For those of you who noticed, the word EXCERPT was spelled incorrectly in the title of this entry. Don't ever hesitate to correct my spelling, especially when the typo is in my title. thanks, Hans

Thanks man! I'll keep that in mind. Science was always fun. It's just that some horrible 9th grade biology teacher makes everyone memorize the creb cycle and then it becomes less fun.

Forget Science! - From:
Hans, funny stuff buddy! Keep it coming. BTW, you may want to consider becoming a writer instead of pursuing science. Or perhaps you could become the funniest scientific writer of our time!!! Making science fun...what a concept! Either way, I think you should factor it in there somewhere. Take care, Dave

Imran's Comment - From:
I got a comment from a fellow blogger named (or nicknamed) Imran and I accidentally deleted it. This was not an act of censorship it was merely a slip of the touch pad. The gist of his comment was the I should not be placing a pox on "mother Asia" just because I ate some hot food. He further explained that my understanding of hotness is relative to my culinary upbringing. I do not disagree on any particular point. Far be it from me to seriously curse an entire continent. And even if I did, I think one as big as Asia would survive untainted by my misguided words. I suppose that my last two blog entries could be interpreted as overly negative now that I read them again. My only excuse is that if you spend a month anywhere you'll find something to be negative about. That might just be my cynical nature. I think Imran misinterpreted my words as a diatribe against Bengali food. He couldn't be more wrong. I love hot food. However, it is not, as a rule, the most pleasant food to throw up. I suggest Imran spend a sleepless night purging the contents of his stomach and get back to me on the whole hot is relative issue. Until then I hope he can develop a better appreciation of hyperbole and ironic humor. No hard feelings. -Hans

Yup, Guam. - From:
Reenie - I lived there for 6 months, but met Pascal when I went back for a visit and an island-hopping trip through Micronesia. Guam has a grungy kind of charm, but mostly I didn't like living there.

WOW - From:
You are too self-critical - your photos are marvelous. I recently drowned my digital camera and needed to buy a new one - it's a piece of junk, but gets the job done, even if it's a poor job. I bought it at WalMart for $88. :) Anyway, I liked your phrase: *I prefer that over superficial exuberance anyway.* When I was in Ireland about 9 months after 9/11 I was greeted with lavish appreciation. I think I was the only tourist brave enough to fly. :( The Emerald Isle was nearly barren of visitors. The economy took a heavy hit. I suspect the Irish are renowned for graciousness, but hindsight, I think they were slathering it on rather thick that year - from shear appreciation for my tourist dollars/euros.

Guam? - From:
You met on the island of Guam? My uncle was stationed there during WWII - he's a dentist. He and my aunt and 2 children. Did you like Guam? My aunt has romantic notions of the time they were there but I get the impression that Guam hasn't aged well. In lieu of revisiting Guam, my aunt & uncle visited Roatan and ended up building a home there, which they used as a getaway for about 10 yeras and then sold.

Curious - From:
It's a fascinating story, I found myself reading the other blog postings back to the journey's beginning. As someone who has spent some time in Guanacaste, including Brasilito and Liberia, I couldn't help wondering how you chose to live here, found your cottage and the school for Kiley and Carter? I agree with an earlier poster, you do have a talent for interesting writing. This year and next year I spend the winter at a cottage in the jungle near the Southwestern end of the Nicoya Peninsula. Best of luck with the adventure.

Hey, you added to this post! No fair! Make a new one! :) I have to say I was a bit worried about you with the creamer. Moving to a country you've never visited - nope. Creamer situation - a little bit! Although I will be disappointed if you live in the coffee mecca for too long without weaning yourself off of (down a little??) 40 splendas and 1/2 cup of creamer per cup. My prediction, heard it here first folks: Spanish speaking, black coffee drinking surfer.

I really was laughing out loud as I caught up on your travels! I'm glad you are there safe (although taveling with convicts is not advisable) and sound. I am also glad to see that roughing it includes a golf course out back... hah! TACO BELL... I can't believe it! I too have a sick little one with a big fat lip =( She was a trooper for her b-day party (she looks like she was in a brawl) but she is not feeling well and only slept about 2 hours last night. I hope tonight is better or I might wreck my car while working tomorrow. Have so much fun and good luck car shopping!
