Oceania March 22nd 2010

We just stayed in Napier for one night, which was enough time to admire the Art-Deco it is famous for. We went on the Lonely Planet's 'Art-Deco guided walk' and relaxed in the pretty gardens and parks! After a 5 hour bus journey we were in New Zealand's capital city, Wellington. Here we've embraced the Lord of the Rings phenomenon, climbing Mount Victoria. This was the site of the infamous 'GET OFF THE ROAD' scene, as well as most of the beginning of the first film where the hobbits are running from the Black Riders. We decided not to go for the tour as you paid to see the same locations, but finding a LOTR locations book afterwards, we discovered we were in all the right places! The films were actually shot pretty much everywhere in ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo March 22nd 2010

We arrived in Taupo with Amy having a skydive booked. Aaaah! We didn't think it was going to go ahead, however, as it was very cloudy, and apparently it has to be really clear with perfect weather to be able to do it. Fortunately it had cleared by mid-afternoon and the bus came to pick us both up. We were briefed on the different heights of jump (Amy opted for the 'smaller' 12000ft) and the various photo ops. In the end we decided to get photos and a dvd, meaning another man with a camera on his head would have to skydive at the same time. After meeting the tandem master (the guy I would be strapped to) and getting changed, I got on the plane. A very small plane where I was sitting on the ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland March 21st 2010

We arrived in Auckland, New Zealand after declaring a straw hat at customs and were met by Becci (Amy's friend from home) who drove us all the way from the airport to our hostel in the city and bought us coffee at starbucks! The following days were spent exploring the city and getting used to the slightly cheaper (albeit not by much) produce. From there we went to Rotorua (just past Hobbiton!) It was very quiet, sunny and laid back. Despite the fact it was a Sunday it was really noticeable how much more clean, calm and safe New Zealand is compared to home. Possibly due to the fact there are only 5 million people here and they aren't letting a whole lot more in! I would guess that tourists come close to outnumbering the population! ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney March 13th 2010

We really liked Sydney and stayed 4 nights here as our final destination in Australia. In fact Amy liked it so much she rated it as her favourite place on the whole trip so far - so it was good timing that she had her 23rd birthday there. We stayed in 'Kings Cross', slightly to the east of the city, and supposedly the red light district of Sydney. But we only saw two or three 'suspicious characters' and on the whole it was a good location with a cheap hostel which gave us loads of free stuff - such as sweetie vouchers and free calls to the UK! On Amy's birthday we covered the main tourist things to see during the day, such as the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. It was quite surreal ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Byron Bay March 12th 2010

Over the short journey to Byron Bay we changed states from Queensland to New South Wales, and went forward an hour as the south of Australia uses daylight saving in their summer. We stayed 3 nights in Byron Bay and really liked it, possibly our favourite place in Australia. As well as having a massive sandy beach with brilliant surf, the town itself was really pretty with lots of little boutique shops and small cafes and bars. We spent one whole day on the beach in the hot hot sun and Ryan went surfing, while Amy gave it a brief try! In the evening we went to a poker tournament and met some local Aussies who all seemed very pleasant. The next day we went on a longer than expected walk (about 4 hours in the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Brisbane March 3rd 2010

We moved onto Queensland's biggest city Brisbane. It rained a lot of the time we were here so we limited our time outside! We stayed in an area called the 'west end' which was slightly hippy in nature with lots of outdoor cafes / bars etc. Brisbane itself was a nice place, but a typical city and most travellers seems to just stay a couple of days before moving on. We walked along the river a bit, checked out the shops and otherwise just relaxed in the hostel. After two nights in Brisbane it was still raining when we got to Surfers Paradise. And yes it is called that, bizarrely! The coastline seemed slightly American, with big high-rise buildings alongside the sandy beach, which was like nothing else we'd seen in Australia - usually the beaches ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach March 3rd 2010

We moved onto Airlie Beach and stayed in what was almost like a resort, with the rooms in cabins in a forest and a bar and shops etc at the front. It was good apart from the outdoor showers - someone left the light on in them so you can guess the size of the insect population in the morning!! It was a really nice place, quite small, but really sunny with lots of little shops and places to swim. We managed to bag a free drink each but decided to stop with the alcohol when we learnt a pint would be $11 (almost seven pounds!!!) The next day Ryan went to the Whitsunday Islands (Amy deciding she wasn't bothered enough about it to pay the price they were asking!!) where he snorkelled on the Great ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Mission Beach March 1st 2010

After 2/3 hours on the bus, we arrived at Mission Beach in boiling hot sunshine. It had rained on and off while we had been in Cairns (as it is the tropical wet season at the moment in the north of australia) but as nice as it was to be dry, the humidity was just as intense as Asia, with it being so close to the equator still. Our hostel was about 30 metres from the beach and luckily had air-conditioning. We spent the first day just walking and relaxing on the beach and were astounded how empty it was - we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves. Mission Beach itself was really small, literally just a village by the beach. This was nice as we felt like we were experiencing rural australia a ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns City March 1st 2010

Hello! After a tiring overnight flight (which consisted of two flights, one from Singapore to Darwin and then a 3 hour break in the airport lounge in the early hours of the morning before the second to Cairns!) we arrived in Australia! It was a comforting feeling to be back in a 'Western' culture and once we got over the tiredness we enjoyed wandering around the town for a few days. It was quite a lot smaller than we expected which meant everything was in close walking distance. Although there was no beach at the city, there was an impressive mountain-like rainforest backdrop. We stayed in our first proper hostel (sticking mainly to hotels and guesthouses in asia) which had a kitchen meaning we could finally make our own food and not be forced to eat ... read more

Asia » Singapore February 27th 2010

Hey all, So from Phuket we flew to Singapore; deciding that we didn't really have the time to go through Malaysia and that we weren't that bothered about it anyway! We stayed just outside the main city in an area that reminded us both a bit of China. Singapore was a little like Hong Kong. It was certainly more expensive than any other part of Asia! So much more developed though. Their 'underground' system was very clean and easy to use, much more than at home! And everything was in English, there were hardly even any translations. While there we visited Little India and Chinatown. They are both areas in Singapore which are literally like being in either India or China. In Little India for example, they have Indian products and magazines and shops and everything. ... read more
