What an adventure!
Your writing makes me feel like I am almost there with you - except I probably don't ache as much!! Loved Kate's tale of the river rafting trip. And the photos are fab-u-lous!! Enjoy the last few days of your adventure!

the great adventurers' return
5 am and i just caught up on your adventures, from scary rapids stories to cool granite and clear water on busy, battered feet. the bit about errors in the carbon 14 dating process were really interesting, especially the bit about european artifacts determined to be over 1000 years older than previously thought! what does that mean? a european presence or trading making its' way north from the lower americas? i am fascinated by this, as it blows all i know about europeans in the west out of the park. i have loved the photos and entries written in different voices making a fun mix on pov. have a safe trip home, and enjoy the beautiful northwest coast and cooler temperatures! xo, karen

I like the beard! At the moment, the thought of 55 degree foggy San Francisco weather sounds like heaven! Chengdu (Sichuan Province) is hot and muggy in August. Your evening with Jill must have been complete fun and jolity. Hi Jill!

Great to see you folks!
Thanks a million for helping me gulp down some smog-free air and gin-and-tonics with fresh juniper berries right off the tree! What a delight to hang out with a family that's halfway through a marathon summer vacation who ... like each other!! I had a terrific time talking to Bowen around the campfire, seeing Kate create neat drawings under the juniper trees, and watching the truly precision drill that is a Bill and Dana camp take-down. Love you all.

Wow, the photos are gorgeous! I kept thinking, could i have done this? Well, maybe stopping with Bo would have been the best option for me, too. What a beautiful place, molded by all the passersby over a hundred years.

It's been great delight to read your entries and see photos! I remember from our family's trip summer of 1964, Bryce Canyon seemed to me to be the most spectacular. Of course we didn't go to the Grand Canyon, but anyway, what a great choice for a little horse trek. I couldn't believe the story about the river rafting. Gosh, so glad you all survived! I keep thinking about Bo and Kate, and how this will mark their (your) growing up years with a clear division of before and after in a priceless way. Sending love from Chengdu, diane

Lack-a-popes and Jackalopes
Hey Arnim-Hucks clan, don't forget to keep your bone-dry eyes peeled for the other fauna of the ever-changing desert: toad-runners, which can be heard at dusk politely belching, and drag-pies - loud camp birds that steal drying underwear for camouflage. Wish I were there! - Jill

Heading east of Cody, Wy
We of small world fame headed east after Cody and saw the Big Horn Canyon and then into Rapid City. Arriving later we took in the Mt Rushmore evening "lighting ceremony". The park ranger took a social studies twist on Rushmore and we had a serving your country talk and a president trivia venue. I guess Rushmore is the highest piont heading east until the Alps. Yesterday all day in MN was Peter's Birthday with 2 cakes, we also played at a water slide in Maple Grove very nice for the kids. Today we are going to St Paul for the Pompeii exhibit. Always nice to re-educate the earthquake message for those of us living on the Ring of Fire. Stay safe Betty B

Yellowstone rules
Isn't Yellowstone great? Seems as though it would be overrated, but my experience there negated that idea. What an incredible park. Glad to hear that your travels are going well.

Lurch!
Coming up with a name for your transportation is a very good omen! All good adventures have a ship/vehicle with a name. Yayy!

Laughed till it hurt !
Why didn't you tell us that The Driver can write so well !! We laughed so hard over your Shortcut comments. Keep it up !! Better luck navigating, dear ones. Do you get regular E-mails? It's getting really hot here, but you've got us beat. Don't light matches! People start whining if it gets over 75*, thanks to Straits breeze, it's perfect. Luv from the San Juan two.

Rockhound rights!
Hey Hucks, how dare you say that that portion of rock-strewn reality is known only to prospectors, hunters and other unworthies? No doubt there were many subtle signs of rockhound infestation along that stretch, like funny small mounds of turned earth, odd maps drawn into the sandstone, and secret rockhound messages such as boots turned upside-down on fence posts. I see I have much work to do with you flatlanders. White Mountains or bust!

MapQuest?
Sounds like your cartographer came to AAA from MapQuest. Either that or he/she has a well developed sense of humor... MH

Make room for us!
If we only bring tooth brushes, can we come too? Good idea to take pix of the pristine interior. Will it be recognizable in 2 days? Bon voyage from the home folks!!
