The journey from Belize to Guatemala was an easy and interesting one. We caught the water ferry from Caye Caulker to Belize City and jumped on a bus bound for Flores in Guatemala. The bus was 'air conditioned' ie all windows open which actually made it surprisingly cool and there weren´t many people on it so we could spread out. Good news as it was really uncomfortable! We crossed the border with no issues - this was my first land border crossing, the previous one being done via ferry. We hopped off the bus at the Belizean border, walked through and got our passports stamped and paid our exit fee, then walked across the border into Guatemala and back on the bus. Almost immediately some differences were notable. The quality of the roads was shocking, and ... read more

Let's get straight to the point - I loved Belize! I can't say I've seen alot, but Cay Caulker, a small island off Belize City was paradise. The streets are sand, crabs regularly cross the road at night, and local transport is golf buggies. You can walk from one end to the other in half and hour and see the sun rise and set while sitting in the same spot. The locals are incredibly relaxed, so you have to order your food an hour before you want it, and be patient with processes for getting things done. All of this added up, together with some phenomenal diving on the worlds second largest reef, and I walked away incredibly relaxed and very sorry I couldn't stay longer. It was a long day's travel to arrive from Mexico. ... read more

Magical Tulum

Tulum is gorgeous. An hour south of the craziness and American- ness of Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and you have a stunning strip of white, fine sand and clear waters, and rustic, noffensive cabana accommodation lining its shores. Before I went out to the beach I decided to check into a hostel for the first night of being in Tulum. I had wanted to book a cabana if Steve had come with me, but thought it a bit excessive booking one for myself. I booked a dorm bed in a 4 bed dorm and have decided I am too old for this now! It wasn't awful, but I just like my own space and to not have to deal with anyone else! I shared with only one other girl, a german girl called Stefanie, and ... read more

I wasnt sure whether to call this ´Cruise Ship Cozumel´but decided against it as it has so much more going for it. But truth be told, Cozumel is very American, full of Americans, either on holiday or let off from a cruise ship for the day. We saw a few bars with Americans drinking massive cocktails with balloon animal hats. Gave me an idea of what the Mayan Riviera is like on spring break and I don´t want to be here! Apart from this, Cozumel is beautiful regardless. We booked a budget hotel in the centre of town which was 50 metres from the beach, but they didnt say that you dont really swim at this beach! You have to go further out of town and then you can find some stunning places to stay. A ... read more

We took an overnight bus from Merida to Palenque. Not a "first class" bus with fully reclinable seats, but comfy nonetheless as it was fairly empty and easy to stretch out. Palenque isnt too far from Merida but the journey was slowed due to very bad roads, and these crazy speed bumps everywhere which slows vehicles down considerably. On arrival in Palenque we tried to book a hotel but to no avail. I had emailed them and called them and I should have known from this the service wouldnt be great! However Maya Bell got a great write up in Lonely Planet, so we took a taxi there and checked into a room. Thankfully once again it was empty so checking in at 11am was fine. The hotel is set in the jungle and not far ... read more

It has taken me a little while to write but that's because Mexico is awesome so far and we've been to busy eating, drinking and exploring to sit down for a period of time. We arrived in Cancun on 22nd September after a loooong 10 hour flight. I am used to medium haul flights due to returning to Sydney regularly however this one left at 10am so I was wide awake. Its saving grace was that it was super empty and the BA staff tried to ply us with alcohol as they were bored. Needless to say it worked and there was no more vodka on the plane by the time we got off! Cancun was hot and steamy and our hotel was in the centre of town. It was an eco hotel and ok but ... read more

Last weekend I went to visit Anni for the weekend in Newbury. It was lovely to get out of London for the weekend and take in some of the countryside. The colours of the autumn trees and landscape are beautiful at the moment and its one of the things I love about England - the clearly defined seasons, which we don't really experience in Sydney. It's not too cold yet either which is nice - on average about 18 during the day. I caught the train up on Friday night and we went out with a bunch of Vodafone people for drinks and dinner. Vodafone is headquartered in Newbury and I know quite a few Aussies who have gone to work there, as well as people from HQ who I have worked on projects with previously ... read more

What a whirlwind it has been! I will warn you in advance that this blog is rather long - loads to catch you up on! So grab a cuppa and get comfy…. I arrived in London on 14th September after an amazing 5 month trip. I keep forgetting I have travelled for so long - must get some photos out to remind me!After I arrived in London I headed to Clapham Junction to stay with Robyn. She was at work so Jess met me at her place and we got ready to go out for drinks and to watch the England v South Africa game at the pub. It was a great night with a lot of familiar Sydney faces (including Ros who also arrived recently with her boyfriend Mark) and some new London faces also. ... read more

Mallorca was the last stop on my big tour of Europe. I flew from Lisbon to meet up with Mum and Eric (who had) flown in from Madrid) and James (who had flown from London). They picked me up from the airport in our hire car and we had a family reunion and loads to catch up on from Mum & Eric's tour. We stayed in Port d'Andratx which is about 40 mins out of Palma, in the south western corner of the island. I was really impressed - I had feared that after seeing Costa Brava that Mallorca would be really touristy and full of Brits on package holiday but it either isnt like that, or we chose a good area to stay!! I think being a port a lot of people choose not to ... read more

Again, Cascais is a day trip you can do from Lisbon but I am glad I spent 3 days here. The hostel I have stayed in is unrteal and I would rank it amongst my top hostels in Europe. Along with having a room with ensuite, a great lounge room with DVD and cable telly (telly in English is such a bonus when travelling!), great kitchen and eating area and a pool complete with sun lounges, the mix of people there is really nice. I have thoroughly enjoyed staying there, altho I have been in a mixed dorm and last night it was me with 4 boys!! A bit stinky but thank goodness there was no snoring. As I have realised I am running out of money also I have been cooking (yes, I have manged ... read more
