The winter was extremly cold, dozens died not only in Ukraine. When I walked by this place in the early morning, I saw a man covered with that paperboard, some people standing next to him. He had died the night before. Winter was almost over. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 53 Die of Cold in Ukraine (Article by Agence France-Presse 25jan2006) Kiev — Fifty-three people have died in Ukraine during the past 24 hours as a result of extreme cold, the health ministry said on Wednesday, bringing to at least 130 the number of deaths since temperatures plunged last week. At least 538 people have been hospitalised as a result of the cold, most of them suffering from frostbite and various stages of hypothermia, said the ministry. It was the largest number of people who had died during a single ... read more

Took the night train from Kiev to Kharkiv last night. Almost booked out, I could only get a 3rd class ticket called "platzkarty". You don't stay in compartments, rather a whole waggon is one single compartment. It wasn't bad at all (ok, the bed only fits for people shorter than 1.80m). I only wondered why no one told the old lady not to shout in her cell phone at 5.30, 6.15, 7.40 - then she finally got off the train and I got another hour of slepp. I went staight to Hotel Kharkiv. The only central hotel, located at a metro station at Svobody square, it seemed to be the best choice. But I should have been warned. LP reads: "Non-Russian speakers might have a hard time checking into the cheaper section." The hotel has two ... read more

Taking the night train from Kiev to Minsk last Friday, the Belarussian border guards first stamped my passport as their colleagues in other contries would have done. Because of the upcoming elections however, they didn't give me my passport back but probably called the capital. After some twenty minutes I was asked to leave the train with my lagguage (around midnight). Without any explanation they showed me a room where to spend the night. The timetable on the wall said, that there will be a train from Minsk back to Kiev at 3.36. Just in time, I got my papers back and was asked to leave the country again. ... Just went to Istanbul last weekend. Walking through the rainy city for two days, we got to see the basic tourists attractions: We started at the Galata Tower, where some say that you get a good view over the Bosphorus (at least when the weather is not as bad as it was). We decided that we don't pay 5 $ for seeing clowds. In general, prizes for students are quite high (all major sights 12 Turkish Lira, ca. 8 $ with no chance to get discount). Leaving Beyoglu, we crossed the bridge over the Golden Horn. On the bridge you can find dozens of fishermen at any time and weather. They take out their fishing rods every minute and get up to five fishes, which you can eat in the restaurants below the bridge. Later we ... read more
