So, we are back in the United States… and not a second too soon. We had such a wonderful trip, but there is something about home that you just can’t beat. Maybe the key to that equation is the ability to communicate with other humans. The language barrier really does start to affect your perception of an experience after a while. At first its great, but after a while it really gets old. Like when you order at a restaurant, you basically are spinning the wheel on what you will actually get. It’s funny - but it gets old. So while still in Turkey, I had been telling Tucker all along that it is not a great idea to eat what we call “street meat.” It is basically gyro-type sandwiches that you can buy for the ... read more

So, in Istanbul, there are millions of cats - everywhere… fat cats, skinny cats, old cats, a billion kittens, and a billion pregnant cats. It is really strange. They are like the dogs in Mexico - stray and all over the place. And of course with my obsession with animals, I really can’t walk past them without petting them and giving them love - everyone yells at me - that I am going to get ringworm or some other weird diseases from these damn cats, but I don’t care. The other night at dinner, there was a cute little orange cat, who looked like a baby herself, pregnant as can be. We have been in Istanbul for almost 2 weeks now. I have to say - I love the city more and more every day. We have class everyday from 8:30 - 12:45, with both Turkish and American students. There are students from several American law schools including KU, South Texas, New York Law School, and Temple. The Turkish students are really fun and open. We have gone out with them several times - they are completely willing to be our gracious tour guides, and most of them speak very good English. One of the Turkish girls named Merve had us over for a party last week. They are just really open and helpful and fun. Actually, one of the students in the program from NY is half Turkish and fluent in the language. His name is ... read more

Tucker and I left for Turkey on Tuesday, June 28, flying through London, with a short overnight stay at a hostel by the airport in London. When we arrived in London, it was about midnight, which is in the afternoon in KS, so we were exhausted from the flight but not exactly tired enough to sleep, or I wasn’t anyway. After waiting about an hour to get a cab (which ended up costing about $40 US for about 5 miles), we arrived at the hostel, which was clean but very basic… Perfect for our purposes I suppose. The woman at the front desk literally had one tooth, and even it wasn’t looking so hot. I couldn’t sleep at all, partly because it was not night time in the states but mostly because I was so anxious ... read more
