So we got to the smaller of the two Perhentians and unloaded into our little hut - only power coming from a generator switched on from 10am til 1pm, and 7pm til 7am. Not to worry, all our time was spent chilling on the porch or on the beach or snorkeling. We went for a trip around both of the islands for one of the days we were there, and swam with sharks, giant sea turtles and sting rays. Really hot weather and some of the friendliest hosts we have met yet ! These guys live the most chilled place in the world I think and it shows... No alcohol was readily available on the islands unless you went looking for it so it served as a bit of a detox for us too (well there ... read more
We flew to Bankok after going back to KL from the Perhentian Islands. Got to a hotel which we thought would be cheap but it was a bit more expensive than we were expecting. After sleeping in little wooden hut for a week though we thought we would splash out and enjoy some comfort !! Bangkok is pretty grimy an a few senses of the word, very touristy and lots of hassling going on from the stall owners and tuk tuk drivers. We took a walk down to the Grand Palace one day and also got a trip to nearby Chanthaburi to visit the Bridge Over the River Kwai and the adjoining War Cementry (very moving) and then onto the Tiger Temple (so touristy but awesome to get close to tigers like that !!)... read more
We got the sleeper train from Bangkok up to Chiang Mai and Promptly had the worst nights sleep ever !! Thanks to a rather large American dude (at least he got a quality nights kip in though !) We arrived in Chiang Mai and were taken to our guest house for the night. That night we had a meeting with the guys who were taking us into the mountains around the (small) city and to visit the tribes who live in the isolated village found there. The guides both grew up in these villages themselves and this really helped our experience in the jungle, learning about the way they use their surroundings and also how the villagers live their day to day lives. (They also cooked the meanest food - definitely the best we have had ... read more
It's nearly been a week since we last said anything to you guys so thought we should check in! From Lovina we headed down the coast and went to Tulamben (which I, tiff still cannot say without getting it wrong). Tulamben is absolutely tiny, and there was just one restaurant. We stayed in some bungalows owned by the diving school, got kept up half the night by random dogs woofing- I believe the technical term is barking, and some bloody roosters crowing, from about 2am onwards. Anyway the next morning we got up, donned our rather attractive wet suits and headed to the swimming pool. We did about 20 mins in the pool, doing the basics and then we left the dive school and walked over the road and into the sea. We did three dives ... read more
We got here all good just were really tired- thats what 4 hours sleep in 72 hours does to you though I suppose! The flight to hong kong was great and I def want pampering on all flights in the future! Skinner watched a film called 7 pounds and cried.... Hong Kong is probably the hottest place we have ever been, and it is just as hot at night as in the day ! We Looked around the city and markets and then took a ferry to the other side of the water at sunset. As the sun went the skyline was really stunning with the bright lights of the skyscrapers (actually massive!!) in front of the dark mountains behind. Shame the Symphony of Light didnt make it even better, but the view stood for itself... ... read more
