We're Grandparents

Some of you already have received this message. Neil and Suzanne had a baby girl at 733 AM on April 19. The due date was April 29 so she came about a week early. Sophia Rose entered the world at 7 11 oz. and 19 12 inches. What a beauty We spent the night at the hospital. Suzanne's labor progressed quite quickly for a first baby but baby just wouldn't drop into position so after 3 hours o

Last Entry on New Zealand

Barbara Has returned home. Weather and flood derailed the week RVing in Australia. David is doing train travel across Australia now. Decided to give you a final message and pictures on our time in New Zealand. After leaving the thermal pools in the Waikite Valley we headed north past Auckland. Rained most of the day but turned nice as we approached Whangarei on the northeast coast of the Nort

More Weather and BugsThe ferry trip from the South Island to the North Island was a relatively smooth ride considering the winds in Wellington when we arrived. Not surprised at the wind since Wellington is known for its wind and it was windy when we were there the first time. Sprent the night in Wellington and several times during the night felt the RV shake because of the wind. Got up early the

Traveling from Westport to Picton

After leaving the glacier we headed north along the west coast of the South Island stopping at Greymouth and then Westport. Our overnight at Greymouth was right on the beach beautiful sunset to enjoy. At Westport we took a short hike to a fur seal colony on rocky outcroppings. Babies born in November so got to see some young seals as well as adults. Ate lunch at a wonderful seaside cafe and t

Traveling the South Island

Before giving an update of our travels on the South Island I want to share some information on traveling in NZ in general. As I'm sure you already know it is a rugged and sparsely populated country. Our plan was to spend most of our time on the South Island least populated but that plan has changed somwhat. Because of the topography and population roads are limited. On the South Island t

Barbara's Birthday on the Beach

Montana girls with January birthdays usually celebrate their birthdays with snowstorms or blizzards. This year I got to celebrate mine at the beach. After leaving Auckland we headed southwest to Waitomo Caves. The next day we drove to a small coastal town Kawhui. We had to cross a small mountain range so drove 20 miles on a narrow and very windy 2 lane road. Drove through a lot of forest as we

We Are In New Zealand

We had an uneventful trip to San Francisco where we met our grandniece Paige. After 3 movies several cat naps and 13 hours we landed in Auckland NZ. We flew on Air New Zealand which has very nice service and excellent food. Reminded me of the service we had on Air France when we went to Italy in 2001. We let San Francisco at 745 PM on Dec. 31 they served champagne to everyone when the plan

We are getting ready to head to New Zealand and Australia. We leave on December 31 so will start the new year in a new country. We will be traveling by RV as we do in Europe. Should be fun or scary driving on the wrong side of the road. Our grandniece Paige will be traveling with us which will be fun. We will spend most of January in New Zealand and then move on to Australia for about 10

We are now home. Planned to do a posting when we got to London but the hotel we were in charged 15 pounds per day for internet which we didn't pay. Most of our other stops were free or charged from 36 euro per day so this was a shock. We completed our canal experience on July 15. Overall it was a great experience. Beautiful countryside and fascinating to work the locks. Have lots to share wit

We have had our canal boat for 5 days now and it has been an amazing experience. Very relaxing. We are on the Llangollen Canal which starts in England just south of Chester which is just south of Liverpool. We started around midpoint on the canal going northwest into Wales to the canals starting point at Llangollen. The countryside is beautiful moving from rolling pasture to hilly wooded count

Surprising Liverpool

Liverpool has been a lovely surprise. If asked about Liverpool before starting our trip I would have described it as an old industrial shipping city and home of the Beatles. Wouldn't have planned to spend much time here. Because it is close to where we get our canal boat it was a good stopover place so added it to our schedule. As I started reading about it in Lonely Planet England it sound

We spent a day in Hoek van Holland returning the van and organizing all our luggage. We have way more than we need. Brought several things like bedding for the RV and bicycle helmets that we haven't needed and have bought some things along the way plus have a few nonperishable food items we are taking with us to the canal boat. It is a good thing we didn't bring the bikes to England with us.

We returned Amsterdam to do a final museum swing through the city before turning in the van and heading to the UK. When we left Assen we headed to Hoenderloo near Appledoorn. There is a national park De Hoge Veluwe near there that we wanted to visit. This was originally a country estate owned by Anton and Helene KrollerMuller. They purchased the land in the early 1900's and from the beginnin

Our last day in Denmark was the best day ever in terms of weather. Bright blue skies and temps in low 70's. Drove north of Copenhagen about 10 miles to Rungsted a small town on the coast to the homemuseum of Karen Blixen. Her life in Africa is portrayed in the movie Out of Africa. This is the house she grew up in and returned to after her time in Africa. Interesting information on her lif

Across Denmark to Copenhagen

I'll start with a weather update. On the plus side the rain has stopped. On the downside when the skies cleared the temperature dropped and the winds appeared. We had 2 days of temps in the high 50's and very high winds so it was back to the layered clothes limited biking and more indoor activities. Drove east from Ribe in Jutland to the first big island Funen. Stayed overnight in Odense t

We are now in Denmark. We drove from Bremen Germany to Ribe Denmark rain all the way until about an hour out of Ribe. Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark founded in the 800's on the western coast of Denmark. Population now is about 8000 and it is preserved as a historic site. They have several historic sites here and this year are celebrating their 1300th birthday. Cloudy but no rain immin

Rainy in Brugge

I'll start with a general update. The weather has warmed such that we don't need the heater on at night. David hasn't worn his long johns for about 5 days and I am now wearing shorts and a tshirt without a tank top underneath for warmth. In terms of rain it is supposed to rain on and off most of this week so we are planning as we go and the clouds move. Don't think I have told you before but

We have continued in Delft over the weekend which turned rainy on Sunday afternoon so will take a few minutes to write while sitting in the RV with the door open to enjoy the fresh air and watch it rain. Friday was our longest biking day so far about 2530 miles. The route was 24 miles but we took several wrong turns and had to backtrack so added extra miles. One nice thing about the NL becaus

Sunday May 30 it rained on and off all day so spent the day in the RV playing cards reading and napping. Looked to be clearing the next morning so left Alkmaar and headed north to the tip of the NL peninsula and Den Helder. It seems like we have traveled a fair distance since we star

We are in the town of Alkmaar population about 9000 northwest of Amsterdam and one of the cheese capitals of the NL. We have had 3 beautiful days. Walked into the old city the first 2 days here. Much to see. Thursay afternnon we just wandered through the central city looking at the shops and food markets. Amazing cheese shop.
