) - however to date we have not had so much as a blip. All the food here is freshly prepared (for the most part) and everyone is careful with the water. Whatever they do here sanitation-wise it is superior to what we have experienced in Mexico. (Keep your fingers crossed!) |
| 30th March 2006 Peter Jackson | Kong - From: Chiang Mai (March 15-16) Its good to see the Thais realize what I did not by carving out a good 80 minutes made the movie better. Kiwis...Out. |
| 30th March 2006 Monkey Suit Mike | The toilet brings me back - From: Hill Trekking In and Around Doi Inthanon National Park (Southwest of Chiang Mai) (March 17-19) Roger and Amy, The photo of the toilet brought back a flush of memories from SE Asia. It looks like you are starting to get into the back pack experience. I want to join you! |
| 29th March 2006 Jo | Street food - From: Chiang Mai (March 15-16) Although I don't care for any details, I'm just curious whether there have been any food poisoning issues arising from eating food prepared by street vendors. When I studied in Mexico they warned us that eating from the street would essentially have the same effect on your stomach as eating glass shards. Apparently I'm not as brave as Amy! Still loving the blog and was very happy to find two entries when I checked this morning. |
| 29th March 2006 Andrea | - From: Hill Trekking In and Around Doi Inthanon National Park (Southwest of Chiang Mai) (March 17-19) You better not be petting any of the barnyard creatures, you hear me! |
| 29th March 2006 Tony Danza | Buddha, Ass Cheeks, Buddha - From: Chiang Mai (March 15-16) Your inspired selection and organization of your (genuinely fantastic!) photos is something to be proud of. Sounds -- and looks -- like you two are having an amazing time! Take care of yourselves..! |
| 24th March 2006 Brian D. | Hello - From: Passage to Bangkok This is a great way for me to travel the world from my desk. Keep writing in great detail so I can live through you guys. I will be on a train tomorrow to travel to the exciting destination of ...... Connecticut. Quite lame and not as exciting as Thailand. |
| 23rd March 2006 Eloy | oh... dont forget - From: Passage to Bangkok to get a "Traditional" Thai massage. Its well worth the $10. Cheers, E |
| 23rd March 2006 Eloy | It gets better... - From: Passage to Bangkok Thailand is full of awesome and friendly people (although the street markets are no where to find them). If you really want to have a good experience, stop by a fancy hotel for a nice lunch to escape the streets. The JW Marriott (http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/BKKDT) or the Westin (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/westin/search/hotel_detail.html?propertyID=1446) on Sukhumvit road (take the sky train near soy nana) is a perfect place to enjoy a fresh watermelon juice cocktail by the rooftop pool. And try the Singapore style noodles, they are delish. There is also fantastic Korean food around (try the bibimbap - medley of meat, veggies, and rice, with red chili sauce that is not too spicy), and find a Thai-Suki restaurant where you can make your own soup at the table with fresh ingredients you choose. Oh Thailand. I hope you guys really enjoy it there. And the vendors, just say "Mi-Ow Khrap" for Roger or "Mi-Ow Kha" for Amy (means no thank you in Thai.) |
| 21st March 2006 Mike | Kit Kat! - From: Miscellaneous Thoughts on Japan I am so looking for the special Kit Kats when I'm in Osaka next week. |
| 21st March 2006 Around the World | Locatiion of Cat's Living - From: Hello Tokyo It's in Odeiba - we think on the north side street level of the Decks shopping mall. You shouldn't miss it! |
| 16th March 2006 Rachel | cat museum - From: Hello Tokyo Where exactly is the cat museum? It seems too bizarre to pass up when I am in Tokyo. |
| 13th March 2006 Jenny B. | Hairless Cat - From: Hello Tokyo First, I have to say that I would have met you in Japan if I thought I were going to see a hairless cat. I've always wanted one. Second, whoever is writing this is absolutely hilarious. You should consider that for a career when you get back to DC (which is where you are coming back to in case you need reminding). |
| 13th March 2006 Jon Hrobsky | Noriyuki "Pat" Morita - From: Hello Tokyo Was there any kind of eulogy, day of rememberance or shrine set aside for Okinawa's favorite son. Playing Al on Happy Days and as some slap-o sidekick to Jay Leno should have been enough, but then to become Mr. Kesuke Miyagi should be enough to get something going. I am hoping for an update on this situation. |
| 10th March 2006 Joy Grainger | Funnier than dirt - From: St. George, Las Vegas, Kansas City and Des Moines visits Roger, If I didn't know you better, I'd say shame on you for your take on all the polygamists in Utah. However, knowing how you fancy watching a 90 year old man walk around a corporate conglomerate with his 16 year old brides and their 30 kids, I know it's all said with jealousy. You definitely need to add disclaimers to allow us to prepare ourselves before we read these at work. I was laughing so loud, others around me wondered what was going on. You two are hilarious and should write all of this into a book upon your return. |
| 10th March 2006 karmajenn | Way to ease into your trip... - From: Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto I've been utterly fascinated with your trip so far and how you've been getting around in a place where speaking English isn't a mandate decreed by the lord almighty. Just know that I'm living vicariously through this blog while marinating in various infant excretions at 3 am. Ok, maybe you don't really have to know that. Anyway, can't wait to see where you go next! |
| 9th March 2006 Mike | - From: St. George, Las Vegas, Kansas City and Des Moines visits I enjoyed this entry. I found the highlights to include, "Our first day in Utah was spent in Nevada" and "If you want to cruise for polygamists, Wal-Mart is the place." However, the best part was definitely, "If you can’t decide between the pork, ribs, sausage and beef, don’t." Words I live my life by. If that isn't a t-shirt somewhere, somebody really dropped the ball. |

| 23rd February 2006 Monkey Suit Mike | Your itinerary - From: Our itinerary Any schedule that uses terms like Late and Mid with a month or year is bound for success. When you are done you both can be farmers since you will be used to your seasonal schedules. |
| 22nd February 2006 Joy Grainger | Some ideas - From: Our itinerary Roger and Amy: Have a wonderful time seeing the world for the rest of us jealous working fools! By the way, when you get closer to going to Australia, let me know. My sister-in-law has lived there since September and travelled all over the continent. If she's still there, I'm sure that she can show you around and buy you a couple of Twinkies. |
| 21st February 2006 Jo Mettenburg | NY Trip - From: MLK Weekend in New York Loved reading about your trip to NY and how most of the entries were about food! :) Jim and I also toured the Tenament Museum last time we were in NYC together and thought it was really interesting. Good luck with your travels. |
