| 1st November 2009 Andy Horsman | Reply to Hannah - From: Breathless In Tibet Hi Hannah, thanks for your message. I needed a Tibet Travel Permit to enter Tibet, which I had to buy in Chengdu (can't remember how much this was, I'm afraid). I then had to show this permit to travel to the monasteries I mention in my blog - I hired a driver with a Land Cruiser for this part of the trip. Hope this helps. Would be great to hear about your trip. Cheers, Andy |
| 31st October 2009 Andy Horsman | Reply to Babel - From: I've Done It - UK To Oz Overland! Thanks, Babel - it was a fantastic experience |
| 29th October 2009 Hannah | No Permit??? - From: Breathless In Tibet How did you manage to travel throught Tibet on public buses? I thought this was illegal for foreigners? Did you have a permit? I was trying for the no planes rule, but got screwed over here cos I din't want to fork out for a permit and travel in a group. Unfortunately it was cheaper to fly over Tibet. Curious to hear how you did it. |
| 21st October 2009 Babel | wow ;) - From: I've Done It - UK To Oz Overland! very exciting :) |

| 9th June 2007 Roger from NZ | Fun on the Baltrum Trader - From: I've Done It - UK To Oz Overland! Well done Andrew. I boarded the Baltrum Trader in Sydney on the 22nd of March obviously just after your voyage. I did the round trip of 18,000 KM, returning to Sydney on the 19th of April. I enjoyed my time with same crew, spending a lot of time in the officers mess with Mario and Shrek. I got to see the BIG seas accross the great Australian bight. We got into some heavy rolling with seas of up to 11 meters, great fun. |

You'll have to have a word with Danielle, that photo she took of you at Batu Caves (Pic 18) is a bit blurred..... |

| 15th February 2007 Francis | Hello - From: Living It Up In Laos It has been a long time since I left a message on your blog. Usually enough time to skim over the text and look at the photos (loving them as always). You know yourself - not supposed to be browsing the net. Anyway they are all away out to lunch today here so... How are you and Dani keeping? Edinburgh going well here. Quiet at the min but was kinda hectic for a period as we had visitors for the last two weekends and Will just left this morning. Claire (who is on her mid-term) and Will have been corrupting me all week with keeping me up late and drinking beer (secretly welcomed). Anyway I hope all is well in the unrealistic globetrotting world. Hi to Dani. Any more news on the bigger boat trip? |

| 3rd January 2007 Scott | - From: Trekking Tiger Leaping Gorge And Northern Laos Thanks for the info Andy, much appreciated! |
| 3rd January 2007 Andy Horsman | Reply to Scott - From: Trekking Tiger Leaping Gorge And Northern Laos Hi Scott - thanks for your msg - I'm afraid I can't remember the name of the trekking company in Muang Sing - but it's very easy to find as it's on the main street of pretty much a 1 street town and is the largest trekking outfit. They're next to a company called Ecotrek or something similar. Very strict on responsible trekking, they charged $35 each for a party of 6 (max 8). If there are only 2 of you, it cost $47 approx. as cost obviously drops the more there are of you. This is for the 2 day trip. I'd recommend the 3 day trek tho as you cover the same distance in more time! Have a great time - I'm hoping to head back there now. Cheers, Andy |
| 3rd January 2007 Will | Getting Prepared for Thailand - From: Travels In Southern Viet Nam Andy - Browny was right there is no injury, you are just preparing the way for your time in Thailand by getting your legs shaved, the rest of the process to be performed when in the country |
| 3rd January 2007 Scott | - From: Trekking Tiger Leaping Gorge And Northern Laos Hi Andy Great read. I'm heading up that way in a few weeks and was inspired by your trek in Muang Sing. I want to do something similiar. Could you tell me how you organised the trek and how much it cost? Thanks very much. Cheers Mick |
| 2nd January 2007 Browny | You're back.... - From: Travels In Southern Viet Nam Andy, you're back. Was expecting a call with a ransom demand any minute there. You're most interesting blog so far for me, must have been the war and waves, but I feel I must pull you up on one point. Whether you'd had a crash helmet on or not I find it hard to believe that the wind would be "blowing in your hair" as you've only got a bit more than me. Also, I hadn't realised that there was a Great Vietnam Run - surely there's a reason for the feigned broken ankle. If you're on crutches let Danielle have my email and I'll give her some tips. Anyway, must dash. I'm off to buy a hat ;-) |
| 16th December 2006 Andy Horsman | Hi Ellen - From: Trekking Tiger Leaping Gorge And Northern Laos Hi! Thanks for your msg - glad you're liking the blog. | 17th November 2006 Mum | Shangri La - From: Travelling In Tibet Funny to think of you visiting somewhere that reminded you of Lost Horizon. That was such a good book wasn't it. When I think of how long it took me to get round to reading it and then I couldn't put it down. I see the Rasa Sayang in Penang (where we bought the book)has had a major facelift and is now a very swish resort hotel. I bet you don't get chocolate put on your pillow every night like we did there in the places you are staying at now! Love Mum |

It's just not the same without those mind-numbing spreadsheets is it? Still, I'm glad to hear your soldiering on and putting a brave face on it all ;-) I'd pay good money to see that TV clip, time to hit google.... LOL |

| 14th November 2006 Andy Horsman | Reply To Weggs - From: Breathless In Tibet Hi - sorry for the delay - I'm in Laos and there aren't many PCs! I met people travelling in Tibet that are doing lots of different trips and it's very easy to organise one yourself via a guesthouse. A trip to Mount Kailash would take 21 days, whilst another to the monastery towns of Shigatse, Gyantse and onto Everest Base Camp (then either onto Kathmandu or back to Lhasa) would be about a week. You'll need a few days in Lhasa to acclimatise to the altitude. Any more questions and drop me a message and I'll try to help. Next blog shold be uploaded in next few days.Cheers, Andy |
| 7th November 2006 Weggs | - From: Breathless In Tibet Loved reading your blog. We are planning a trip in 14 months and it was great to get someone elses views. How long do we need to spend in this part of the world? |

The weather here is great and set to last for several days but not as hot as Tomsk, if the website I looked at is correct. I am looking forward to your next blog. |

| 12th July 2006 Grandad | Murmansk - From: OMG, I'm in Russia! The account of your progress across the roof of the world has been both interesting and awesome, especially eating raw fish even if it was salmon! Several of our North Russia Club people did the trip from Murmansk, where they were stationed during the war, to Moscow and on the train they lived on corned beef and baked beans washed down with canned beer. They did get to know the name of the young lady attendant though and her age. But that's sailors for you. While in Moscow they visited the Bolshoi Theatre and saw "Swan Lake". The theatre was still looked after with loving care even in those terrible times. The offer to visit the Museum was intriguing, we hope that you were able to see the massive monument to "The defenders of the Arctic region" overlooking Kola inlet, it must be impressive even from a distance. We agree with your remarks regarding St Petersburg we only wish that we had more time to look around the place last year. Now that you are off to Siberia, I should be careful there as they say some years ago an asteroid went berserk and made a hole in the ground! Still it won't happen again - I shouldn't think so anyway! So bon voyage or whatever that is in Russian from Granny (babushka, grandad and Derek. |
