Paris is awesome. I still felt a bit disoriented this time but as it was my 3rd time things are starting to fall into place. I think because I have been to so many places now my geography is all a bit messed up. Anyhoo I have never been able to tell right from left bank and what is on which, but this time came up with a very clever trick - Left Bank starts whith the letter L which is where the Latin Quarter is too. Clever, huh? I finally arrived in Paris after a bit of a trek (bus, 2 trains, TGV, 2 metro lines) and found the hostel. Mije is a collection of hostels that used to be collegs & they are now very central in Paris. By very central I meant ... read more

Its been a while since I last wrote. I have been on a cycling tour in the Loire Valley which was awesome!! Very glad I did this instead of hiking. The countryside goes by much faster and you create your own breeze! Plus there are so many little roads to ride on & things to see. I stopped in Tours to buy bike supplies eg a helmet, riding gloves & a gel seat to protect my ass........am glad I did this as it was either this or those horrible nappy bike shorts, which I can now understands the purpose of!! As it was Bastille Day I tried to finde the cemebrations in Tours before I left. The parade I found them setting up for the day prior had finished by about 10am and the town ... read more

Ok, so lets get it over and done with early - I love Prague!!! I had been really looking ofrward to these few days and it has lived up to my expectations. I love the interesting history, beautiful architecture and of course the food!! The train ride again was quite enjoyable, passport control got on quite soon after I left Vienna and put another stamp in the passport - joy! It doesn't happen too much anymore. I was entertained again by fields and fields of sunflowers going by and there were 2 sweet Korean girls in the train carriage with me, one of whom gave me a Korea bookmark when we arrived - cute! I jumped off the train ready to treat myself to a taxi and went to ask for info at the train ... read more

So I arrived in Venice after a great train ride. I really don´t mind trains and it is a great way of catching up on reading, journal, postcards etc. This one was particularly enjoyable as it was short, plus all of the sunflowers are out. The last time I was in Italy it was too late for sunflowers (they were all dead & black, not nice) and this time we were too early. However I got my fill of fields of sunflowers in Austria!! Found the hostel ok and it is NOICE. Its a Wombats one, they have 2 here and one in Berlin & Munich. This is the newest one and it has everything a backpacker could want. Small dorms (4 beds), huge lockers, proper showers (eg no detachable head), hairdryers, and even the ... read more

I wasnt sure where to go after Ljublijana and had tentatively pencilled in Budapest. After speaking with people who had been there I have decided it needs at least 4 days to do it justice and after consulting with friends (thanks Anna et al!) decided to come to Salzburg. After a 5 hour train ride from Ljublijana I arrived in Salzburg. I found my hostel ok and got changed to head into town, in search of my first experience. The first thing I noticed was the horses and the smell - Salzburg has horse drawn carts and while it seems like a good idea there's nothing worse I could think of than sitting behind a horse that stinks and paying for it!! (romantic, aren't I?). Salzburg is really charming tho and I really enjoyed walking ... read more

Wow, Slovenia is a very interesting country. I've learnt a lot in a few days and I can contribute it to my hot guide Yann when I did the walking tour! Amazing what looks can do to my interest levels. I think more and more people are taking an interest in this country. Its still nowhere near as overrun with tourists as Italy but I did run into quite a few foreigners. So heres a bit os a history lesson....Slovenia became an independent country from the former Yugoslavia in 1991 and have an interesting history. They have basically been plundered by any of the large empires in Europe at saome stage or another so have many different influences. They thankfully started using the Euro this year, a fact which I only realised just before getting ... read more

After leaving our boat crew in Split we jumped on the bus to Plitvice National Park. After 7 days of lying around and eating & not doing very much we were keen to get some hiking in and have a change of scenery. Plitvice is known for its beautiful waterfalls and can be done in a day trip but I'm very glad we stayed 3 nights. We arrived in Plitvice quite late in the evening and were pleased to find our hotel was in a beautiful location on the edge of the national park and had a large room, bathroom etc. It was very 70's though, and we wondered whether it was built in the 70's or designed in this way. I suspect the latter!! The next day we set out for a 3-4 hour ... read more

After 3 nights in zadar we caught a bus to Split to jump onto our boat to sail around the Croatian coast for 7 days and nights. After 3 days in Zadar we hadn't heard many Australian accents (there were many Germans there) and were surprised that as soon as we arrived in Split everyone seemed to be australian and jumping on or off boats! It must be the latest Aussie thing to do. We had no idea what to expect of our boat but what we were hoping for was a boat of friendly people who were up for a relaxing trip and maybe a bit of going out at night. We were put on a boat called the Penelopa and the average age was about 21! The bar opened around midday and everyone ... read more

Well it's been a while between blog entries! I've been out of touch as cruising the Croatian coast & islands for 7 days & then heading to a national park so a little out of touch.... My last blog entry finished with us arriving in Zadar. I was still quite ill from the bout of food poisoning I picked up in Venice and so spend the first day or so recuperating in our hotel in Zadar. After the dive we stayed in in Venice, this one had air con, mini bar, big beds and a balcony with a view of amazing sunsets. It was a palace in comparison! Zadar isn't that well known and to be honest we may not have gone there had the ferry not arrived there from Venice. However, there is heaps ... read more

Ah Venezia....my favourite place the last time I came to Italy and pretty close the second time also! I don't know what it is about this place, it's certainly not the millions of pigeons in St Marks Square, the American tourists or the exorbinant prices... I think it's that Venezia has real class!! People dress up here and are stylish. It's easy to get around on foot and quieter than other large cities as there is no traffic. It's also the scenerey - getting lost in the little backstreets and finding gorgeous squares and buildings. It's also been warm and sunny here which makes it easier to love! I parted ways with Robyn & Dan for 24 hours when we arrived. We'd been together for almost 2 weeks so we thought it was best they ... read more
