Project Trust is an organisation that specialises in sending school leavers overseas on a gap year to live and work within local communities for 12 months. I was selected a year ago to volunteer in Thailand where I will be teaching conversational english to 11-15 years olds as well as primary schools! I'm keeping this blog to keep everyone updated who helped me reach my target of £5100 on the highs and sometimes lows of my year, aswell as making you all jealous with pictures and stories of the amazing things i'm going to experience! Enjoy!x

8 weeks today until I land back in London. Its crazy. I really don't know where the time has gone. It has been the most amazing year of my life and the best decision I ever made. Whilst there are so many things I have missed, the list of what I will miss when I leave is never ending.... I'll miss the sun, the sweat that comes with it, cycling 2 minutes and being able to buy any flavour fruit smoothie for 30p or being able to choose from a market full of delicious thai food, the debates I have with students over tanned skin being more beautiful than pale skin, the constant smiles you see everyday, the language that once sounded like a babble of gobbledigook that I can now understand the basics of, my ... read more

This was the month that was my favourite out of all of my travelling period. I was lucky enough to spend a month travelling around the amazing Islands and Beaches in the south of Thailand; Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, Koh Phi Phi – Maya Bay, Bamboo Island and Monkey Island, Krabi and Railay. So after Songkran finished in Chiang Mai we had a few days to dry off and wash the lovely cholera water out of our clothes and pack up again ready to head to a hippy little town called Pai, 3 hours north of Chiang Mai. It was so relaxed and it felt like a little town at home, minus the 30 degree heat. We only spent a few days there as even though it had a lot of water falls and temples you ... read more

This is probably the most fun I have ever had. It definitely beats any New Year I have had in the UK, getting all dressed up, paying a ridiculous amount of money on taxis and club entry that any other night would be free and for it generally to be overated. This New Year, however, lasts for 5 days and you are constantly wet! My first experience of this was on Khao San road in Bangkok with my friend and her sister. We were all ready to go out, make up on, DRY clothes the lot. We hadnt even made in on to the street until we were soaked head to toe. I can't even explain the atmosphere, every single person is having an amazing time and even though strangers are squirting you in the face ... read more

So Amy arrived on the 22nd March and after working out my timings perfectly to that I would be able to see her plane land as I was on the sky train on the way to the airport, I got a text when my journey still had 45 minutes left saying that she had landed an hour early! So I was running through the airport hoping that she was still going through security when I am frantically looking at the arrivals board and I heard “Amy” “AMY!” and it was totes emosh!!!!! It felt like it was the only the day before that we had said bye, because it was just back to how it used to be. We had 2 nights out in Bangkok before we were getting the night bus to Koh Samui. On ... read more

Don’t go if you want to “find yourself” but do go if you want to go on a diet that you HAVE to stick to. We were all set, ready to go with our lovely white clothes which included 2 oversized white blouses, 2 ridiculously long skirts (which I almost stood on and pulled down multiple times whilst in the temple), a white scarf and a very, very sexy white underskirt! The temple was beautiful, more like a resort. They gain their money through donations from people who go there to meditate, as it is free to stay there for as long as you would like and anyone is welcome. Before we went to the temple we would be staying at, we visited one not far away where a foreign monk resided. His parents were from ... read more

Friday 25thJanuary was Sports Day but I’m pretty sure I can think of a few more names for it. Whilst in England sports day was just seen by most as a day to finish early and for a certain group of girls, the chance to wear the tiniest hot pants ever along with showing off their beautifully applied streaky fake tan. However, the girls here (and boys but it’s hard to tell them apart!) take it to a whole new level. In this school there are 4 colours and each student has a colour, pretty much like our house systems. Each colour has a cheerleading team with around 15 cheerleaders. Their costumes were amazing, glitter, lace, metallic fabric, plastic…just anything you can think of….and that was only the first outfit change out of about 5! Then ... read more

This is going to be an extremely short post but I just felt the need to write it down or tell someone.... A few weeks ago I sent a boy out of my class because he was being disruptive, pushing people off chairs, shouting in class, punching people; just being a 13 year old boy who hated school. I told him to stand up, go and put his shoes on (all Thai students leave their shoes outside) and then walked him to the head of English. I must admit, seeing his face when he didnt realise what he was doing wrong and the embarrassment of being sent out did make me feel a bit bad. But only a bit. He was being uncontrollable. He spent the rest of that lesson meditating with the head of english ... read more

6.55am....AMY WAKE UP ITS LIKE 7!!!!!!!! The bus was booked for 7am and we had just under 5 minutes to get ready and pack the last of our things. BUT Thailand being as laid back as it is and us being the first pick up, we made it! Although I did feel very sick after being rushed so much and not having time to brush my teeth until the first toilet break....ew. So after a 30 minute ferry journey, an hour in the immigration office to try and get a re-entry permit at 1000 baht and then a 5 hour journey we arrived at the lovely place that is the Cambodian border.....NOT. Grabbing at our bags and trying to take our passports off us to get more money we were completely overwhelmed and having massive Koh ... read more

Happy New Year!!! I know its been agesss since my last post but I have so much to write about and I will try tell you all about it, although I am sat here doing this whilst watching the new Micheal McIntyre dvd so there may be a few mistakes where I was busy wetting myself - Thanks Robyn's Mama! So. Friday afternoon we set off to Bangkok, rucksacks jam packed with bikinis and suncream ready for a well deserved break - honest! We met up with some of the other volunteers and spent the night in our trusty usual hostel, they know us by name now. Saturday morning we then went to the airport to collect the new member to the group; Charlie. He is going to be joining Alex up in the mountains and ... read more
