Tea Train...
We had similar difficulties getting tickets on the train. We didn't have children but we did have huge bags so 3rd class proved too difficult. We ended up riding local buses from Colombo to Ella and then took trains for the return trip as tickets were easily available. The buses didn't have the views the train did but they were cheaper and pretty easy to ride. Too be honest the train was not as much fun for us as it was made out to be. Too crowded, too hot and too slow. It seemed most after the initial excitement of being underway, people mostly drifted off to sleep. Glad you guys got on and had a good adventure!

Temple of the Tooth
Excellent call on not taking the kids to the Temple of the Tooth, especially at prayer time. We barely coped with the crush of humanity, so I don't think the kids would have enjoyed it at all. Definitely worth experiencing at some point though, even if just for the unique Kandyan architecture. We struggled with finding eateries around the lake too... with so many people visiting the Temple, I thought there would have been heaps of restaurants and street stalls in the vicinity! I share Daniel and Millie's love for Sri Lankan fried noodles :)

Temple of the Tooth
Exactly our thoughts! With so many people around, you'd think there'd be plenty of eateries around. The kids were addicted to noodles! So good! :) I got addicted to curries and that incredible coconut sambol! Yum! Thankfully our taste buds got used to the heat in Sri Lankan dishes in no time at all and we could fully enjoy them. Loved the food! Temple of the Tooth next time for sure! Would love to go back to Sri Lanka and do a bigger loop around the country. One day :)

Traveling with Children
The two of you are great examples of how families can travel. You really have it figure out. Sorry you missed the elephant bath.

Travelling with Children
I wouldn't go as far as to say we have it all figured out... as there is always room for improvement. But we're slowly getting there, learning from our mistakes. Still don't know how we managed to miss the elephant bathing... next time!

Sri Lanka
Glad you made it safely with the kids and all the equipment. A nice balance of exploring and chilling.

Fishy business!
I'm very curious that you didn't mention the intense stench of the fish drying in the heat! :( Or maybe you are much hardier in that department than I am... because oh my goodness, it was *almost* unbearable. Looking forward to following the rest of your trip on the island :)

Fishy business!
To be honest I can't really remember the stench which is strange as my nose is quite sensitive... Too many things to concentrate on I guess - the heat, sweaty and very wriggly baby, trying not to drop camera in fish guts, not stepping in fish guts... I think I might have just blocked the rest... ;) Thanks for reading :)

You are a brave soul! Traveling with children looks impossible, but you make it sound easy. Sri Lanka will be a challenge...just like the spicy food, as you found out. Negombo is just that, a gateway. I know You will really enjoy Kandy.

I'm not as brave as you may think. Travelling with kids sometimes feels easier than the normal day-to-day life. Always something new around, you buy food instead of making it, no chores to do... Routine is a killer! ;) We did this trip half a year ago... time flies! And we absolutely loved Sri Lanka! Hoping to catch up with blogging eventually... Thanks for your comment Andrea :)

Thank you so much for your wonderful description of a Polish Christmas...
especially the food. My wife Linda is partly Polish...from Krakow...and she also makes some of the dishes. I love perogies, especially. I hope to see more posts from you on your life in New Zealand.
