Around the World in 200 days

We head off on our travels in an easterly direction (roughly!) and keep going until we stumble across home - oh and there's our wedding in Vegas on the way of course! :-)

We left Yosemite and headed west through California and to the coast - to the super city of San Francisco. We still had a few hours before we handed our hire car back so we weaved our way through the city and drove right across that great big Golden Gate Bridge (a nice looking bridge it is too) and on into Muir woods. Muir woods is home to a very nice indeed collection of Giant Redwood trees - the tallest trees in the world. Giant Redwoods are taller than Sequoias but they aren’t as ‘big’ because Sequoias have a right big girth on them (as well as being fair tall). We liked the Giant Redwoods a lot - Muir Woods is a gorgeous place and you could easily spent a few hours walking around those trees. ... read more

After the party time we had in Vegas we were ready to head off and do some nature - to have us a honeymoon. We assembled an elite squad for this early part of our honeymoon that consisted of the new Mr & Mrs T and the Freckleton based trio of Mum and Dad Thompson and Auntie Von - all in a ‘big’ mini van. We found our mini van in the car park of the Mirage casino - just like the chap said, a blue Chrysler Town & Country (ok so it‘s not a cool name for a car but that baby packed a punch let us tell ya). After a bit of time and a krypton factor challenge we figured out a way of packing all five of us in the car and a ... read more

Most of you will know that we got married a few weeks ago in Las Vegas - thanks very much to all of you who sent us kind messages - we were touched by them indeed. We didn't manage to do any more blogs during the USA secton of our trip because we struggled to find internet stations - so many apologies for not replying to your emails! The USA has pretty much moved on from the internet cafe and it's all WIFI zones now which is great if you have a laptop with you but not so great if not. We got back into the UK yesterday morning (6am Tuesday 17th) and these last few blog pages are being written at 3am (wide awake - jet lag and all that!) on a rainy Lancashire morning ... read more

Well we had a right good few days out there on the Inca Trail - super perfick it was - top weather, great guides (we never grew tired of our guide calling us his 'super mountain hikers') and a top banana group made for an uber good trek. Each day was pretty hard going what with being up high and with the heat and all that but the trail was excellent and the scenery was amazing pretty much all of the time. We were really well looked after on the trail too. Each day our super porters woke us up with a warm coca tea and then laid on a right good spread of a breakfast - then we would set off on the trail leaving said porters to pack up camp (tents - dining shelter ... read more

We left La Paz (again) and headed up the road for half an hour to La Cumbre which is well high up at 4900m. From here we picked up an Inca trail that we followed (on foot) down through the Andes for the next three days (56km) - the Choro Trek. It's really good the Choro trek because over the three days you decend from way up high at La Cumbre right down to a low of 1400m at Chairo - which gave us a great variety of scenery i.e. we started up at the snow capped peaks (brrrrrr - twas really cold) and then descended into greener looking terrain and finally ended up in the Yungas (cloud forest) which was really green and steamy and darn right hot (in the 30´s)! The other good thing ... read more

We enjoyed some chill out time in Sucre, Bolivia's judicial capital. Bolivia is an incredibly cheap place to travel in - comparable to India and Vietnam - so we treated ourselves to a posh hotel for a few days. Sucre felt like a small town really, not too busy at all with lots of pleasant buildings - a good place to chill. On one day we went to have a look at some dinosaur footprints they have close by that have been jolly well preserved. They have a few different types of footprint but the biggest are 80cm across and belong to the Titanosaurous which is the biggest ever living ´thing´ to have walked the earth! Them greedy Titanosaurous´s used to eat whole forests for themselves! As well as the footprints they have lots of lifesize ... read more

Our final stop in Argentina was in the north western city of Salta - back into the Andes for us. Great big country Argentina - 8th biggest in the world, apparently just behind India - about 960million less peoples living there though! Salta is a good place to do outdoor pursuits and to party but we didn't do any of that because we had a cold each so we slowed our pace down and did some coughing and sneezing instead. On a Sunday afternoon we sat in a cafe with the locals and watched a couple of footy games whilst having a few beers which was fab - we liked it especially whenever a goal was scored because the commentator shouted 'goooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllll' with all his breath which was very amusing for us especially as we were ... read more

We had a few fun filled non stop action packed crazy days in Buenos Aires. We'd barely landed there and we found ourselves in a transit van winding through the downdown streets of this hugemungous and exciting city. We arrived at our destination and were ushered into a building and up some stairs into a studio, ready to learn some new skills, we were ready to learn Tango! The lesson was great fun but we'd probably need a few more goes before we join the Halifax Tango display team... After our lesson we were seated for a steak and 'drink as much vino as you can' dinner before our Tango show started. In truth we weren't expecting that much of the Tango show - we thought it would just be a bit of cheesy 'for the ... read more

We arrived in Santiago 5hrs before we´d even set off from Auckland which is pretty good going given that we were on a plane for 11hrs....! So now, for the moment, we´re 3hrs behind the UK instead of the 13 ahead that we were in NZ. Time travel is pretty tiring though and we've taken a wee while and some big sleeps to get ourselves sorted but we're on top of it now. We enjoyed Santiago, quite a pleasant city to walk around and lively of an evening. From there we travelled south for 11hrs on a bus to the Chilean Lake District and the small town of Pucon on Steve's birthday. On the journey down we passed hundreds and hundreds of miles worth of vineyards and loads of loads of mountains - getting greener the ... read more

Half way to Halifax

Published: March 7th 2008Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland

As we write this blog not only are we half way around the world (geographically speaking) but we're also exactly 100 days into our 200 day trip - and as coincidence would have it we're heading back towards Halifax today as our ever eastwards direction of travel starts to bring us home! We left the delights of Napier on the east coast of the north island and headed into the mountainous interior by way of lake Taupo (the biggest lake in Australasia) finally arriving in Whakapapa. Our main reason in being there was to tackle New Zealands so called bestest one day walk, the Tongariro Crossing, an 18km point to point walk taking in super views across the north island - volcanic scenery and emerald lakes and what not. Unfortunately for us the weather was officially ... read more
