We started the day by packing our bags, as we have to head to the airport early (10am) and knew we wouldn't want to pack tonight. Many things are closed on Sundays, but most museums are free on the first Sunday of the month, so we had a choice of going to overcrowded museums or wandering around and hoping things were open. We walked (again with the walking...we're averaging 10kms a day or more) over to the Latin Quarter. We found lots of lovely shops, but they were all closed so we window shopped. We had a terrible lunch and then walked around. We walked to the Pantheon, looked around inside, and went in the Crypt (it's a bit creepy if you think about it). Then we walked back to the hotel. Home tomorrow...... read more

I woke up feeling almost 100% finally. That's the best start to today. We started out this morning by wandering over to the Eiffel Tower. We came across a market, and stopped there and looked at lovely stuff (and saw a ton of seafood). When we got to the Tower, there was a ridiculously huge crowd of people lined up to get tickets. The sun was already beating down and there was no shade, so we decided not to go to up the Tower. We stopped for ice cream, then found ourselves on Champs Elysees, but at a different spot then the other day, right near the Arc de Triomphe. After lunch, we decided to go up the Arc, and take a look from there. The only option was to walk up, which wasn't bad, but ... read more

Wow, I have not been having good luck getting this entry posted. First I couldn't post due to a location, then I lost all of the pictures I picked out for uploading and now my original text for this blog post is gone. Ugh. Oh well, moving on to the original topic at hand, that is, Days 13 & 14... The weather here has been gorgeous. 30°C and sunny every day. And it's supposed to stay that way until we leave. Fabulous! On Thursday, we walked over to the Jardin du Luxembourg, which was full of beautiful green space. We walked around a bit, sat by a lovely pond and then walked to Notre Dame. Notre Dame is a lovely church, but after Westminister Abbey, just not quite as good. Still it was quite a sight ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Warwickshire » Stratford-upon-Avon September 28th 2011

Yesterday was spent on a tour of the English countryside, lunch at the Cotswolds and a short stop in the afternoon at Stratford-upon-Avon (aka Shakespeare's home). The countryside was cute, however we didn't spend enough time in Stratford. I don't have much to say about it, so I'll just post a few pictures. We travelled by Eurostar (aka the train that goes under the English Tunnel) to Paris, which was actually quite nice. The seats were comfy and the headrest comes around your head which was useful for a nap. Paris seems nice so far, although we didn't do much due to the early morning. My mom did walk to Church of Invalides, where Napoleon Bonaparte is buried, while I napped. My initial, brief impression of the City is that it is quite nice and so ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » London City September 26th 2011

Alright, I guess I should play catch-up for the last few days. I'd like to update every day, but by the time we get back to the hotel, I'm usually exhausted and ready for bed. We travelled by Virgin Train to London on Friday. I had heard Virgin trains were fantastic, but unfortunately I wasn't overly impressed. I don't really have a complaint, it was fine, but I was under the impression there was free wi-fi which there wasn't. My Kindle wasn't cooperating (a dead battery as it turned out), so I would have liked wi-fi to keep myself occupied. Unfortunately, the wifi wasn't available at all, even paid. After our arrival, we walked over to Buckingham Palace and around some of it. It's a lot bigger then I had imagined. We saw the Wellington monument ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater Manchester » Oldham September 22nd 2011

A short entry for today, only because I have a few pictures to share, or I would have skipped. We spent today with family in the Manchester area. I got to meet second and third cousins (i.e. my mom's cousin's and their children) and saw my great-aunt who I haven't seen in many years. It was quite a nice day, I enjoyed myself. I saw cow horses (see picture) and we went to this nice pub next to a neat looking church for a chat. Dinner was at an Italian restaurant with good food and some birthday embarassment. In this case, a loud announcement, music and a big scene. It was kinda fun when it was over!... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » The Highlands September 21st 2011

The last three days were spent with no wi-fi, but that allows for me to summarize the tour of Scotland in one nice post. So yes, onto a brief summary of our three day tour. Brief because I'm sleepy and needing to get to bed. We took a bus tour from Edinburgh up to the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands. We saw lots of castles, most from the outside, but one from the inside (and I think i'm getting castle'd-out and we haven't gotten to London yet!). We saw many Lochs, including Loch Lomand and yes Loch Ness. There were lots of sheep and some Hairy Coos which were very cute. We saw the Old Man of Storr, where legend has it a fairy turned a man to stone (okay there's more to it, ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Midlothian » Edinburgh September 18th 2011

We did the Hop On/Off tour bus thing today. We went to Edinburgh Castle, and picked up some souveniers. With a little effort, I discovered my family clan. I'd like to get a scarf with the family tartan but they only come in wool which I can't stand on my skin, so I settled on a clan sword pin and keychain. Edinburgh castle was nice, a bit different from what I expected. ... read more
