Once more the travel Gods have smiled upon me and granted me an extended leave from work. Just 4 short weeks this time, long enough hopefully to stop and draw breath, try and recapture my appreciation of life. Have been looking forward to this trip pretty much since I returned from my last one but don’t think I’ve ever been this disorganised. Hope it’s not an omen of things to come…. Eeek! 1st off I booked myself a barganeous flight from Edinburgh to KL, leaving Feb 12th and returning Feb 13th (thought I was booking March 13th obviously) giving me a long and luxurious 4 hours on holiday – probably not even enough time to make my way through customs and book in for the flight home. Of course it was non refundable, (with my luck ... read more

Back home, Christmas has been and gone and tomorrow I must return to work. Work and resposibilities, such is the life! Anyway the following is a list if items I packed for my trip, and how useful they ended up being. Hopefully someone will find the information interesting, if not then it will help jog my memory when next I venture there. CLOTHING *Trousers x 4 : Too many, I ended up posting one pair back home. Next time I'll take two pairs for day wear and one slightly smarter pair for dressing up. *T-Shirts (short sleeve) x 3 : 2 would have been fine *T-Shirts (long sleeve) x 2 : 1 pair would be fine, I posted 1 of mine home half way through *Shirt (long sleeve) x 1 : would have been very useful ... read more

Gosh, who'd have thought three months would go by so fast? Also, who'd have thought I could accumulate so much stuff in such a short space of time? Honestly, even with posting things home along the way I find I have had to purchase a rollie suitcase thing in order to transport all my gumpf home. Ack! A backpacker with a rollie suitcase, what is the world comming to? Anyway, my last two days have been spent in Kuala Lumpur, a city I was not expecting to like (on the advice of fellow travellers met along the way) but it's actually alright here. Big bonus is that the city centre in quite compact so you can traverse it easily enough by foot, the traffic is a bit hairy (3 months and I still haven't mastered the ... read more

Why, oh why did I come to Singapore? This is the question I kept asking myself as I traversed shopping mall after shopping mall (the Singaporeans could teach the world a thing or two about shopping malls I can tell you). Why was I even in shopping malls when I have no money? Well, I'll get to that. Question one, why was I here? Essentially, I came because I was in the area and it seemed a shame to miss it. Everyone I've met on my travels has insisted I must visit Singapore before flying home (ok, so everyone I met who hailed from Singapore insisted this, same-same) and so Singapore here I am. Question two, why the shopping malls? Firstly, it was raining, and not the sort of rain that's conducive to ambling round botanic ... read more

Asia December 17th 2009

It would seem I am to end this trip the same way I began it. Wet! No sooner had I arrived in Melaka than the heavens opened wide and spewed forth a deluge of water. In 10 seconds I was soaked through, no pathetic drizzling out here, when it rains, it rains! In between storms there are periods of blazing sunshine, but it so muggy here that I just never quite manage to dry out completely. Melaka certainly offers plenty to do, it's a very pretty town chock full of grand buildings and charming shop houses. For some reason there are also an inordinate amount of museums here, I kid you not, from Nonya history, to torture through the ages, to stamps. Something for everyone as they say (although who wants to pay to see a ... read more

The boat that whisked me away from Koh Lipe was not, as I'd imagined, a large lumbering (but oh so stable) ferry, but rather a very small and very fast speed boat. Initially I was quite content to clamber aboard, thinking that this boat was merely going to ferry us out to a much larger one. However, I realised my error as soon as the captain let out the throttle and the boat took flight (honestly, that baby left the water almost completely, am not sure I could claim to have sailed to Malaysia so much as flew there). Each time we hit a wave (and we hit a great many waves) the boat would fly up out of the water leaving only the propellers submerged (and them only barley) returning to the water in a ... read more

The last few weeks having been particularly difficult it felt good to back with the plan and winging my way in a comfortable train to Koh Adang, remote and beautiful island in the Turatao national park. Alas, I should have known this contentment could not last. Alighting from the long tail I was a little perturbed to clock the vast array of people frolicking upon my deserted beach. This was most certainly not part of the plan. Neither was the discovery that the island was fully booked (thanks to the national holiday to celebrate the King's birthday - DOH!), salvation did lay to hand however. The park authorities were quite prepared to lend lend me a tent (for a ridiculously small fee) so I could camp on the island. However, if one look at the hoards ... read more

Aaaaaaargh! Can I swear? Please? No? Well alright, but I very, very much want to right now. Have been sitting here trying to catch up with this blog (how on earth did I get so far behind?) and the blasted computer has just gone and erased my one remaining memory card. I'll say it again - Aaaargh! Now I have no photo's at all from the last 3 months, not a single blimmin one! Of course, there's a lesson in there somewhere but am darned if I'm in the mood to learn it right now. Hindsight is not a wonderful thing, it's a snide and smug little devil and I'm chosing to ignore it until I'm less cross. Anyway, small rant over I shall try to continue the blog in a reasonable fashion. So, having departed ... read more

Alrighty, upon my return to Thailand I had one more day in Bangkok, primarily to allow me to post home all the outsize and unwieldy souvenirs I had purchased in Myanmar. This done in remarkably good time I headed out to indulge in more of the fantastic street food which is on offer everywhere. Tummy bulging, but unable to resist buying everything I saw, I took refuge in a nearby massage parlour (with no food in view). This one had a slight twist though, the massage was performed by fish! Having cleaned my feet I tentatively placed them into the water. This took nerves of steel let me tell you, the massage almost began before my feet even hit the water as the fish were practically jumping out of the water to get at them. It ... read more

Tis a simple enough rule, one developed very early on during my foray into Myanmar cuisine for ordering the chicken rarely resulted in chicken as I am accustomed to it, but rather a small side dish of chicken bones would arrive to accompany my rice. These bones were mostly devoid of flesh and a person would have to pick one up and gnaw it like a rat to get anywhere with it. Having a profound dislike for gnawing bones in public I subsequently eschewed the chicken dishes throughout my stay. Having done so well with my avoidance of the feathered bird I confess I'm at a loss to explain why, when arriving in Mawlamyine ravenous with hunger (9 hours on a train far too bouncy to eat or drink on) I entered the first restaurant I ... read more
