Pai and Yoga

Published: June 11th 2007Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Pai

How I found about this heavenly spot? ....Yoga has once again lead me to a most beautiful stay. This time it is not in India and called Bangalore but it is Thailand and called Pai. When doing research on internet I found lots of different Yoga places, but most did not seem to catch my senses, it was only when I found the Spa Exotic Home Stay in Pai, way up north in Thailand, situated in the jungle away hustle and bustle. What convinced me was the combination of new Yoga postures - Thai ones called hermit postures, vegetarian food, a luxury room with a hot tub pumping from a local hot spring, a mineral pool and thai massage. All in all it was different than I thought as I was again the only person ... read more

Coming back to Thailand was somewhat of a difficult task as explained in the last travelblog. However, now that I am used to being transported not only for hours but also with all different kinds of transportation means I have developed a rough skin. I would compare it with a Koala Bear, who sleeps 80% of its life time. Grh..... The north of Thailand, were I crossed the boarder is a lot more hilly and green than the opposite site in the south. However, coming from Laos a strict line from a third world country to a touristy country was visible. Thailands north is well populated, families have stone houses, shop after shop passed our view and local people looked a lot more westernised. Back to Real Asia - Laos

Published: May 30th 2007Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane

As so many things in Thailand, the bus journey from Bangkok to Laos, Vientiane was an easy ride compared to my past experiences in Malaysia - I had a front seat on the top of a double decker bus, and imagine what a luxury, two seats! After the border checks and change from a comfortable aircon bus to a small, pretty old and little taken care off bus, I arrived in the capital of Laos Vientiane at 9 am. Well, first impression is, for a capital, especially after Bangkok, Vientiane has more of a town feel to it. Imagine how the rest of the country will be :) A peaceful, undeveloped Asian heaven. Now I feel that I have arrived in Asia. Thailand often seemed too much tourist orientated, forgetting to keep its cultural highlights ... read more

Bangkok for both my best friend Grit from Berlin, who visited me for 10 days and for me - was a city of shopping, hurting feet, constant sweating, our hotel pool, daily tailor meetings and temples. It think this sums up our experience the best. After we had spend 2 days on the beach in Hua Hin south of Bangkok on the East coast, we decided it is about time to head towards Bangkok to empty our money pockets and to experience the famous Asian capital. Hua Hin was unexpectedly touristy, the city which got famous due to the Thai Kings summer residence. Thus it started to become a popular local holiday area, especially from Bangkok as it is only a 3 hour bus ride away. We enjoyed already here evening markets, local food and ... read more

Ko Samui and Ko Tao

Published: May 15th 2007Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui

Finally I have arrived at the famous Ko Samui island, which is supposed to be a medium between the very touristy Phuket and Phi Phi and the very quiet Pan Nhgan. I am sure all these exotic names will not tell you much, but I can assure you after being a few weeks here, the Thai geography is very easy. The names sound like childrens expressions, that they might use when playing with their cars or dolls. Hey miss barby this is your phi phi island, where you can enjoy some sun and go for a ride with ken in his new ferrari... Ko Samui Enough of those stories, lets come back to the islands of my choice. After a 1 3/4 hour of ferry ride, already being shipped with lots of tourists I arrived ... read more

I am in Thailand! The country I have heard so many nice stories about making me keen to form my own opinion and experiences. The first point of destination is Krabi, which I reached after a long bus ride and an empty stomach. Krabi This not very inviting city due to its dirty buidlings, little structure and ugly streets, however serves as a great hob. Firstly as it is located on the water, from where boats to the Phi Phi islands and other small islands part from and secondly as it offers a great location to explore the country side also. Thus I took a room for a few nights to explore the area. The Cha Guesthouse was as usual a family business with all family members, from crying babies to the old grandma smiling ... read more

Since Singapore 24 days have passed, 7 places have been visited and Thailand been planned. Originally I thought to stay around 2 weeks and to move on to more interesting places, now that I have spend (with Penang, before Australia) 3 weeks in this country I feel, that I still have a lot more to explore, which makes me leave with a partly unsatisfied feeling. However, the country has shown a lot of beauty, cultural and religious understanding and many interesting people, teaching me a different life style (just today I talked to 2 lively and very chatty young Malay girls, whilst eating sushi in a restaurant - uh I always wanted to eat in one of those sushi bars, when the food rolls by in front of your eyes). One of them to be ... read more

Lone Beach

Published: April 22nd 2007Asia » Malaysia » Perak » Pulau Pangkor

After having seen bustling cities, with its neverending noise and business and having seen highlands of jungle and farming it was just natural to head now to the beach. I was recommended to go to Pulau Pangkor, the beautiful island as the translation sais, which is a favourite with the locals. It is a small island with one road of 20km circling the island. Molli (a newly found kung fu friend) describes Pulau Pangkor very well in saying that is the most beautiful but also ugliest island that she has seen. I still can not make up my mind whether I like it or not. It has definitely hidden beauties and small dirty but still charming villages. I spend 4 days on Pulau Pangkor, predominantely going sunbathing, swimming and snorkeling. I have actually seen parot ... read more

Cameron Highlands

Published: April 20th 2007Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Tanah Rata

The Bus ride Besides being booked onto the wrong bus (not 24 but 36 seater) and being sent from one unknowladgable person to the next I got onto the bus to Cameron Highlands which is a 4 1/2 hour bus ride (was told 3 1/2) away from Kuala Lumpur. I was proud to achieve this in Europe daily task, which develops in the busy Kuala Lumpur Busstation to an unforgettable experience. Stalls offering fresh fruit cut in bite-sized pieces (guess with little teeth it is difficult to bite from a fruit) such as Mango, Pineapple, Apple and other fruits I am not sure what they were such as a combination of a pear and apple, very juicy though. Everywhere you will find busy sales people from bus agents trying to sell you even a second ... read more

Melaka and Kuala Lumpur

Published: April 18th 2007Asia » Malaysia

Back in diverse Malaysia Malaysia's island Penang had captured on our last journey over 2 months ago our senses, offering with little hassle beautiful landscapes, jungle, sandy beaches, a bustling city, diverse cultures and religions living peacefully together. As Malaysians come from a number of different ethnic groups: Malays, Chinese, Indians and the mixes in between such as Chinese with a Malay women are called Baba-Nonyas. This complex but most harmoneous cultural make-up I compare to a pot with a whole, with continuous water splashing in. On every street corner, in every town or city we experienced new adventures. Melaka This old colonial town was a must to see, incorporating Dutch, English and Portuguese coloniasation. After Singapores clean and structured infrastructure, Melaka hit us with spicy, sweet, fishy and flowery smells, hectic streets (our taxi ... read more
