Sadly, our trip has come to an end. We spent our last day today in Dublin, savoring the last few scones and coffees we could fit into our stomachs. I think it’s safe to say that we both put on a few pounds during the last few weeks - we have never eaten so much bacon or potatoes in our lives. We took advantage of our accommodations’ gym and started off the day with a quick workout, which felt oh-so-good…until we both collapsed afterwards. It’s amazing how out of shape you can get so quick, even when you are walking everywhere. We both said today that we wished we had pedometers with us during the entire trip - I think we walked more than 100 miles! After we finally got ourselves up and running (we both ... read more

Arriving in Dublin

Today marked another travel day - Galway to Dublin. We are on the final leg of our trip, as we are headed back to the good old U.S of A on Sunday. After leaving Eddie and Helen at our B&B in Galway, we hopped on the bus and slept the three hours to Dublin. We arrived in what seemed like “San Francisco times one hundred.” Hustle and bustle, dirty, loud, monumental buildings and statues, people whizzing by…it was not like Galway or Cork. There are about 15 different ways to cross an intersection in Dublin, and every one of them includes possibly getting hit by a car running a light. I had absolutely no idea where we were, so thank god Erica is good at reading maps. After checking into our hotel, we hit the pavement ... read more

We were told before we even got to Galway that you don’t go there for the sites - you go there for the people. So, Erica and I spent the entire day amongst the townies, shopping, eating, and going out to the pubs. We slept in late, as the past week has been spent been gallivanting around the island like crazy. Our B&B landlords Eddie and Helen, couldn’t understand why two girls in their 20’s would choose to go to bed before 1am (the night before), but we were “wrecked.” After some fuel (coffee, sausage, scones and eggs and more coffee), we shopped for hours! Shoes, handbags, dresses, souvenirs…it was so fun. I had died and gone to shoe and handbag heaven! As you can see in the photos, the shoe selection here is phenomenal. We ... read more

Today was a travel day for the most part, as we made our way sightseeing up the coast to eventually catch a train to Galway. We got up at 8am to pack our bags, clean up the room and have some breakfast. Kevin had texted us to see what time we were leaving so he could say goodbye, as he was out in the quarry working. We looked out the window and could see him driving his “Digger” around, so we texted him that we were leaving. Immediately, the digger claw started waving up and down, like it was, well, waving. It was absolutely hilarious. He then jumped off and came down to the house with Donal to say goodbye. They were great fun, and it was nice to meet some people our own age and ... read more

We did more today than most people do in a week of travel. We’re actually writing this blog later and just posting now, because we were so exhausted that we couldn’t write a word last night, except for a brief “hi” to our family and boyfriends. But… it’s good to be busy, and especially with a quick trip and so much to see. We woke up yesterday morning with anticipation that had been built up for 10 years. We were going to the farm. Both of us remember when Derry would talk about the farm when he coached Erica. He used to compare the mud to “slurry,” telling Erica that she was lucky to be diving (as a soccer goalkeeper) in mud and not “slurry.” We had no concept of what this “slurry” he spoke of ... read more

This morning Erica woke me up with “Wow, do you know what time it is?” It was almost 1pm - thank god, we needed it. We turned on our Irish cell phone to find several texts from Donal, asking when we were going to go workout and run around “the pitch!” The what? The “pitch,’ is the “field.” We were shocked that he still wanted to, considering the form he was in the night before. However, when we knocked on his door only 20 minutes later, he had already eaten a grease filled Irish breakfast and was ready to workout. I told him I wanted to go on a run, and asked if I’d be safe simply running along the roads and rolling hills. He pointed me to a loop I could run, that would take ... read more

Today we had our first “Irish Breakfast.” For those of you who are unaware, we’re not talking omelets or pancakes…or even simply sausage and fruit. A traditional Irish Breakfast consists of rashers (meaty bacon - the amount of meat was phenomenal), sausage and good old “Black Pudding.” Not to be confused with chocolate pudding, cocoa pudding, or even licorice pudding, “Black” Pudding is a pureed sausage, bacon and pig blood dish. Yes, you heard it right. Ruth wouldn’t tell us what was in it until after we tried it, so that alone tipped us off that something in it wasn’t a savory American choice. Neither of us were huge fans, but can’t knock it till you try it, right? The Irish are thanking us, since we definitely brought the sunny California weather with us. We have ... read more

Today we were up early to get a head start down to tour West Cork - highlights included Mizon Head, which is the most southern tip of Ireland. We were literally standing on the edge of the country. Only 200 miles of water away was France. I took off my shoes, rolled up my seven brand jeans (which btw, they don't really wear designer jeans in this country. Probably another reason why we stick out), and pranced in the Atlantic. To my knowledge, I hadn't ever swam in the Atlantic, so this was exciting for me. Erica collected sand for her old college roommate Ashley, who gathers sand together in a small sandbox from every place in the world that she can. Erica gladly filled up a ziplock. The weather today felt like home, which was ... read more

Today we took a trip down the Dingle Peninsula, which encompassed about eight different little villages. Dingle is known for it's famous live attraction of "Fungi the Dolphin." The story is, that Fungi is the only dolphin in the world that doesn't travel in a pod - he likes to fly solo. So, there is a small little boat cruise (I use the word "Cruise" lightly. Let's just say it fell along the lines of "champagne taste on a beer budget") that takes about 15-20 people out off the coast of Dingle to spot Fungi. If you don't see him, you get your money back (I'm not sure if that's entirely true, but I'm going with it). Erica and I spotted Fungi pretty soon into the trip, as he followed the wake of the boat and ... read more

We have arrived...we are in BalliDesmond which is part of Cork County (I think? I'm pretty sure....). We got in at 1pm...drove one hour with Derry back to the countryside and ate some traditional Irish potato stew, courtesy of Ruth. Air Lingus of course lost our luggage, so it is still in Dublin. Luckily we both have pretty heft carry on backpacks. I had my sleeping meds and my computer, that's all I really needed for one night. Our luggage is supposed to arrive in the morning. We spent the afternoon going with Ruth to the market - they call the shopping carts "trollies,", visiting with little baby Sive who is now 7 months old, taking a walk into the little downtown strip of BalliDesmond (which included a few pubs, a post office, a futbol field ... read more
