Asia » Philippines March 8th 2010

I love the Philippines. Is it a country free of political/environmental/socio-economic problems? Like everywhere else in the world, no. But something about the simultaneous cultural pluralism and pride in that culture, sanguine and tolerant population and overall impression of genuineness really appealed to me. Of course the beach, sunshine and fresh mangoes didn't hurt either! I began my week-long trip in Manila with two friends from Suzhou. Manila is known as a rough city but is also incredibly vibrant and has some very beautiful sites. Most people hate it, I loved it, although I was only there for a day. We went to Intramuros, the walled city from the period of Spanish colonization, the Jose Rizon memorial/museum, Rizon Park, and some fantastic art galleries. The Philippines has a very energetic modern art scene and I enjoyed ... read more

While most of you back home are getting into the romantical mood for vday, here in China most everyone is with their families, eating dumplings and getting money in red envelopes. The era of the ox is over and today officially marks the beginning of the Year of the Tiger! And, the tiger happens to be my year, which can't hurt considering that the Western calendar's new year has not been off to a great start for me (beginning with my camera being stolen back on New Year's Eve). My Chinese New Year's Eve last night was "quiet" in the sense that I celebrated by just having some friends over for tacos and a Glee marathon (very tradition in the Chinese culture), but also not so quiet in the sense that I have never heard/seen so ... read more

Happy late Thanksgiving and an early Merry Christmas to everyone! I am especially missing you all during these months. Luckily celebrating the holidays here in China has been pretty amusing and distracting. I was able to enjoy two days of Thanksgiving dinner at various friends' houses, complete with real turkey and pumpkin pie! The Chinese word for turkey is "fire chicken," which kind of cracks me up. It was a great week and I am reminded how much I have to be thankful for all year long. Christmas is my most favorite time of the year, and I am surprisingly seeing a lot of lights and decorations everywhere. Also, the Avril Lavigne that is constantly playing at the supermarket (they seriously loop like 5 of her songs all day every day) has been replaced by jingle ... read more

Asia » China » Zhejiang » Putuoshan October 21st 2009

Here in China, all 6 million people get the same week off in October for traveling home to see their families. Great idea...not. It's kind of like the chaos of Christmas travel in the US. Except 6 million times worse. Of course it was my time off too and I wasn't going to sit around Suzhou for a week, so I fought the swarms of people to see which surrounding cities still had bus tickets available. I ended up heading to Ningbo a few hours south, the easiest place from which to get to the famous island of Putuoshan. I was dying for a glimpse of the ocean, and had heard that this island contained some awesome hiking, beautiful Buddhist shrines and great beaches. Two of the three were true; I spent the day wandering around ... read more

Even if you are a meat-atarian, you might want to proceed with caution with the pictures at the bottom. I will try anything once. You have been warned! Aside my traditional Chinese banquet adventure (a special treat from my principal,) I haven't had too much excitement. China continues to be challenging, sometimes I love it and sometimes I hate it. But I did get my work visa, so it looks like I'll be staying. The kids continue being their adorable selves and learning lots everyday. The other teachers are amused by my strange Western habits, like drinking water with lunch (here they say you shouldn't because it will "dilute your stomach acid," but I like to stay hydrated!), and my curly hair (which they don't believe is natural.) I'm happy to have met some wonderful people ... read more

Hi friends - so sorry for the weird font and multiple notifications from the last entry. I'll make sure it doesn't happen again! Well I haven't really done anything too exciting, but I thought it was time for an update. So here is a fun look into a day in the life of Amy in China. Wake up. Immediately prepare for a day of continued battle against the mosquitoes. Care for the many existing bites, which keep popping up despite the unhealthy amount of repellent covering every square inch of my skin and the various contraptions in my room constantly omitting odors that will surely provide my future children with birth defects. "Benben wenzi" is probably the first phrase I learned after I got here (stupid mosquitoes!) Water pressure is a trickle on a good day, ... read more

Mexico after Belize and Guatemala felt like an entirely different world, though not in the way you might expect. It was easier to get around than in Guatemala, and had so much more going on than in laid-back Belize. The three are so diverse it is hard to believe how close they are to each other geographically. Our first stop was a small town in Chiapas called San Cristobal de las Casas. San Cristobal is known as a home to large percent of Mexico's indigenous peoples, as well as a center of Zapatista activism (the city was taken over for a short period in 1994 by the rebel group). After some interesting conversations with our hostel owner Fernando, I highly suspect that he was a Zapatista (he told me he is against all federal government and ... read more

Belize is the most beautiful country I've ever been to. This includes both the scenery and the people. I have never met such friendly locals in my life - and they actually keep talking to you even if you don't buy whatever they are selling! We met so many people on Ambergris Caye, we were beginning to feel like locals ourselves by the time we left. The trip to Belize City from Flores, Guatemala was only a 5 hour ride. As soon as we arrived, a large Belizean man immediately opened the door to our van and bellowed "Welcome to paradise ladies and gentlemen!" This pretty much set the tone for the next few days. We took a ferry straight for San Pedro on Ambergris Caye (Caye just means "island"). I had read that this town ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Guatemala September 27th 2008

Hi everyone, A few weeks ago my friend Jenn and I embarked on a 2 week Central America adventure. We visited Guatemala, Belize, and Mexico, and we had an INCREDIBLE time. Mom suggested using travelblog like I did in Argentina to share our adventures with all of you, so here it goes!! After nearly 24 hours of travel time we arrived in Guatemala City. It's not all that far away, but the cheapest flight included us taking the train to LA, a bus to LAX, and a 5 hour layover in North Carolina. But hey, we saved 100 bucks! After arriving we immediately left the city for Antigua, a small colonial town to the southwest. Antigua is small but beautiful, with cobblestone roads, brightly painted buildings, and dozens of churches. We ended up staying at the ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza December 6th 2007

I finally am back in the USA, but still wanted to share my last few weeks in Argentina with you all. The start of December made me realize the sad truth that I would be going home soon, so I spent much of my last few weeks just exploring Buenos Aires. Most of these pictures are just various locations around the city and me playing tourist after living like a local for 3 months. I actually traveled to Mendoza back in November, which was amazing. Mendoza is the wine capitol of South America, and my friend Sonya and I rented bicycles to go wine tasting. We also went hiking in the Andes, as well as repelling down the side of a cliff (scary but very exhilarating!) In December we also traveled to a city called Rosario. ... read more
