Alexanders - Kristin Jerger

Kristin Jerger Welcome, family and friends, to Costa Rica through the eyes of the Alexanders! We are seeking to use this space to keep in touch with you, keep some records, inform, and hopefully entertain a little. You can ask questions about anything we write about, so we hope you will travel with us, in a 21st century-cyberspace-kinda-way! Ready or not, here we go....

So after traveling around as much of the country as we could stand for a month (mid-November to mid-December) while toting our two high-maintenance pieces of luggage, we settled back in Heredia. We chose Heredia primarily for the cooler temperatures (about 70 degrees in the morning and almost always sunny, rising in the afternoon to the mid-80’s , then cooling again with the afternoon rain) and the proximity to San Jose, schools, and other services. Our first weeks back in Heredia were surreal. While looking for a home to rent, we stayed in a little apartment with an open-air kitchen [View Full Entry]

hola from ojochal!
hola from ojochal!
ojochal really is a tropical paradise, but we found out paradise wasn't what we were looking for.
so we headed out to the pacific coast into the deepest jungle we could get to without a helicopter. well, that's not exactly true, but we did put our almost-new rental through hell! it held up in the mountains (i think more than 8000ft) and the hot jungle mud slides (unpaved roads with dips 3 feet deep and boulders every few feet) and on the road from dominical to quepos which was described to us as "passable." have you been on it? i wouldn't call it a road so much as a slippery, muddy, path in parts. but we got through [View Full Entry]

Peaceful courtyard at hotel
Peaceful courtyard at hotel
Our hotel has been perfect for us, with a kitchen, his and hers bathrooms (?) and a little courtyard with lime-like fruits and gorgeous yellow and red flowers all around.
Yep, we're here. It's been just over a week and we are still pinching ourselves -- and just figuring out where we are. Streets are generally not named here, or if they have a name, no one uses them, so much of our attention has gone to learning how to get around in the neighborhood of our hotel -- find groceries, a playground for the guys, some twine, miscellaneous stuff like that. The hotel is at the top of a hill from which there are spectacular views of green, lush mountains, usually with clouds over their peaks like pillows sitting on [View Full Entry]

Waiting
Waiting
Do they sense the storm approaching?
Just getting all the papers and whatnot in order now. Any travel suggestions from people who have flown recently to avoid security snags? Don't know how the no-liquid thing is going to work out since the guys have to drink so frequently. We'll have to play it by ear. Now we are just anticipating missing you. A kind of virtual missing. Maybe worse than the real thing. At least we hope so. M&M are completely oblivious to the storm that is about to become their lives, of course. Our next entry will be from Costa Rica.
